Opis:
The paper discusses issues of the distinguishing mono-interglacials (Eemian, Mazovian and Zbojnian ones) and bi-interglacials (Ferdynandovian and Augustovian ones) pollen successions as well as a problem of cooling/glaciation within Ferdynandovian and Augustovian pollen successions. Division of the Ferdynandovian and Augustovian pollen successions into two separated interglacials each (FI and FII, AI and A II, respectivaly) and the glaciation sensu lato (F I/II and A I/II) between these interglacials from the climatostratigraphical point of view is proposed.

Opis:
The first Polish moldavites were discovered in 2012. This paper is a summary of the distribution and inventory of these Polish tektites. Up to the present, 28 moldavites have been described from seven different sandpits. These moldavites were deposited in the upper Miocene fluvial deposits of the Gozdnica Formation, as well as in the Pleistocene river terraces. Apart from a typical bottle green colour, moldavites also have other diagnostics features for this class of tektites, such as the presence of bubbles, inclusions oflechatelierite, as well as the same, homogeneous chemical composition. Fluvial redeposition was interpreted as the main process which determined moldavite distribution. Despite the most recent find of one moldavite specimen in Bielawy, all of these specimens indicate both Lusatian as well as sub-strewn Czech fields as their supply area.

Opis:
The lithostratigraphy of the Pleistocene high meadow terrace deposits in the Łagowica Valley near Masłowiec, southeastern part of the Holy Cross Mountains, central Poland, is presented against the background of geological features and relief of the valley in the Łagów–Ruda segment. The lithostratigraphic divisions for the Holy Cross Mountains assume Middle- Polish Glaciation age for high terraces in valleys. Hypsometry of terraces often served to estimate their age. Detailed sedimentological analysis of deposits forming the terrace of the Łagowica Valley near Masłowiec (textural and structural features, TL and OSL datings) have indicatived a complex fluvial-deluvial origin of the deposits and their Plenivistulian, not Middle Polish Glaciation age. The actual aggradation of the valley bottom has been partly masked by slope processes, which due to local lithostructural conditions, significantly participated in the Łagowica Valley bed aggradation. This problem is well-known in other upland regions of Poland and has been only briefly noted in the Holy Cross Mountains. The research methods and results can be useful in establishing the origins of deposits building meadow terraces, also then when only borecore material is available. The methods can also faciltate stratigraphic interpretation of deposits dated with TL and OSL methods

Erratics analysis is one of the principal methods used to study glacial sediments. Usually, simplified petrography of gravel fraction is employed, whereas more advanced techniques, based on interpreting certain rock types of Fennoscandian provenience, are still rarely used in Poland. This is mainly due to the lack of training in classifying erratic rocks, what in turn is at least partly a consequence of the lack of appropriate Polish language atlases. We are willing to bridge this gap, presenting the 33 descriptions of the indicator rock types found in the Pleistocene sediments in Poland. Most descriptions have been illustrated with colour photographs, showing either the specimens from Poland, or the ones collected during our expeditions to Sweden, Denmark and Finland. We present the most important features, which allow to both identify a sample unambiguously and to tie it to a specific outcrop in Fennoscandia. Additionally, we include the geographic coordinates of the central points of source outcrops, used to define the theoretical pebble centres position (Lüttig 1958).

Opis:
The thickness of Pleistocene deposits in the Kleszczów Graben reach 300 m. Data from these deposits are important for stratigraphic schemes of the Pleistocene of Poland. However, up to now the Mazovian Interglacial deposits were recognized from boreholes only, not from the exposures in the open-cast mine and they comprise incomplete interglacial successions. The present analysis of organic deposits from closed depression exposed on the escarpment of the mine, reveals almost the full pollen succession of the Mazovian Interglacial. The succession started with dominance of birch forest followed by birch-pine and afterwards birch-pine forest with increasing share of alder, spruce and thermophilous trees that led to development of mixed forest which corresponded to climatic interglacial optimum. First there were forests with share of yew which later were replaced by hornbeam and fir. The fir-hornbeam phase closed the climatic optimum. The distinctly colder pine phase following fir-hornbeam phase ended the interglacial succesion of plants in Folwark 93K site. On the basis of changes in diatom composition and relative (percentage) diatom frequency in this site it was determined that the fossil lake sediments represent the diatom succession of the Mazovian Interglacial. The diatom succession from Folwark has been divided into 7 local diatom assemblage zones (LDAZ Fd 1–Fd7). These zones represent four stages of paleolake development and correspond to the local and regional pollen assemblage zones of the Mazovian Interglacial. The Mazovian Interglacial age of the organic deposits from the site Folwark 93K implies the revision of the stratigraphical position of some lithostratigraphic units from the Middle Pleistocene in the Kleszczów Graben. The obtained results indicate also that at least some intensive deformations of the Lower Pleistocene deposits were completed before the Mazovian Interglacial.

