Aquatic ecosystems, including river sediments, are particularly vulnerable to contamination with mercury compounds. One of the most visible effects of increased mercury pollution are changes in the concentration of this element in the bottom sediments of rivers that collect surface water from industrial areas, where numerous sources of mercury emissions are found. The aim of the study conducted in 2014, was to assess mercury contamination of the bottom sediments in the Rudawa and Pr¹dnik rivers in areas with different land use: urban-industrial and agricultural, and thus to recognize the possibility of a potential threat to the environment including the groundwater. For the purpose of comparison, results of research conducted by the authors for the Chech³o river bottom sediments in 2007 were used. Mercury contamination of bottom sediments of the Rudawa, Pr¹dnik rivers and the previously studied Chech³o river is characterized by considerable diversity and variability from the spring to their mouth. The highest mercury contamination was found in the sediments of the Chech³o river, especially in the mining area. Average mercury content in the sediments of the Chech³o river is 0.380 mg/kg. The studies have shown the lowest mercury content in the Rudawa river sediments, where the mean values are between 0.066 mg/kg and 0.071 mg/kg, depending on the depth of sampling. The mean levels of mercury in the sediments of the Pr¹dnik river are higher at between 0.203 and 0.246 mg/kg. Mercury contamination in the river Pr¹dnik’s sediments increases in the lower course, particularly in the vicinity of Krakow metropolitan area. No observed a clear correlation between total mercury content in the test samples and the share of silt and clay fractions in the bottom sediments.

Based on geological and paleobotanic data, the oldest valley system of the Niemen River is linked in the study area with a river located southward of Grodno, within a parallel valley from the Alexandrian (Mazovian) Interglacial. The foundations of the present-day, almost meridian course of the Niemen River valley, are connected with a system of post-glacial lakes from the Sozhian (Wartanian) Stadial of the Pripethian (Odranian) Glaciation, later filled with organic deposits of the Muravian (Eemian) Interglacial. Analysis of six sites with these deposits (Pyszki, Rumlówka, Poniemuń, Żukiewicze, Bohatyrowicze and Kniażewodce) indicates that they represent three lakes located at different altitudes. During the maximal range of the Dvinian (Main) Stadial of the Poozerian (Vistulian) Glaciation, the lakes were beyond the range of the ice-sheet. At this time, the highest located deposits of the Poniemuń-Żukiewicze lake were covered by sander sediments, whereas the Bohatyrowicze-Kniażewodce and Pyszki-Rumlówka lakes that were located at lower levels, were covered by fluvio-periglacial deposits and varved clays of the Skidel ice-dammed lake. Retreat of the ice-sheet of the Dvinian Stadial, resulting in outflow of water from the Skidel ice-dammed lake through the area with the two lower interglacial lakes, triggered the formation of a system of the Niemen River supra-flood terraces above them. Accumulation of the highest of these terraces (VI), during the first phase of the Skidel lake outflow, marks the beginning of the present-day Niemen River valley formation that probably began in the younger phases of the Dvinian ice-sheet retreat. Further evolution of the valley is linked with the Late Glacial formation of the middle (III-V) supra-flood terraces and with the Holocene formation of the lower (II, I) supra-flood terraces.

An issue of mean residence time (MRT) evaluation, i.e. the period of time from rainfall until drainage of groundwater by rivers (Danube River Basin, Vistula River Basin and Narew River Basin), is discussed Asimple method of evaluating the groundwater MRT for the Danube River Basin based on tritium data is introduced. It has been confirmed that the historical tritium level in the rivers, being higher than in precipitation, has its end and is reversed, opening a new pathway in understanding the surface-groundwater interaction and specifically in evaluating MRT of groundwater. The authors have defined a separate notification for mean residence time of the whole water in the basin (τ) and mean residence time for groundwater in the basin (τwp). Based on the tritium study the obtained τ values are 6.5 and 5.7 years for the Vistula River Basin (VRB) and the Narew River Basin (NRB), respectively. In turn, the obtained τwp values are 8.0 and 6.0 years, respectively. NRB is a lowland plain and a morphologically, geologically and hydrogeologically uniform basin. The obtained τ wp of groundwater is thus representative for the whole basin. Instead inmorphologically non uniform VRB basin groundwater τwp is a generalized value,i.e.averaged over contributed parts of the basin.

