Opis:
The Silurian rocks of the Peri-Baltic Depression area (N Poland) were penetrated by 208 boreholes (Fig. 1). Seven new formal lithostratigraphical units were recognized and defined: The Barciany Nodular Limestones Formation (Lower Llandoverian–Rhuddnian, Aeronian), the Pasłęk Bituminous Claystones Formation with the Jantar Bituminous Black Claystone Member (Llandoverian), the Pelplin Green Claystones Formation (Wenlockian–Ludlovian), the Kociewie Claystones and Siltstones Formation with the Reda Marly Siltstones Member (Wenlockian–Ludlovian) and the Puck Marly Claystones and Siltstones Formation (Ludlovian (Ludfordian)–Pridolian). Some of the units have a character of the allostratigraphical ones sensu „North American...”, (1983) because are bordered by the sedimentary or sedimentary-erosional unconformities. The lithology, stratigraphical position, thickness, paleontological data and spatial relation of the particular units are presented (Fig. 2). Their boundaries have been established and stratotypic sections are proposed. Rock sequences of different Formations have been correlated with lithostratigraphical and genetical equivalents of the adjacent regions of Lithuania and Russia (Kaliningrad District) and also with Denmark (Bornholm) and Germany (western part of the Peri-Baltic Depression).

Opis:
The St. Elizabeth of Hungary Basilica is one of the most important and recognizable monuments of Wroclaw - the capital of Lower Silesia (SWpart of Poland). The origin of the church dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. The basilica received its present Gothic form in the 14th-15th centuries. At the foot of the church tower, overlooking the buildings of the nearby Market Square, there is a late-Gothic portal built in 1456. This is the oldest portal of the basilica. Adjacent to it, there are epitaphs of wealthy Wroclaw burghers. These monuments are the top-class works of Silesian stonemasonry and also an interesting example of the use of natural stone in constructing architectural details. From the portal and three epitaphs (devoted to the Krapps’family, Georg Althoff Scholz and Hans Schulz von Wolkovitz), atotal often samples of clastic rock were collected. These were subjected to detailed petrographic and mineralogical studies in order to determine the provenance of the stone material. The research confirmed that these architectural details were made of quartz sandstones. The probable source of this material was the Cretaceous joint sandstones from the North-Sudetic Basin (Conacian, upper joint sandstone - Rakowice type).

Petrographic types of sandstones belonging to the Baboš Quartzite Mb (Sinemurian) and the Waksmundzka Sandstone Mb (Sinemurian-Lotharingian) of the Med’odoly Sandstone Fm (Krina Unit, Fatricum) in the Kopy Sołtysie region were identified. In the literature, they were usually described as quartzites or quartzose sandstones, but in fact they represent quartz arenites or subarkose arenites. Their composition indicates that the source of clastic material was of a cratonic interior type or related to a recycled orogenic material rich in quartz. It is possible that the source was located in elevated parts of the Tatricum or Hronicum domains. Sedimentary features and facies context point to deepeningm of sedimentary environment from the shallower shelf (Baboš Quartzite Mb) to that of a deeper shelf (Waksmundzka Sandstone Mb).

Petrographical content of Pleistocene gravels (4–10 mm) derived from till and glaciofluvial deposits of Western Pomerania was studied. The coarse-grained gravels (20–60 mm) have been additionally investigated for indicator erratics. There are three dominant petrographical groups within the gravels regardless of genetic type of sediments: crystalline rocks, Lower Paleozoic limestones and sandstones. Indicator erratics indicate the most effective glacial erosion in south-eastern Sweden. Theoretical stone center is located at 57.7°N and 16°E, that is in Smĺland. Other regions where the ice sheet could have been nourished were located in Dalarna and Ĺland Islands. The most numerous erratics found in the glacial sediments are: Smĺland granites and quartz porphyries, Ĺland rapakivi granites and quartz porphyries, Bredvad porphyries, Venjan and Grönklitt porphyrites.

Opis:
A highs ignifance of the Kutno 2 deep borehole is due to its location in the central zone of the Polish Basin where the Rotliegend complex has previously never been achieved by other drill holes and thus was not recognized and studied. Drill core from the Rotligend of the Kutno2 has been recently studied for its petrography and facies. The Rotligend in this zone is represented by fluvial and alluvial sediments. It is composed mainly of fine- to coarse-grained sandstones, with conglomerate inter beds. Diagenetic processes of the sediments have been dominated by mechanical and chemical compaction, as well as by transformation of the unstable mineral components. Fluid inclusion analysis for quartz and carbonates indicates that the diagenesis-associated temperature reached 120-180°C. The presence of haematite pseudomorphoses after framboidal pyrite indicates an extremely high palaeotemperature of approx. 500°C. Itis related here to the Jurassic hydrothermal event. The recent very high reservoir pressure might be associated with high temperatures due to the aqua thermal pressure mechanism.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of erratic boulders studies in the area of Trójmiejski Landscape Park (TLP) located west of the Gulf of Gdañsk. The research objects were boulders protected as natural monuments (66 erratics) and all boulders with long axis ³ 50 cm within two testing areas (1100 erratics). Results show that erratics of the TLP often occur in clusters and their spatial density is even near 300 items/km2 in some areas. The authors selected 44 boulders which may be interesting research objects and/or have high values for geotourism. Nine erratics reveal features potentially suitable for the terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides (TCN) dating. Moreover, high number of boulders in the TLP area gives the possibility for investigations of the directions of glacial paleo-transport based on indicator erratics and analysis of glacial striae. Distinctive zones of significant clusters of boulders characterised by high attractiveness and diversified values were also indicated.

