Opis:
This paper summarizes four years of geological research in the Pomerania Bay and Oder Bank. As a result of the synthesis of new and archival data,we have compiled maps, cross-sections and models depicting the geological structure of the Quaternary and its basement, and the relief of structural surfaces. Two main seismostratigraphic sedimentary complexes are distinguished. The first corresponds to Pleistocene glacial and interstadial deposits. The second one is composed of Late Glacial and Holocene lacustrine-swamp and marine sediments. The outline of geochemical condition of the sea bottom is also presented. The content of the elements is always below the acceptable concentration and the origin of the elements is geogenic. Special attention has been given to mineral resources on the bottom surface and to documenting deposits of sand containing heavy minerals. The characterization of areas with sands suitable for beach nourishment and valorization of deposits and prospective areas have also been of great importance. The history of the development of the geological structure and palaeogeography of the area is the summary of the results.

Opis:
The paper presents results of studies on macroscopic remains of wood, herbs and sporophyte plants ound in Quaternary deposits of the Bełchatów outcrop. Their taxonomic position was defined along with condition of wood remains in relation to type of deposits. In Pliocene/ Pleistocene (Praetiglian) sand deposits, the large and well-preserved fragment of poplar wood and in Pilica Interstadial (Chojny series) sands pine branches were discovered. In the latter the compression wood was very well preserved, whereas the normal wood appears highly pressed and the regular ray rows were remaining only in the late wood. Many small fragments of alder wood were also found in Vistulian/Holocene peats and juniper and spruce - in Holocene deposits. Generative and vegetative remains of herbs from Vistulian/Holocene peat deposits were also investigated. In Vistulian/Holocene deposits small fragments of alder wood (Alnus Mill.) were found and in Holocene deposits - small fragments of scotsch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), common spruce (Picea abies Karst), common juniper (Juniperus communis L.) and alder wood (Alnus Mill.). Besides, some sedge (Carex L.) and buckbean (Menyanthes trifoliata L.) were discovered in these deposits.

In 21st century the chronostratigraphy of cave sediments is built on the basis of modern methods: sedimentological analysis, statistical analysis of palaeozoological data, radiometric and luminescence dating and many others. For the time of last 50 000 years the four geochronological units (or appropriate chronostratigraphic units) are usually proposed in Poland in the researches of cave sediments. They are: Interpleniglacial, Upper/Younger Pleniglacial, Late Glacial and Holocene. That scheme has over 150 years of evolution, and its origin was tied with biostratigraphical scheme built by Edouard Lartet in a middle of 19th century. Lartet's stratigraphy for the same period was also made of four units: Cave Bear Epoch, Mammoth and Wooly Rhinoceros Epoch, Reindeer Epoch and Auroch Epoch. Although basing on different methods and using different terminology, the two schemes – from the 19th and from 21st centuries – are similar and correlatabl

Opis:
The Anthropocene is a new epoch proposed by Crutzen and Stoermer (2000), with a base at 1950 AD or 1800 AD. The present author doubts its value while studying Quaternary stratigraphic columns, as its base signal (Holocene/Anthropocene) might be unrecognizable in field sections. The usage of the Anthropocene epoch would probably be restricted to areas of massive direct negative human impact on Nature, predominantly in the Northern Hemisphere. In much less affected Southern Hemisphere deserts (Australia), mountain chains (the Andes), the near-pristine glaciated Antarctic continent and Subantarctic islands, separation of the Anthropocene time-unit (as a formal epoch) from the Holocene epoch would be artificial, even useless. On the other hand, the informal term might be useful for economic geographers, planners, sociologists, and Nature- protectionists.

Opis:
In the northern part of the Podhale Region, nearly 100 years ago, Matkowski (1924, 1928) described gravels exposed in a quarry in Szaflary and considered them to be moraine sediments - Szaflar moraine. Romer (1929) confirmed this interpretation of the sediments. Later studies of Halicki (1930), Klimaszewski (1948, 1988), Birkenmajer (1976) and Birkenmajer and Stuchlik (1975) completely excluded the possibility of moraines in this area and showed that these sediments have are of fluvioglacial origin. Comparing the quarry's ranges due to exploitation, it was found that the authors could observe various deposits exposed during the progress of exploitation towards the west. In the profiles of trenches for new buildings to the NW from the quarry, clays containing sands and gravels and individual boulders and blocks of quartzite and granite with a diameterof0.8 to 1.2m were found. The exposed erratics exactly correspond to the description of the moraine by Matkowski (1924, 1928) from the quarry in Szaflary. In addition, in the recently drilled Nowy Targ PIG-2 borehole, similarly developed pieces were found at a depth of19.7-69.5 m. Combining archival data and new facts from drilling and exposures, a view can be proposed that, during the Southern Polish Glaciations, the Tatra glaciers reached the Nowy Targ Basin and perhaps the foothills of the Gorce Mts, which was already suggested by Rehman (1895), Zapatowicz (1913) and Matkowski (1928).

