Opis:
The western part of Podhale region is drained by the Czarny Dunajec and the Biały Dunajec rivers, flowing from the Tatra Mts., and streams originating in the region (Cichy Stream, Bystry Stream, Czerwony Stream, Wielki Rogoźnik). River banks are cut in the Podhale Flysch or in the alluvium of these rivers overlain with loam deposits of varied origin. This paper investigates the combined effect of weathering, frost processes and mass movements on the banks of the Czarny Dunajec River and its tributaries typified by different substrate material. Bank retreat due to frost processes was measured during multigelation periods using erosion pins. Grain size distribution and cohesion of the substrate were also determined for alluvial and loam deposits. On flysch cutbanks, we determined joint spacing and the density and direction of fractures, and other structural and textural characteristics of the rocks. The results indicate that the rate of bank retreat decreases from the banks cut in sandy loam deposits, through alluvial loam banks (with high clay content), the banks composed of poorly cemented gravels and shaly flysch, to the banks cut in sandstones and highly cemented Neogene gravels. Bank retreat due to frost processes and mass-wasting was more efficient in the cold half-year.

Palaeobotanical, mainly palynological, investigations, carried out in the Tatra Mts. and Podhale region made it possible to date organic sediments as well as to trace history of migration routes of several plant taxa, mainly trees. The results of pollen analyses allowed for the reconstruction of formation of individual vegetation belts in the Tatra Mts. The development of human settlements was traced on the basis of pollen analyses of the Podhale peat bogs. The decline of the last glaciations (Weichselian) and the Holocene are the best studied periods in this area, as far as palaeobotany is concerned. In the present overview most of earlier studies were taken into consideration.

Hydrogeological maps of the Polish Tatra Mts. and Podhale region are dated back to the sixties of the last century. In that time, within the frame of the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, 1 : 300 000, the Cieszyn sheet which covered the Tatras and the Podhale region was elaborated. A very important input in the hydrogeological cartography of this region was the Hydrogeological Map of the Podhale and the adjacent areas, 1 : 100 000 published in 1982. In the 1990s accomplishment of the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, 1 : 50 000 has been launched. The area under cartographic studies covers four sheets: Czarny Dunajec, Biały Dunajec, Tatry Zachodnie, and TatryWysokie. Some new Geographic Information System data regarding the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, 1 : 50 000, such as first aquifer, its occurrence and hydrodynamics, pollution vulnerability and quality of groundwater is presently continued and complimented.

Resistivity tomography is a modern geophysical method is widely used in geological research. It is especially useful in the study of landslides and their bedrock. Such tests were performed on landslide Dzianisz located in the Podhale region. It was established on the right side of the stream Dzianisz. The surviving morphological forms indicate that this is the old landslide. In the field, made one of the geophysical cross-section length of 750 meters. The measurement was made by Wenner. With the known zone of geophysical research slide coluvial material composition and geological structure of the bedrock. The data obtained were compared with earlier results of research, done by Bober (1971). The research results new light on the construction of landslide colluwium.

Various structural observations were collected in southwestern Podhale Trough during investigations for Detailed map of Tatra Mts., scale 1 : 10 000. Fault surfaces, strikes and dips of beds and fold axes were measured in the field. Statistical analysis of results allow to recognize 5 groups of dislocations with variable types of movement, directions and age: 1) slickensides onW-E striking, almost horizontal bedding surfaces show reverse motion towards S, 2) steeply-dipping (80–90(centigrade)) faults, striking parallel to bedding and also showing reverse motion towards S, 3) vertical transcurrent faults associated with main tectonic zones, striking almost N-S, 4) normal faults striking ca 38(centigrade) (NE-SW) and 135(centigrade) (NW-SE). Attitudes of beds different from regional trend were separated. Deviations are caused by flexural bending along tectonic zones. Anomalous attitudes of beds coincide with directions of dislocations recognized in the field. A map of lineaments in the study area is also presented. Analysis of landforms on Digital Terrain Model (DTM) led to recognition of series of lineaments related to either tectonic structures or lithology. Main transverse tectonic zones were identified on the map of lineaments: Chochołowski Potok-Czarny Dunajec, Kooecieliski Potok, Mała Łąka; as well as some minor faults and zones where particular directions of faults predominate. Statistic analysis of directions of tectolineaments allows to recognize 4 main directions: 1) about 90°, associated to thrusts and folds (parallel to strikes of beds), 2) N-S and slightly oblique directions associated to transcurrent zones, 3) approximately 40(centigrade) and 4) 140(centigrade) directions associated to normal faults. Results obtained using these 3 methods (analysis of field data, analysis of DTM, analysis of attitudes of beds different from regional trend) are consistent with each other.

