Opis:
The limits of fourmajor icesheets can be traced in the present landscape of Poland. Glacial deposits and ice-dammed lakes indicate a stream-like pattern of advancing ice bodies, dependent both on ice dynamics in the marginal zones and on the pre-existing landscape in their forefields. The southernmost extent of the Pleistocene ice sheets is indicated by the Scandinavian erratics and was formed by the South Polish Glaciations (Elsterian), partly replaced in the west by the Odranian of the Middle Polish Glaciations (Saalian I). The subsequent Wartanian Glaciation of the Middle Polish Glaciations (Saalian II) and the Vistulian Glaciation (North Polish Glaciation, Weichselian) were limited to areas further to the north.

Opis:
Analysis of the Earth’s surface using three-dimensional models provides a wealth of new interpretation opportunities to geologists and geomorphologists. Linear elements, not visible on classical maps, become distinct features; it is also possible to interpret both small-scale glacial landforms and entire complexes of postglacial landscapes at the regional scale. Geomorphic features are frequently difficult to recognise in the field, either due to their scale or field obstacles. Three-dimensional visualization of the Earth’s surface and its examination at different angles and differently orientated source of light is extremely helpful in geological and geomorphological studies. This tool is, however, relatively seldom used due to either limited access to digital data bases or time-consuming procedures of individual construction of such bases from the existing cartographic data. For instance, analysis of small-scale glacial, fluvial or aeolian landforms in lowland areas requires cartographic data of resolution compatible with 1 : 10,000 scale. Nevertheless, less detailed digital elevation models, constructed at the scale of 1 : 50,000, are also extremely helpful, since they allow for regional interpretations of those morphostructures which are associated not only with neotectonics, but also with ice-flow directions, block disintegration of an ice-sheet, subglacial drainage, stages of fluvial erosion, or location of dune belts. A possibility of superposition of geological or geomorphological maps onto 3-D models is equally important, enhancing readability of the maps and providing clues to verification of the origin of landforms and proper cross-cutting relationships drawn on the map.

The paper presents the investigation results concerning the origin and transformation of the morainic landscape in the northwest part of Lubawa Upland. Detailed sedimentological studies of the sediments within the morainic hill in Rożental and the reconstruction of their depositional and deformational processes are presented. We proposed a model of landscape formation and transformation in examined area. The reconstruction of the palaeogeographical conditions which have been prevailed during the late Pleistocene is also proposed. Collected data show that morainic landscape in the northwestern part of Lubawa Upland reveal landforms of an older origin. It is suggested that relief of examined area consist some features of "palimpsest landscape". The older glacial landforms, formed before the last ice advance, can exist here.

Opis:
The salinization of Cenozoic aquifers caused by brines ascending from the Mesozoic was described on the basis of results of 7747 archival chemical analyses. The zones of confirmed aquifer salinization, defined by chloride concentration exceeding 60 mg/dm^3 and 70 mg/dm^3 (upper limits of hydrochemic background values), within the Pleistocene and Paleogene, Miocene and Pliocene usable groundwater aquifers respectively, occupy an area of 8600 km^2 (33 % of the study area), whilst the zones of potential salinization hazard extend on further 4900 km^2 (19%). The groundwater salinization zones are mostly connected with the uplifted tectonic blocks, salt anticlines and fault zones, the structures allowing upwards directed migration of the Mesozoic brines into the Cenozoic useful aquifers. The salinization development is generally controlled by the flow directions within the active circulation zone and causes migration of brines under pressure along the tectonically produced pathways. The salinity increase affecting groundwater in the Cenozoic aquifers does not result from the recent leaching of the Zechstein salt bod-ies, as they are mostly isolated from the groundwater active circulation system. The ascending diluted brines constitute a potential threat to 4 (Uznam–101 and Wolin–102, Rooecino–103, Dębno–134) from among 20 Major Groundwater Reservoirs and to 17 from among 31 main municipal groundwater intakes (total well discharge >100 m^3/h).