Opis:
Geological mapping is a highly interpretive and scientific process that produces a range of map products for many different uses, basically for sustainable land and mineral resources management. This is a primary and principal task of all geological surveys in the world. The establishment of the Polish Geological Institute in 1919 founded a basic framework for geological mapping in Poland. After the Second World War, an extensive production of geological (serial, regional and thematic) maps at different scales in atlases and scientific publications was initiated. Within the past 30 years, geographic information system (GIS) technology has begun to change geologic mapping by providing software tools, a use of which permits geological data to be electronically stored, displayed, queried and analysed in conjunction with a seemingly infinite variety of other data types. The fully automatic process of map generalization and its founding on hierarchic geological vocabularies will enable flexible presentation of geological data while passing from one scale to another. New technological advances and international standards in description, collection, exchange and visualisation ofgeological data, as well as its connection with external resources, will result in substantial enrichment of information in databases and will create new possibilities in search and use of data in the Web.

Opis:
In order to better constrain the hydrogeological conditions to the depth of 50 m in the area of water extraction for Wroclaw city, a multi-faceted geophysical survey has been applied. We have combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) techniques. The results of geophysical investigations indicate the presence of three rock layers with different permeability. The first layer, up to 2 m below ground surface, represents a discontinuous horizon composed of impermeable rocks. The next one, a porous and permeable stratum (aquifer) with a thickness of approx. 5-10 m, comprises saturated sands and gravels. The observed aquifer is characterized by good hydrogeological parameters, wherein hydraulic conductivity (k) equals 5 X 10-4 m/s and porosity reaches 23%. The third layer, below 10 m, is composed of loamy impermeable sediments intercalated with moraine till. At greater depths (>20 m) they are still loamy rocks, but occurring with interbeds of sands (sandy loam). This is confirmed by the hydraulic conductivity in the order of 10-6 m/s, which is typicalfor semi-permeable rocks. Noteworthy, no additional aquifers have been observed to the depth of 50 m.

The central (Paleozoic) and the south-western (Permian-Mesozoic) parts of the Holy Cross Mts. region are areas of typical structural morphology controlled by fold-type tectonic structure and lithology. In the northern (Mesozoic) marginal part of the region structural arrangement of main relief elements is not so clear due to the block-type tectonics, however, some morphological features, such as the valley network, elongation of glacial, kame-type landforms and orientation of rock cliffs are related to joint system. The general relief elements of part of the Nida Basin region adjoining the Holy Cross Mts. are of noeotectonic origin, while the subordinate landforms represent typical structural morphology. The role of recent tectonic factor should be also taken into account in the Holy Cross Mts., however, the identification of tectonic influence on the current relief of this region is very difficult.

During the Pleistocene, the Cracow-Częstochowa Upland was covered by the Scandinavian ice sheets two times, which was stated already at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Odra glaciation had probably the biggest impact on the relief of this area . The geometry of this part of the ice sheet was reconstructed on the basis of the analysis of the sub-Quaternary morphology and location of the glacial tills. The modeling of thickness of the ice sheet during the odra glaciations shows, that it was small (110–350 m) in the northern part of the analyzed area. Longitudinal profiles of the ice sheet are fairly gentle, which is typical for glaciers with high activity.

Opis:
The article identifies the hydrogeochemical environments controlling the chemical composition of groundwater in the Lódź agglomeration. The study was conducted with a different position of the groundwater table within: the Quaternary, Upper- and Lower Cretaceous aquifers. These aquifers are continuously exploited from a long time till present. The papers focuses on geogenic factors resulting from geological construction, lithology, circulation in the Lódź basin and anthropogenic factors associated with the change of the circulation system and the potential migration of pollution from the surface. The chemical composition of water from the Quaternary, Upper- and Lower Cretaceous aquifers was stable, without any anthropogenic changes. The hydrochemical inversion of water within the Cretaceous aquifers is the result of the different lithology of these aquifers and the variation in the way and magnitude of groundwater recharge.

The investigated area is located in the middle section of the Warta River valley, where the Neogen deposits with lignite series occur within the Adamów tectonic graben. In the Kozmin-North excavation, opened for extraction in 2008 and belonging to the "Adamów"Lignite Mine, the Neogene deposits are covered with an about 30-m thick Quaternary series. The research was carried out to identify the origin and age of the Quaternary sediments. As a result, four sandy series and three till series were identified, which were deposited during the South Polish Glaciations and Middle Polish Glaciations. North Polish Glaciations sediments developed in extraglacial conditions.