New research in the N part of the Bardo Gorge [close to the Sudetic Marginal Fault] evidenced the occurrence of two hitherto unknown Pleistocene river terraces. The terraces were interpreted basing on digital elevation model [DEM] 1;10,000 and radars sweeping of the Earth’s surfaces [DETM level 2]. Moreover, the results of petrographical analysis of deposits exposed in the 22 high river terrace show two-tier structure of the terrace. This suggest a polygenetic age of the terrace. Within the last terrace fractured clasts and small-scale faults were observed. Fractured clasts were studied in the bottom part of the 22-m-high river terrace where numerous fractured clasts occur. This part of the terrace is composed of gravels containing clasts up to 80 cm across. The matrix is sandy-clayey. The fractures are usually restricted to particular clasts. The fractures compose two sets striking NW-SE and N-S. Gravels exposed in the uppermost part of the terrace are cut by few strike-slip, N-S striking, sub-vertical faults which can be traced along a vertical distance up to 50 cm. These faults cut the gravel matrix but omit clasts. Fractures cutting the clasts do show a well organized architecture which is independent of orientation of a-b surfaces of the host clasts. These features indicate that the fractures were formed in situ within the studied gravels. Furthermore, for the majority of fractures, the angle between the fracture and the a-b surface of the host clast is less than 80, confirming the in situ origin of fractures. The fractures of one set are parallel to the strike of the Sudetic Marginal Fault. This suggests that the origin of the fractures is related to that of the fault. The fractures of the second set may represent Riedel shears associated with the activity of the Sudetic Marginal Fault. The orientations of minor faults confirm this supposition. Summing up, we believe that during the Pleistocene, the Sudetic Marginal Fault was a dextral strike-slip fault, at least in the discussed area.

In Poland, the average Zn contents in river sediments keep up the level 100 mg/kg. The largest accumulations of zinc (up to 10 000 mg/kg), found in river sediments in the Upper and Lower Silesia area, are the result of mining and industrial activity in these regions. In the remaining parts of the country the contents are clearly smaller, except for the conurbation areas (Lis & Pasieczna, 1995). At present, forecasts of behavior of me- tals present in solid environmental samples are usually based on results of chemical fractionation. In this approach, metals are extracted by treating samples with solutions of increasing solubilization potential and simulating extgraction of metals under natural and anthropogenically modified environmental conditions (Rauret, 1998). The studies covered speciation of zinc in river sediments of the Nida and Radomka drainage basins. The chemical fractionation of zinc was conducted in accordance with three-stage procedure of sequential extraction BCR (at present, Standard Measurement and Testing Program), worked out by Ure et al. (1993). The aim of investigations was to compare forms of occurrence of zinc in sediments of rivers flowing through areas differing in geochemical background and characterized by differences in content of anthropogenic zinc. The speciation of zinc in sediment samples from the Radomka drainage basin gave results clearly different from those for sediments from the Nida drainage basin, which may reflect differences in land use. The content of zinc in the studied samples was found to change for 8 mg/kg in bottom deposits of Radomka River at Domaniów to 267 mg/kg in those of Mleczna River at Firlej in the Radomka drainage basin and from 88 mg/kg in sediments of Maskalis River at Brzezie to 101 mg/kg in those of the Brzeźnica River at Raków in the Nida drainage basin.

Opis:
Contents of several heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Cd, Co) in alluvium and soils of flood-plains of Pisia River between Żyrardów and Sochaczew were analysed. Analyses have been carried out in the same points and using analogical procedure twice: in 1994 and 2001. Within this time a significant improvement of the river chemical status took place due to economic changes and reduced sewage pollution discharged in Żyrardów. Distinct decrease of heavy metals contents in alluvium in Żyrardów area and their migration down the Pisia valley were observed. At the same time, elevated heavy metal levels were found in soils of the flood-plains as a result of their migration from the river-bed.