Opis:
An overview of the existing opinions combined with new geomorphological, geological, palaeopedological and TL data allow a new look at the number, age and ranges of the three Middle Polish (Saalian, Dnieperian) Glaciations in central-eastern Poland. During the first of these glaciations (Liviecian), correlated with the 10 oxygen isotope stage in deep-marine deposits (400–360 ka), the Scandinavian ice-sheet advanced in form of a rather narrow lobe, reaching only several tens of kilometres south of Warsaw. During the second glaciation (Krznanian), correlated with the 8 oxygen isotope stage (330–320 ka), it advanced in form of a wider lobe down to the northern margin of the Małopolska and Lublin uplands. In turn, during the third glaciation (Odranian), correlated with the 6 oxygen isotope stage (210–130 ka), the range of the Scandinavian ice-sheet was the largest. It stopped at the elevations of the Quaternary basement in the northern and western part of the Małopolska and Lublin uplands, reaching 330–280 m above sea level. In the study area the discussed glaciations are separated by two interglacials (Zbójnian, Lublinian = Lubavian), correlated with the Reinsdorf and Schöningen interglacials in Germany and Landos and Le Bouchet interglacials in France. The analysed data indicate that within the Odranian Glaciation, its maximum (Kamienna = Drenthe) and postmaximum stadials (Warta = Warthe), as well as two younger recessive stadials (Wkra, Mławka) should be distinguished. Due to the rather wide eastward distribution of the Scandinavian ice-sheets during the two younger glaciations, an attempt has been made to correlate them with the two Dnieperian glaciations in the Ukraine.

Since the mid-1950s, when Jerzy Znosko started his huge contribution to the recognition of the crystalline basement of NE Poland, many different studies have followed the planned and implemented drilling projects. The drillings, conducted in the first decade under the leadership of Professor Znosko and under his description of the results, were further worked out by other researchers. Studies concerned petrological, geochemical and miner- alogical aspects. In that fan of methods applied, geochronological data started to be introduced to the bibliography of the area in the early 1960s. Geochronological methods that time mean mostly K-Ar and some Rb-Sr values. These materials are gathered in the paper aiming at its presentation, re-valuation and interpretation in terms of the significance of such data for further development of knowledge.

Thermal waters (61°C) occurring in the Lower Jurassic reservoirs in the Pyrzyce region (approx. 1600 m b.s.l.) are used mainly in heating plant and their chemical composition allow to apply them in balneology and recreation. In the summer time in the Pyrzyce plant only the geothermal waters are used. In the autumn-winter season, when higher temperatures of water for municipal network are needed, the system is supported by absorption heat pumps. Usage of geothermal waters in the Pyrzyce municipal heat system eliminated small carbon boilers and reduced considerable emission of harmful substance to atmosphere.

The Detailed Geological Map of Poland in scale 1:50,000 (DGMP 1:50,000) is elaborated in Polish on the base of geological mapping, especially drilled boreholes to subQuaternary basement as well as geological and geophysical surveys and laboratory studies. The whole edition comprises 1069 sheets. The Detailed Geological Map of Poland in the scale 1:50,000 published from 1954 together with explanations, forms a compendium of geological knowledge of the area. It is a basic map which is being used for construction of all the other consecutive thematic maps of the country, either in detailed or in regional scales. The Map is supplemented with one or two geological sections, typical for the area: one of them (Quaternary deposits) is prepared in highly exaggerated vertical scale. Each sheet is provided with brochure text explanations, containing description of the geological structure of the area, logs of the more significant boreholes, geomorphological and subQuaternary basement sketches and the results of field and laboratory analyses.

Opis:
The idea of establishing protected landscape parks was put forward in Poland 50 years ago. The result was fairly quick expansion in the number of protected landscape areas, up to 120 by now. Figures 1 and 2 show the progress in creation of such areas and their geographical distribution. The major goals and approach in management of the landscape parks were changing in time. The following stages may be distinguished in the landscape parks policy: protection of environment followed by landscape protection, protection of nature diversity and currently - biodiversity conservation (in accordance with Natura 2000 prerogatives). Also "geodiversity" make it necessary to treat the existing landscape parks as the potential areas of geoparks. One of key requirements which should be met by geoparks is a network of geological sites subjected to legal protection. These sites are the "backbone" of geopark. The paper presents situation in the Polish landscape parks with regard of this requirement by the end of the year 2008. At that time the number of geoconservation objects selected and categorized in 75 of those parks reached 551 (Fig. 3). Table 1 shows the typology of geological sites in relation to their importance for the Earth sciences The objects of the category A are the most valuable for geology whereas the remaining ones are mainly of geomorphological (B) and hydrological (C) value. Tables 2, 3 and 4 show the current state of conservation of geological sites in Polish landscape parks. In that presentation the area of Poland was divided into two parts with the line of extent of the Warta Glaciation as the boundary (Fig. 2). The Pleistocene deposits predominate north of that boundary whereas rocks of older stratigraphic units crop out at the surface south of it.