Opis:
In the northern part of the Podhale Region, nearly 100 years ago, Matkowski (1924, 1928) described gravels exposed in a quarry in Szaflary and considered them to be moraine sediments - Szaflar moraine. Romer (1929) confirmed this interpretation of the sediments. Later studies of Halicki (1930), Klimaszewski (1948, 1988), Birkenmajer (1976) and Birkenmajer and Stuchlik (1975) completely excluded the possibility of moraines in this area and showed that these sediments have are of fluvioglacial origin. Comparing the quarry's ranges due to exploitation, it was found that the authors could observe various deposits exposed during the progress of exploitation towards the west. In the profiles of trenches for new buildings to the NW from the quarry, clays containing sands and gravels and individual boulders and blocks of quartzite and granite with a diameterof0.8 to 1.2m were found. The exposed erratics exactly correspond to the description of the moraine by Matkowski (1924, 1928) from the quarry in Szaflary. In addition, in the recently drilled Nowy Targ PIG-2 borehole, similarly developed pieces were found at a depth of19.7-69.5 m. Combining archival data and new facts from drilling and exposures, a view can be proposed that, during the Southern Polish Glaciations, the Tatra glaciers reached the Nowy Targ Basin and perhaps the foothills of the Gorce Mts, which was already suggested by Rehman (1895), Zapatowicz (1913) and Matkowski (1928).

Opis:
Determination of alternative water management in actively exploited geothermal system, which constitutes a significant source of renewable energy requires recognition and determination of reservoir and hydrogeothermal conditions for long-term, safe exploitation of geothermal energy. This paper provides assumptions for the conceptual model, the necessary step to execute numerical modeling of the Podhale geothermal reservoir. For the analyzed area geological conditions were determined, yielding 19 geological structures diverse in terms of thermal parameters, permeability, porosity and rock density. Main trends of tectonic dislocation and groundwater flow directions were indicated along with and characterization of thermal conditions. Exploitation conditions of geothermal boreholes are briefly discussed. Conceptual model for the Podhale geothermal system will subsequently allow for realization of the numerical models and determination of the maximum flow rate of thermal water, which under analyzed reservoir conditions will not disturb performance of the geothermal system, and in particular will not deplete energy resources.

Opis:
The landslide on the northern slopes of Magura Witowska is an example ofa consequent-structural type oflandslide. It has been developed due to several favorable conditions like: monoclinal layer deposition where the dip angle and direction of collapsing layers are close to those of slope exposition. Moreover, shale packages are commonly present in the bedrock. In the lower part of the landslide an elongated basin filled with peat sediments is situated. The 8-m long profile was recovered with an Instorf sampler for 14C dating and pollen analysis purposes. The results of radiocarbon dating and pollen analysis point to Subboreal and Subatlantic age of these sediments. Undisturbed biogenic sedimentation, lack of minerogenic intercalations together with the unbroken course of pollen succession suggest that the studied landslide has not undergone any significant active events since its formation.

Opis:
TheMizerna site (Polish Western Carpathians) is one of the most important Pliocene palaeobotanic sites in Central Europe. Its fresh-water deposits, laid down in a buried river valley, were studied in detail more than half a century ago in natural exposures and shallow boreholes, prior to partial drowning of the area by an artificial lake. The deposits yielded a very rich macrofossil plant collection elaborated in detail by Szafer (1954) who claimed that they represented a continuous succession of the Pliocene through Early Pleistocene plant communities. First palynological examination of the Mizerna deposits (by Oszast) was made more than half a century ago. Re-evaluation of stratigraphic and palaeoclimatic significance of macrofossil plant remains, along with a reassessment of palaeoenvironmental and sedimentary conditions during formation of the Mizerna fresh-water deposits, is in progress. This may help elucidate the problem whether the Mizerna sediments represent both the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene or, solely, the Pliocene successions.