In the recentyears intensified landslidingwas observed in the surroundings and in the town of Koronowo near Bydgoszcz. (Krajeñskie Lake District). The gently undulated moraine upland, a wide valley of the Brda river, its relatively steep valleysides and incised valleys of tributaries are morphologicfeatures related to modeling by North Polish Glaciation. Quaternary tills alternated with fluvioglacial sands and gravels are underalined by Miocene clay and mud with brown coal intercalations. Due to such morphologic and geologic setting the study area isprone to slope instability. Failure apt soil massifs were assigned to 4 groups. Out of 32 identified landslides, 9 were selected for detailed examination. To register a nature and rate of failures a complex monitoring system was installed on slopes where the selected landslides resulted in severe damages to municipal infrastructure. The system was facilitated with inclinometers andpiezometers, supported by a network of GPS-RTK geodetic benchmarks as well as with a recording weather station. The performed examination revealed that the most unfavourable arrangement of the layers is, when under a non-cohesive soil (e.g. sand, gravel) lies a cohesive impermeable layer (e.g. clay, loam). The landslides are rather shallow ones (except 2 incidents) with slow rate of displacement of an order offew mm/year. The landslide triggeringfactor is water originatingfrom precipitation and snow melting. Influence of water was especially significant in early Spring 2011, due to the combined effect ofsnow melting and infiltration of thawing water originating from the former, exceptionally high rainfalls. The influence of hydrologic conditions on slope deformations is complex. There is a significant timelag between a movement initiation and unfavourable hydrometeorological conditions. That is exemplified with the landslide that was initiated in February-March 2011 in consequence of atmospheric conditions of November-December 2010. The obtained results formed the background for inventing engineering treatment measures aiming at current remedial stabilization of slopes and mitigation ofpossible landsliding in the future.

The western part of Podhale region is drained by the Czarny Dunajec and the Biały Dunajec rivers, flowing from the Tatra Mts., and streams originating in the region (Cichy Stream, Bystry Stream, Czerwony Stream, Wielki Rogoźnik). River banks are cut in the Podhale Flysch or in the alluvium of these rivers overlain with loam deposits of varied origin. This paper investigates the combined effect of weathering, frost processes and mass movements on the banks of the Czarny Dunajec River and its tributaries typified by different substrate material. Bank retreat due to frost processes was measured during multigelation periods using erosion pins. Grain size distribution and cohesion of the substrate were also determined for alluvial and loam deposits. On flysch cutbanks, we determined joint spacing and the density and direction of fractures, and other structural and textural characteristics of the rocks. The results indicate that the rate of bank retreat decreases from the banks cut in sandy loam deposits, through alluvial loam banks (with high clay content), the banks composed of poorly cemented gravels and shaly flysch, to the banks cut in sandstones and highly cemented Neogene gravels. Bank retreat due to frost processes and mass-wasting was more efficient in the cold half-year.

One of channel features, which seems to be importantfor river engineering projects, is possibility of existence of natural trends of currents distribution. The recurrence of thalweg direction can be connected among other reasons with the susceptibility to erosion of deposits that build up the channel zone. The aim of the study was determination of alluvia basement influence on channel morphodynamics. The article presents the results of bathymetric measurements that were carried out in two non-engineered sections of the Bug River channel within its Podlaski Gorge and two sections of the Middle Vistula: in the Basonia (Małopolska Gorge) and Dęblin (examples of engineered channel) regions. The study was conducted with the use of sonar coupled with aDGPS receiver. Measurements were performed under conditions of low and medium water levels. The study also included geological research of the river channel (drillings). The analysis of channel morphology changes was performed in GIS environment. The studies have shown a link between morphology of the alluvia basement (composed of erosion-resistant deposits) and the flow directions. This phenomenon is observed in the river channel regardless of the flow rate.

The paper presents the results of morphometric, structural and granulometric analyses carried out on sandy ribbons developed on the lower Vistula river floodplain in the Torun and Unisław Basins. The landforms identified were classified in respect to their shape, sedimentary structures and degree of preservation. Their origin and relation to other flood deposits were described and illustrated in the map of thickness and extent of sandy flood deposits in the Świecie Basin.

Opis:
Concentrations of chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB28, PCB52, PCB101, PCB118, PCB153, PCB138, PCB180), were determined in 80 river sediment samples collected from the whole area of Poland. Chlorinated pesticides were found in almost all samples. The most frequently detected pesticides were isomer y-HCH (Lindane) and the DDT group compounds. The concentrations of Lindane exceeding the detection limit were recorded in 95% of samples and Lindane contents above the PEL value were noted in 32.5% of the analysed samples. The high contests of pesticides were recorded mainly in river sediments near urban-industrial centres. The presence of p,p’-DDT was noted in 31 samples and its metabolite p,p’-DDE —in 78 samples, and p,p’-DDD —in 69 samples. The concentration of p,p’-DDE above PEL value (6.75 ug/kg) were detected in 9 samples, p’-DDD (8.51 ug/kg) —in 9 samples, p,p’-DDT —in 13 samples. Of the remaining pesticides the concentrations of heptachlor epoxide exceeding the detection limit were observed in 5 sediment samples, Dieldrin —in 15 samples, Aldrin —in 10 samples, Endrin —in 10 samples, Endosulfan I only in 1 sample, Endosulfan II — in 4 samples and Methoxychlor — in 2 samples. The concentrations of Heptachlor epoxide higher than the PEL value (2,74 ug/kg) were detected in 1 sample (1.3%). Of 48.8% of the analysed river sediment samples contained polychlorinated biphenyls above detection limit; in two locations the PCB concentrations were high enough to pose a threat for water organisms.