Opis:
The most representative and long Late Pleistocene pollen sequences covering the late glacial of the penultimate glaciation (Warta/Pripiat), the last interglacial (Eemian/Muravian) and the early glacial of the Last Glaciation (Vistulian/Poozerie) from the territory of Poland and Belarus have been correlated. The resemblance ofpollen spectra in these pollen sequences and a parallel succession of Regional Pollen Assemblage Zones in the considered time intervals suggest that the natural environment of Poland and Belarus underwent synchronous changes under unidirectional climatic transformations. Qualitative and quantitative features of the Regional Pollen Assemblage Zones show similarities and differences in vegetation and climate changes in the study area. A comparison of the pollen spectra from Poland and Belarus suggests that both territories were affected by a similar climate particularly during the cold intervals. Some differences between the compositions of the pollen spectra were noticed as concerns the interglacial period. For instance, Abies and Taxus pollen as well as significantly high percentages of Calluna vulgaris pollen in NE Poland towards the end of the period are present only in the Polish sections. This may suggest a more Atlantic type of the climate during the Last Interglacial in Poland than in Belarus.

Opis:
Climate changes during the Pleistocene were driven by large-scale orbital perturbations as well as by internal feedbacks on the Earth. One of the main roles in climate modelling is played by the Southern Ocean that is a great source of sea ice, carbon dioxide, dissolved silica and nutrients. Numerous sediment and ice records derived from the Southern Ocean and Antarctica document high-resolution climatic changes that allow us a better understanding of global climate evolution. Consistently with the global climatic trend, several sea surface temperature (SST) records of the Southern Ocean are marked by a distinct shift from low to high glacial/interglacial variability around Termination V (T V), called the Mid-Brunhes Event (MBE). Prior to T V, the Southern Ocean’s SST displays lower values and low variability. It points to a distinct expansion of the Southern Ocean cold water masses and positional changes of hydrographical fronts during most of the lower Middle Pleistocene, which started in the Pliocene. Beside large climatic changes, several abrupt distinct warming and cooling phases have been recognized. Some of them (MIS 22–19, MIS 11 and MIS 5) show similarities to MIS 1, which could be used for future climate predictions. In this paper we would like to present the middle and late Pleistocene climatic mechanisms in the Southern Ocean, and to show SST changes in relation to the hydrographic frontal movement, sea ice development and CO2 oscillations.

Current territory of Poland was an exploration area for paleontologists from other European countries throughout the almost entire nineteenth century. A considerable part of findings were stored in institutions located beyond current borders of Poland. We have examined, documented and identified above 350 fossils housed in the Natural History Museum in Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien). The collection includes paleobotanical and paleozoological specimens from the Little Poland and the Upper Silesia. Some of these specimens are a unique material from the localities which are no longer available.

Opis:
In the northern part of the Great Mazurian Lakes there is a post-lacustrine plain extending over 90 km 2 . This depression, called Skaliska Basin (Kondracki, 1998), is situated NE of Węgorzewo, overlapping the state boundary between Poland and Russian Kaliningrd Region (thus the northernmost part of the structure was not accessible for study). A glaciolacustrine lake existed there during Late Pleistocene (Pochocka-Szwarc & Lisicki 2001a, 2003). Defining the exact extent and direction of outflow from the Skaliska Lake are most important aims for palaeogeographic investigation of the area. For paleogeomorphological analyses of the Skaliska Basin, the following methods were used: Digital Terrain Model (1 : 200,000 scale), Landsat TM satellite images, archival cartographic materials, and results of geological investigations accompanying compilation of sheets Budry (Pochocka-Szwarc, Lisicki 2001a) and Banie Mazurskie (Pochocka-Szwarc 2003) of the Detailed Geological Map of Poland (1 : 50,000). The study allowed to recognize the lateral extension of the paleolake, and reconstruct the sequence of events that led to catastrophic out flow towards the NW.

Opis:
The historic area of Warmia (western part of NE Poland) can be considered as a separate geological unit. In particular it applies to its Pleistocene sedimentary complex with a very limited occurrence of morainic deposits, commonly forming discontinuous horizons. Intermorainic deposits predominate, including mainly ice-dam lake deposits which occur at different levels. The sub-Pleistocene relief variations reach up to 400 m, with glaciotectonic upthrustings of Neogene deposits extending to the topographic surface. The province area coincides with the Warmia ice-sheet lobe of the last glaciation (Main Stadial of the Vistulian Glaciation). The eastern boundary of the area is represented by an interlobe zone coincident with the western slope of the Mazury–Suwałki Anteclise. The boundary is a tectonic discontinuity zone extending down to the crystalline basement. The eastern, anteclise area was stable during the Pleistocene, while the area of Warmia (Peri-Baltic Syneclise) was unstable mainly due to cyclic ice-sheet loads which resulted in subsidence in the Warmia region. It, in turn, caused a bending of the ice sheet body, movement acceleration and a change in ice flow direction in Warmia. During interglacials, relaxation uplifting movements triggered stronger erosional processes. These movements were dependent on surface relief, stimulating the formation of deeply rooted glaciotectonic structures.
