Opis:
Quartzitic sandstone was distinguished at the lower part of the Kopieniec Formation from the Lower Subtatric Nappe (Kriżna Nappe; Fatricum) between the Bystra Valley and the Olczyska Valley, in the Tatra Mts. In previous editions of the detail geological maps of the Tatra Mts, this sandstone was not marked in this area. The quartzitic sandstone crops out at Wysokie hill, east of Kuźnice and can be easily recognized in the field. The sandstone is located above the series of the dark-grey organodetrital limestones and the black calcareous sandstones of the Fatra Formation (Rhaetian) and below the typical brownish- gray claystone of the Kopieniec Formation (Hettangian). Maximum thickness of quartzitic sandstone is about 15 m.

Opis:
Regional analysis of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic geothermal aquifers in the Polish Lowlands indicates that hot waters accumulated in Lower Cretaceous and Lower Jurassic deposits should be given priority in practical utilization. Crucial for this purpose are: high level of the geological recognition of the aquifers, occurrence of thick reservoir rocks, high water discharge, relatively high temperatures, particularly in the Lower Jurassic aquifer, and relatively low costs of drilling the production and injection wells. The Lower Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous water-bearing layers are represented by sandstone complexes with very good reservoir properties. This is favourable for high water discharge, which has beneficial influence on economical justification of construction of geothermal plants. The above findings have been confirmed by the so-far geothermal investments, among others the geothermal plants in Pyrzyce and Stargard Szczeciński, which utilize geothermal waters from the Lower Jurassic aquifer. Other plants, located in Uniejów and Mszczonów, central Poland, utilize waters from the Lower Cretaceous aquifer.

Opis:
The beginning of exploitation of the Lower Devonian sandstones on Barcza Hill, located in the Klonów Range in the central part of the Holy Cross Mountains, dates back to the first decade of the last century. Sandstones of the lower Emsian Barcza Beds, known in older literature as “placoderm sandstones” were mined here. By the time of World War II, there were seven mines that produced mainly paving stones and crushed stone. Three of them resumed work after the war: “Kopalnia Nowa”, “Byk” and “Przy Pomniku”. Unfavourable deposit conditions and competition of the neighbouring mining plants "Bukowa Góra” and "Wiśniówka” led to the abandonment of mining on Barcza Hill in the late 1950s. In 1984, the “Barcza” nature reserve was created, which included the two largest quarries: "Kopalnia Nowa”and "Byk”.

Opis:
Romanesque collegiate church in Opatów (south-eastern Poland) belongs to the best-preserved Early Mediaeval edifices in Poland. Its date of origin, founder, architects and history are still unclear despite numerous investigations carried out since the beginning of the 19 th century. It is clear that local sandstones were used in the construction of the impressive church. Present investigations resulted in the inventory of the stones used as a building material: their petrography, size of blocks and strange holes and striae on some of their surfaces. Dominant sandstones have different colours: white-greyish or grey-brownish. They are built of very fine-grained, well sorted quartz with siliceous-clayey binder. All sandstone blocks have similar heights (most frequent average 34–38 cm), but different lengths. Longer (up to 62 cm) are placed in the oldest parts of the edifice, shorter (up to 48 cm) form younger fragments and might have been reused after destruction of previous undefined buildups. The sandstones represent Lower Jurassic sediments exposed currently on the slopes of the Opatówka River valley in Podole, some 5 km NE of Opatów. Only a few sherry (reddish) sandstone blocks found in various parts of the walls are probably replacements during post-Romanesque reconstructions. They represent Lower Triassic sandstone from Lipowa, 3 km NE of Opatów. Lancetoidal grooves, 5–20 cm long, and hemispherical holes of 1–4 cm in diameter are apparently of anthropogenic origin (apotropaic marks); however, their purpose is unclear. It is supposed that the grooves are traces of tool sharpening or grinding, while the holes are places where sandy or dusty material was acquired for magical or medical purposes.

The aim of the study was to present the use of archival welllogs for quantitative determination of organic matter (TOC wt.% ). The study was conducted in the lower Palaeozoic rocks of the Baltic Basin and Podlasie-Lublin Basin as well as in the Carboniferous rocks of the Fore-Sudetic Homocline basement. In many wells, sonic logging has not been run at all or run to a limited extent. In such cases, a neural network method was used to estimate the interval time. Then, continuous analysis was carried out for quantitative determination of organic matter content (TOC) using the CARBOLOG method. Finally, well log interpretation was performed for six wells in the Podlasie-Lublin Basin, five wells in the Baltic Basin, and five wells in the Fore-Sudetic Homocline basement. This article presents examples of results obtained for two wells.