A distinct zonality as shown in the occurrence of trace elements accumulated in the flood facies of the Vistula River between Annopol and Gołąb. Their amount may be linked with the character and dynamics of river flow in its particular stretches because the nature of the fluvial processes influences on the lithological composition of deposits. Thus the content of these elements in the deposits is related to the geomorphologic conditions of the valley evolution, such as the occurrence of gorge zones and zones with free channel development. The highest concentrations have been noted in flood deposits occurring as intercalations within the channel facies and deposited in the widest parts of the river valley. The lowest concentrations of the trace elements have been observed in the gorge zones of the valley. These are places where the flow is most dynamic, enabling only the formation of low and medium cohesive silty flood deposits with low contents of organic matter, iron oxides and calcium carbonate.

The lithostratigraphy of the Pleistocene high meadow terrace deposits in the Łagowica Valley near Masłowiec, southeastern part of the Holy Cross Mountains, central Poland, is presented against the background of geological features and relief of the valley in the Łagów–Ruda segment. The lithostratigraphic divisions for the Holy Cross Mountains assume Middle- Polish Glaciation age for high terraces in valleys. Hypsometry of terraces often served to estimate their age. Detailed sedimentological analysis of deposits forming the terrace of the Łagowica Valley near Masłowiec (textural and structural features, TL and OSL datings) have indicatived a complex fluvial-deluvial origin of the deposits and their Plenivistulian, not Middle Polish Glaciation age. The actual aggradation of the valley bottom has been partly masked by slope processes, which due to local lithostructural conditions, significantly participated in the Łagowica Valley bed aggradation. This problem is well-known in other upland regions of Poland and has been only briefly noted in the Holy Cross Mountains. The research methods and results can be useful in establishing the origins of deposits building meadow terraces, also then when only borecore material is available. The methods can also faciltate stratigraphic interpretation of deposits dated with TL and OSL methods

Opis:
The study area (20 km2) covers part of the Vistula River's delta front and prodelta, active since 1895. The Vistula river-mouth fan is a unique area of intense accumulation of clastic material, whose development can be investigated from a precisely defined moment in the history of its origin to the present day. The research has resulted in a morphodynamic model (based on bathymetric plans of the contemporary Vistula mouth area over the period of 1894–2000) and a facies model of the Vistula mouth fan. The analysis of the morphometric models shows that 105 years after the Vistula Cross-Cut was opened, the volume of the sediment accumulated in the fan was 133.39 million m3 and the rate of accretion has decreased. Facial models were created on the basis of results of lithological analysis of sediments. The Vistula mouth fan is built of delta front sediments represented mainly by sand facies (fine-, medium- and coarse-grained, locally with gravel, as well as marine and freshwater mollusc shells), only locally by silt facies. The thickness of the river-mouth fan sands is 11–15 m. The prodelta sediments are found on the fan's forefield within a depth zone of 12–16 m, and they also underlie the fan sediment. Their thickness is up to ca. 10 m. Cluster analysis of the individual grain-size distributions made it possible to distinguish two lithofacies in the Vistula mouth fan: lithofacies A (fine-grained sand, silty sands, clayey silt) and lithofacies B (medium-grained and coarse-grained sand). This allowed reconstructing the processes which has taken place over the last 100 years, and to forecast future changes in the development of the active part of the Vistula Delta.

The authors described micro-scale carbonate concretions occurring at a depth of about 41 m within Holocene sandy sediments filling the Guadiana River paleovalley, representing the transitional fluvial- -estuarine facies. Despite their minute sizes, the micro-concretions show a complex internal structure. Regular distribution of Mg, Mn and Ca can be assigned to a chemical zoning, pointing to precipitation under varying chemical conditions. Based on morphological and chemical peculiarities, four types of concretions can be distinguished. Detrital Fe-Mg-carbonates form nuclei. At first, Mn-rich carbonate precipitated as a coating, which is coherent with the sequence of precipitation of carbonates associated with bacteria-mediated oxidation of organic matter. Subsequently, the main bodies of concretions precipitated as Fe-carbonate (siderite). The last precipitation episode is marked by enrichment in Ca. The XRD patterns show the presence of a mixture of discrete carbonate phases.
