    Opis:
    Lithostratigraphic division of the Upper Silesian Keuper continental succession belongs to abandoned matters, even if newly-discovered sites with unique vertebrate faunas highlight an increasing request to more precise designation of their stratigraphic setting. As a result of multidisciplinary grant and with a guide use of new borehole sections, a major lithostratigraphic unit is formally proposed for the middle Keuper (i.e., above the Schilfsandstein; Stuttgart Formation in Stratigraphische Tabelle von Deutschland, 2002), based on previously inaccurately used unit, Grabowa Formation of Bilan (1976). The re-defined Formation of Variegated Mudstones and Carbonates from Grabowa includes Upper Gypsum Beds and Steinmergelkeuper in traditional scheme from Germany (=Weser and Arnstadt Formations), and generally correlates with the Norian stage. Two bone-bearing horizons (Krasiejów and Lisowice) are placed within the unit, which is completely subdivided in three members: Ozimek (mudstone-evaporate), Patoka (marly mudstone-sandstone) and WoŸniki (limestone).

    Opis:
    Air conditions in post-mining areas are threatened by thermal activity of old spoil tips of coal mines. Reclamation operations cause only time-limited suppression of the oxidation process of carbon particles in the spoil heap. There are different reasons for that process. One of them is the incorrectly recognized geometry of the combustion spots in the spoil tip mass and the ways in which they are powered by oxygen from the atmosphere. The 1D inversion of vertical resistivity sounding data (VES) allows visualizing the down-going thermal effects and concluding about transport of atmospheric air (oxygen) and combustion gases in the whole mass. The resistivity distribution within waste can effectively support interpretation of geochemical and geothermic observations made on the spoil tip. The article describes the results of resistivity measurements made on an old spoil tip with waste from coal production in a heavy urbanized area of Chorzów City. Currently, the area of the former spoil heap is used for recreation and sports purposes (a park).

    The utility of remote sensing data for unraveling the structural pattern of the Palaeozoic and Meso-Cenozoic formations in Upper Silesia and western Ma3opolska was evaluated. A comprehensive analysis of lineaments interpreted on satellite images, morphological lineaments and linear geophysical anomalies indicates significant mutual relationships with the structural elements shown in geological maps. The spatial distribution of debated lineaments demonstrates two distinctive maxima representing NW-SE and ENE-WSW-oriented structures. The former population of lineaments corresponds to the main structural trend in the study area. The latter system has less evident geological representation although it roughly parallels the strike of the Carpathian thrust front.

    The major goal of the project “The evolution of terrestrial environments of the Upper Silesian Keuper as biotopes of vertebrates”, granted for Grzegorz Racki by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (2009-2013), was an exhaustive, integrated study of the bone-enriched middle Keuper interval in terms of stratigraphy, sedimentology, mineralogy and geochemistry. The new website “Bone-bearing Keuper of the Upper Silesia, southern Poland” (http://www.ing.pan.pl/Keuper/Bone-bearing_Keuper-1.htm)presents in English the results of this project. The significant achievements are only a starting point to a comprehensive presentation of the complex Keuper themes, jointly with an extensive repository of regional literature (above 420 full-texted publications since 1790). In addition, the main results of the grant, as well as diversity of their implications for future studies are summarized herein, with emphasis on controversial geochronological aspects in vertebrate paleontology (how many bone-rich levels?), and in a broad historical context.

    It is commonly known that in the Upper Silesia the coal deposits exist. However, in that region also other mineral deposits such as therapeutic water are exploited. Such situation while two different deposits are exploited might lead to some problems. The Goczałkowice-Zdrój spa is the one amongst two spas in the Upper Silesia. There are three boreholes which exploits therapeutic water in Goczałkowice-Zdrój. The brine, which is exploited there, contains high concentration of iodine and ferrous ions. However the mineralization of water has decreased since the boreholes were drilled. The hydrogeological system of mineral water is very vulnerable for any changes. That is the reason why it should be well protected, especially while exploited water is used for therapeutic aims.

    Current territory of Poland was an exploration area for paleontologists from other European countries throughout the almost entire nineteenth century. A considerable part of findings were stored in institutions located beyond current borders of Poland. We have examined, documented and identified above 350 fossils housed in the Natural History Museum in Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien). The collection includes paleobotanical and paleozoological specimens from the Little Poland and the Upper Silesia. Some of these specimens are a unique material from the localities which are no longer available.

    Seven prospective areas have been delineated for gold deposits of vein and metasomatic types in the Sudetes (Kłodzko–Złoty Stok, Southern Kaczawa Mountains and Rudawy Janowickie prospective areas), on the Fore-Sudetic Block (Wądroże Wielkie) and in the contact zone of the Małopolska Block with the Upper Silesia Block (Dolina Będkowska, Pilica and Mysłów prospective areas). In total they are covering ca. 285.5 km2, (ca.252 km2 in the Sudetes and ca. 22 km2 on the Fore-Sudetic Block). The prospective areas were recognized on the basis of current regulations, which defined marginal parameters of specific deposit and delineated its borders together with application of adequate quantitative Au deposit models supported by ore parameters from the old mining records. Total predicted/estimated gold resources (prognostic + prospective resources),which are depending on the applied parameters, are from ca. 9.4 Mg (for n = 16 ore bodies) to 21.5 Mg (for n = 64 o.b.). The auriferous ores of the vein and metasomatic types (blind bodies) are associated with the metamorphosed volcanic-sedimentary Paleozoic formation in Lower Silesia and with contact-metasomatic zones around Variscan granitoid intrusions in southern Poland. The greatest estimated Au resources were recognized in the following areas: K³odzko–Z³oty Stok – ca. 6.3 Mg Au (for n = 7 o.b. – skarns, veins and beresites), Southern Kaczawa Mountains – ca. 4.8 Mg Au (for n = 15 o.b.) and Rudawy Janowickie – ca. 4.5 Mg Au (for n = 20 o.b. of vein and/or skarn types). In the contact zone of the Małopolska Block with the Upper Silesia Block the prospective areas are associated with the marginal zones (epithermal Au veins) around the granitoid/porphyry-related mineralization of the Mo-Cu-W type. The limited ore prospecting causes difficulties in estimation of Au resources in that area. The available data has allowed for a rough estimation of Au resources from ca. 1 to 3.5 Mg (for n = 5–21 o.b.). In most of the recognized Au prospective areas, auriferous mineralization is in paragenetic association with refractory gold sulfides and only sporadically appears as native gold or electrum mineralization (mainly in quartz veins). A new stage of gold prospection is highly recommended especially within the abandoned gold mining areas in the Sudetes. An application of modern geophysics (VLF and IP) followed by shallow drillings should bring new discoveries of gold deposits. In the report, environmental and spatial conflicts have also been pointed out within the specific gold prospective areas in relation to the presence of National Parks, NATURE 2000 areas, underground water reservoirs, etc.