The main task of research was a quantitative and qualitative identification of rare earth elements within various Mesozoic sediments in the surroundings of the Holy Cross Mountains. Over 100 samples from archive boreholes, outcrops and mining waste were analysed using modern methods, like portable XRF, geochemical analysis (ICP-MS), electron microprobe and SEM. Results show enrichments of REE concentrations in sedimentary rock samples from the Niektań PIG-1 borehole (LREE up to 0.95%), Miedary outcrop (LREY up to 0.4%) and Lower Cretaceous phosphorites from mining waste in Chałupki and Annopol (LREE ~0.2%). Further investigation is strongly recommended in order to explain the distribution of REE in the study areas.

Petrographic types of sandstones belonging to the Baboš Quartzite Mb (Sinemurian) and the Waksmundzka Sandstone Mb (Sinemurian-Lotharingian) of the Med’odoly Sandstone Fm (Krina Unit, Fatricum) in the Kopy Sołtysie region were identified. In the literature, they were usually described as quartzites or quartzose sandstones, but in fact they represent quartz arenites or subarkose arenites. Their composition indicates that the source of clastic material was of a cratonic interior type or related to a recycled orogenic material rich in quartz. It is possible that the source was located in elevated parts of the Tatricum or Hronicum domains. Sedimentary features and facies context point to deepeningm of sedimentary environment from the shallower shelf (Baboš Quartzite Mb) to that of a deeper shelf (Waksmundzka Sandstone Mb).

Opis:
The stratigraphic subdivision of the Lower Triassic in the Polish Tatra Mountains is composed solely of units of Alpine origin set in variable configurations. Unification of the stratigraphic classification over a vast area situated between the Dolomites and the Tatra Mountains is partly an effect of its long lasting integration in one state and within the domain of German-speaking geologists. This subdivision has never been soundly applied to the Lower Triassic of the Tatra Mts. on either palaeontological or any other satisfying basis. It has also lost its ground in its type areas, where other stages of extra-European origin has since long been adopted. Hence, the Werfenian, Seisian, Campilian, as well as the Scythian and the Myophoria Beds need to be definitely removed from the stratigraphic nomenclature and replaced with lithostratigraphic subdivision. The lithostratigraphic units should be implemented within their natural limits, therefore the units that have so far been created in the Slovakian part of the Carpathians should be adopted as it is possible.

Lower Cretaceous
Carpathian Foreland
Peri-Tethys
Opis:
During the Early Cretaceous a central part of the Carpathian Foreland was situated in the Peri-Tethys area. That zone was located on the SW margin of the East European Craton and it was adjacent to the Tethys basins in the south. Impact of those both zoogeographic provinces (the Boreal Sea and the Tethys Ocean) is easily noticeable in assemblages of microfauna. Character of sedimentation in the Early Cretaceous basin of the Carpathian Foreland is connected mainly with changes of the sea-level as well as tectonic activity of this region. The stratigraphy and facies data are based on near two hundreds wells profiles. Detailed sedimentological profiles and photographic documentation of the Upper Jurassic and the Lower Cretaceous deposits from about 50 boreholes were done as well as micropalaeontological and microfacial studies of core samples. The presented work is an attempt of unification and formalization of lithostratigraphic units’ nomenclature. Two boreholes: Zagorzyce-7 andWiewiórka-4 were suggested as stratotype sections of distinguished formations. Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary is probably situated within limits of Ropczyce formation in this area. Three formations have been distinguished in the profile of Lower Cretaceous above Ropczyce formation: Zagorzyce limestone-marl formation (Berriasian age), Dębica marl and organodetritic limestone formation (Valanginian) andWiewiórka limestone formation (Late Valanginian-Hauterivian). The most marked erosion surface is recorded between Zagorzyce and Dębica formations. We suppose that hiatus including a large part of Lower Valanginian profile is connected with that erosion surface. It could be refered to a rapid fall of the sea-level in the Tethys Ocean, noticed inter alia in theWestern Carpathians and the Northern Calcareous Alps. The known existing thickness of the Lower Cretaceous sediments in the middle part of Carpathian Foreland (total of three formations: Zagorzyce fm., Dębica fm. andWiewiórka fm.) rises to 188 m in Zagorzyce-1 well.