Opis:
The Gorzów Block (West Poland) occurs in the transition zone between the PZ1 sulphate platform and the Na2 basin. In contrast to the western part of the Southern Permian Basin where the Z1 halite (Oldest Halite Na1) is normally restricted to the peripheral subbasins located south of the main basin, in Poland it occurs both in the basin centre and in the former basins of the Lower Anhydrite within the marginal sulphate platform complex, where halite sequences are thick and may have originated in a deep-water setting. The Na1 deposits have been considered so far to be LST deposits both in the marginal sulphate platform facies as well as in the basin centre. Brine salinities (and the minerals they precipitate) are controlled by brine residence times in the basin, and these are determined primarily by the absolute and the relative rates of water flow into, and brine flux out of the basin (Kendall, 2010). Thus sea-level rise in the Boreal Sea could have resulted in the increase of the brine residence times in the Zechstein basin and the deposition of more saline evaporites. Consequently, the Oldest Halite in the basin centre in Poland is regarded as the TST deposit.

Dr Tadeusz Depciuch (1928–2007), geochemist, mineralogist and economic geologist, longtime employee of the Polish Geological Institute in Warsaw, as the first scientist in Poland who conducted a systematic study on isotopic age of crystalline rocks. In 1966, after preliminary age determinations by Dr Jerzy Borucki, he undertook research of crystalline rocks of the Lower Silesian Block, mainly granites, and subsequently of rocks of the basement of the Polish part of the East European Precambrian Platform penetrated in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as igneous rocks of its cover. He used the K-Ar method, applying its volumetric variety on own-designed equipment. Age determinations allowed identifying the magmatic and metamorphic stages of the development of the crystalline basement evolution, and establishing the stratigraphy. They also played an important role in the research on Variscan plutonism in Lower Silesia. Tadeusz Depciuch participated in prospecting for uranium deposits in the Sudetes, using geochemical methods, and studied the origin of some deposits. In 1974–1984, he worked in Africa (Benin) as a UN expert in the field of geochemistry and economic geology.

The exploitation of thermal waters from the Triassic, Jurassic and carbonate Eocen is conducted by PEC Geothermia Podhalańska with three wells: Bańska PGP-1, Bańska PGP-3 and Bańska IG-1. The groundwater discharge rates from each well change over time, depending on the energy requirements of the heating installation. As a consequence, the proportions of water exploited by the wells and mixed in the heating system are fluctuating. This paper presents results ofphysicochemical research of water from geothermal wells, which were carried out under various operating conditions. The data were used to evaluate changes in the hydrogeochemical specificity of water exploited from individual wells and mixed in the installation. Hydrogeochemical modelling was performed with the analysis of changes of ion speciation depending on the exploitation parameters. Consideration is given to the results obtained during the summer, when the water extraction rate is lower (providing energy coverage for hot water) and in the winter, when the extraction rate is considerably higher (for heat and hot water supply). The results of the modelling allow identification of the impact of the performance parameters of the wells on the water characteristics of the system before and after geothermal heat exchangers.

Opis:
In the 100 years' history of the Polish Geological Institute, the “‘Solidarność” conspiracy after the imposition of the martial law on 13th December was a unique experience. Despite very severe restrictions, the origin al organization al structures continued to function in clandestine fashion. Membership dues were collected by designated trusted persons, thereby permitting the purchase of underground printed books and periodicals to be distributed among the Union members or handed over to our clandestine library. The funds were also used to help Union members in need, or to support artists who refused to appear in government-controlled media. Many of us joined the yearly pilgrimage to Częstochowa, demonstrating their anti-governmental attitude. In 1986, with other geological communities, a further pilgrimage was made to Rome where a banner with a “Solidarność” emblem was posted on St. Peter's Square. Our members were present on each patriotic demonstration organized by the headquarters of “Solidarnność” on various occasions and brutally surpressed by militia, and attended the funerals of Grzegorz Przemyk and Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, both tortured to death by the security service. Despite all the restrictions, our clandestine Union survived until the fall of the communist regime in 1989, which can be credited to the PGI's crew attitude.