The Snochowice Beds – the Lower Jurassic gravels and conglomerates – are composed of the fragments of the most resistant rocks: the vein quartz, quartzites, quartzite sandstones and conglomerates, lydites and jaspers. The results of performed investigations allowed to modification of the existing opinion about the source areas. The results of petrographical analysis also allow to compare the group of the Snochowice Beds pebbles to the pebbles of the Lower and Upper Triassic rocks from the Mesozoic margin of the Holy Cross Mountains and the Inner Carpathians. The similarity of the main components: the pebbles of quartzites, lydites and jaspers of the Carpathian Triassic rocks and the Lower Jurassic gravels was the basis to identifying the Bohemian Massif as the source area, which was build mainly of the Paleozoic metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. In the Snochowice Beds pebbles were recognized also parts of rocks similar to the Cambrian rocks underlying the Jurassic rocks on the Upper Silesia Block.

Opis:
The sample in the formof the drill core 9 cm long and 6 cm in diameter reveals exclusively secondary wood. No growth rings have been observed. Tracheids have the width 20–50 μm (mean 25 μm) in the tangential section. Pitting on the radial walls is mainly uniseriate, partly biseriate or triseriate. The uniseriate pits are circular or oval. The biseriate and triseriate pits are polygonal (often hexagonal), distributed adjacent to each other, and densely cover the whole width of the walls. The diameter of the pits is 12±2 μm. The poruses are circular. Medullary rays are mostly uniseriate, composed of 1–46 layers; mostly between a fifteen or so and 30 layers. As the investigations are at the preliminary stage, the author prefers to use only the generic term to name the wood, namely Dadoxylon sp., without giving it a species designation. Mineralogical investigation of silicified wood was conducted using polarizing light microscope. Observations showed various the optical orientation of quartz crystals filling up cells of wood. It is observed as differentiated disapperance of polarized light. This phenomenon documents that beginning of growth of quartz crystals (center of crystallization) was located at various places of cell walls. This situation is the result of beginning of destruction of organic compounds of wall structure of cells at various places. Additionally investigation documents various intensity of silification of cordaitalean structure. Because of this the process of silification is different at various parts of tissues and one can observe parts fully petrified and completely without mineralization. The structure of wood tissues is at same places damaged by crystallizing quartz. This phenomenon is observed at the tissues where silification was continued and size of newly formed quartz crystals is overgrowth size wood cells of wood. Mentioned zones of cell destruction are especially well seen at placed where silification developed parallel to orientation of biological wood structures. In summary one can say that mentioned processes were the reason of only partial petrification (silification) of examined cordaitalean second wood.

Opis:
Tourist routes in the historic underground mining workings are an ideal base for geotourism. Lower Silesia is an area favoured in this respect, due to the amount and variety of such objects. They allow observation of different geological units: diversity of their lithology, mineralization, types of deposits, tectonics, as well as very interesting aspects of mining. This paper presents proposals of geotourist routes or observation sites in underground facilities described for Złoty Stok, Krobica, Kowary, Kletno and Osówka. Long and continuous lithological profiles, interesting rocks (e.g. rheomorphic granites in Osówka), signs of mineralization (löllingite in Złoty Stok, fluorite and amethyst in Kletno), numerous dislocation zones and folds, well-preserved historic mining workings (16th and 18th- century adits in Krobica) and many others are available for observation in these objects.

The paper presents results of organic petrography and Rock-Eval pyrolysis studies of Carboniferous rocks from Western Pomerania (N Poland). Samples for the studies were taken from core of the Dźwirzyno 3 borehole. The thermal maturity level of organic matter is determined by the values of: 1) vitrinite reflectance VR o = 0.82-0.93% and 2) T max = 431-460°C, which indicate oil window maturity. Organic petrography studies have shown a presence of different macerals dispersed in the rocks studied. Vitrinite and inertinite are particles of humic origin, while most liptinite macerals are of aquatic provenance. The Rock-Eval data clearly indicate that the organic matter forms levels made up either of kerogen type III or of kerogen type II.

Opis:
The study concerns the Miocene carbonate and mixed siliciclastic-carbonate deposits of the Pińczów and Chmielnik Formations. They are located on the south-eastern slopes of the Holy Cross Mountains. Based on the thin sections analysis the framework components, kinds of cements and character of porosity were described. The framework components were qualified according to their size, roundness and sorting. Two types of components predominate: carbonate intraclasts and non-carbonate extraclasts. Among the intraclasts, mainly well rounded algal bioclasts occur. Moreover, poorly rounded skeletal elements of bryozoans, foraminifera, echinoids, serpulids, bivalves, gastropods, as well as rare glauconite grains have also been observed. The extraclasts are represented mainly by quartz grains and rare litoclasts, among which fragments of sandstones and limestones were recognized. These grains are poorly rounded or angular. Overall, the framework components are poorly sorted. Microspar is the main kind of pore-filling carbonate cements. The examined deposits have considerable porosity. The following types of porosity were distinguished: intergranular, intragranular, intercrystalline, moldic and vuggy. Based on the results of thin sections analysis, seven types of microfacies were distinguished: algal foraminiferal packstone, algal packstone, quartz-rich algal packstone, lithoclastic algal packstone, quartz-rich bryozoan algal packstone, bryozoan packstone, quartz-rich bryozoan packstone.