The aim of the paper is to examine the variability of physical and chemical characteristics of two springs located in the Zagórzański Stream catchment (Spisko-Gubałowskie Foothills, Podhale region). Calcareous tufa occurs at one of the investigated springs. Field studies were conducted once a month from 25th March 2017 to 28thFebruary 2018. Water of the studied springs represents the bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium type during almost the whole year. The chemical composition of both springs is characterized by seasonal variability. The highest concentrations of most ions occurred in the summer, when the rainfall was the lowest and during winter drought; while the lowest concentration - in the period of increased rainfall. The variability of physical and chemical parameters of the spring with tufa is smaller than the other one. The spring with calcareous tufa stands out by the higher concentration of Mg2+ and SO42- and the presence of radon. The unique landscape values of the surroundings and hydrogeochemical features of the spring with calcareous tufa favour this place as an interesting hydro-tourism attraction in the Bukowina Tatrzańska region.

The chemistry of precipitation significantly alters while infiltrating through a layer of weathered rocks. The paper deals with the role of weathering mantle in shaping the chemistry of shallow groundwater in a flysch catchment basin. The analytical and modelling research show that weathering mantles also affect the formation of calcareous sinter. Based on the results of field studies, a hydrochemical model has been developed, which documents the transformation of chemical composition of groundwater. The rate of precipitating calcium carbonate is also determined. The test area covered the Suchy Stream catchment basin located within the southern flank of the Podhale basin.

Tritium and stable isotope data delta exp.18 O and delta exp.2H) for wells near the recharge area of the thermal system of the Podhale Basin indicate the presence of modern waters recharged at the lowest altitudes of the outcrops of water bearing formations. In turn, delta exp.18O and delta exp.2H values obtained for deep part of the basin may be interpreted as either the result of a high altitude recharge or a cold climate. Helium contents are in general unusually high but can not be interpreted quantitatively at the present stage of the study. The noble gas temperatures (NGT) values obtained from Ne and Ar data disagree with temperatures deduced from the known dependence of air temperature on altitude and altitudes of recharge areas found from the stable isotope data. High concentrations ofHe (ca. 10-4 cm3STP/g), and low NGT deduced from Ne and Ar concentrations suggest the presence of pre-Holocene water in the northeastern part of the basin, which means slow movement of water. Stable isotope and exp.14C data indicate the presence of much younger Holocene waters in the western part of the basin.

Thenetwork of joints cutting the flysch deposits in the western Podhale is reasonably regular both in map scale and in individual outcrops. It is formed by five sets having a different orientation with respect to the range of the Podhale Synclinorium, as well as a different age and origin. The oldest diagonal sets (DR, DL) are conjugate and roughly coeval and were formed as "potential shear surfaces" in horizontal beds, whereas their further opening proceeded in an extensional mode. The younger sublongitudinal set (L') comprises extensional joints originated during the early buckling of beds. The transverse set (T), younger than the L'-set, comprises extensional joints formed in relation to the WNW-ESE extension of the Podhale Synclinorium. The youngest longitudinal set (L) originated in an extensional mode in consequence of stress relaxation in the rock massif during postorogenic uplift. Joint density increases in areas involved in relatively strong tectonic disturbances: the zone of tectonic contact between the flysch and the Pieniny Klippen Belt, the zone of contact between the Paleogene deposits, the Tatra Massif and the Biały Dunajec fault zone.

The article presents results of two-year study that included mapping of Czarna Góra (Podhale region, Carpathians), especially in local watercourses and dirt roads after the downpour of July 31, 2010. The field research shows that sudden morphological processes were induced as a result of intense rain (debris flow, which was triggered in a road cut and many shallow and small landslides in local stream valleys). The study presents results of mapping new landforms after the downpour. Because no earlier landforms of similar origin have been found in this area, it can be concluded that the event had a unique character.