New Lower Jurassic material of dinosaur tracks has been found in the coastal siliciclastic and fluvial deposits of the Holy Cross Mountains (HCMts.), Poland. Three poorly preserved specimens of small to medium-sized theropod dinosaur footprints, assigned to cf. Grallator isp. and cf. Anchisauripus isp.,were found in the Sinemurian deposits exposed in the Starachowice outcrop. Sixteen specimens of dinosaur tracks, referred to ichnotaxa cf. Grallator isp., Anchisauripus isp., cf. Kayentapus isp., cf. Moyenisauropus isp., Theropoda indet., and Dinosauria indet., have been found in the upper Hettangian deposits of the Przysucha Ore-Bearing Formation and the Lower Sinemurian Ostrowiec Formation exposed near Żarnów (Paszkowice and Żarnów sites) in the northwestern part of the HCMts. Dinosaur footprints (cf. Anchisauripus isp., cf. Kayentapus isp.; and cf. Moyenisauropus isp.) and non-dinosaur tracks were found at the Bielowice site, known also as Wólka Karwicka near Opoczno. Interesting large ornithischian footprint (cf. Moyenisauropus isp.) and small-medium theropod footprints (Anchisauripus isp.) were found in the Zagaje Formation of Chyby near Mniów. Ornithischian dinosaur tracks similar to Moyenisauropus were also found in Skłoby Formation at Szwarszowice near Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. The last finds reported herein, the well preserved specimens of Anomoepus, Anchisauripus, Eubrontes and Kayentapus-like footprints, came from the new tracksite of Szydłówek. Tracks made by large theropods (cf. Megalosauripus isp.) and sauropods were also found at this site. The material came from the strata representing a large barrier-lagoon/deltaic sequence. These new finds confirm that the barrier-lagoonal association of theropod dinosaurs of the Lower Jurassic of the HCMts. is characterised by dominance of small and medium-sized forms but contains also prints made by larger animals. The analysis of the Liassic ichnocenosis suggests that Anchisauripus was a facies-independent ichnotaxon. In the Lower Jurassic of Poland this ichnogenus was identified in the fluvial (aluvial-plain), deltaic (delta-plain), and barier-lagoonal deposits.

Detailed magnetostratigraphic investigations of the Tithonian–Berriasian strata, integrated with litho- and biostratigraphic observations were carried out within the Bobrowiec Unit of the Lower Sub-Tatric (Krina) Nappe in theWestern Tatra Mts. Amodification of the existing lithostratigraphic scheme is proposed, splitting the Pieniny Limestone Formation (sensu Lefeld et al. 1985) into two formations, accordingly with lithostratigraphic subdivisions of the coeval deposits in some other parts of the Krina Nappe in Slovakia: the Jasenina Formation (includes Pośrednie Member sensu Pszczółkowski 1996, in its uppermost part) and the Osnica Formation (Osnica Member sensu Pszczółkowski 1996). The Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary, as defined by calpionellids, falls within the lowermost part of the Osnica Fm. Magnetozones from CM20r (Lower/Upper Tithonian boundary) up to CM16n (Upper Berriasian) were identified. Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary is situated within the CM19n magnetozone, below the short reversed Brodno subzone. Magnetostratigraphic correlation of four sections revealed existence of some “gaps” which are interpreted as tectonic reductions, which have to be considered while calculating the sedimentation rate which, however, might be roughly estimated. Sedimentation was relatively slow within the Jasenina Formation (5–7 m/My), but accelerated within the Osnica Fm (mean value: 10–15 m/My) and in the investigated lower part of the Kościeliska Marl Fm (20–30 m/My). Presence of hematite correlates with low sedimentation rate.

Base metals (Cu, Zn and Pb) as the main resources of the Lower Silesian copper deposits have significantly been influenced by different enviromentalfactors. In this paper, changes in metal concentrations on the surface in relation to deeper layers of the sediments were examined. The concentration ofmetals in the whole sediment, and in selected grain fractions was studied. The contents of these metals in the soils of areas adjacent to the deposit are diverse and are in the range of: 3.0-1082.9 mg/kg Cu; 3.5-106.1 mg/kg Pb; 27.6-49.3 mg/kg Zn, and 1.33-23.0 mg/kg Ni in the old deposit district and Cu 0.91-1655.0 mg/kg Pb; 10.0-1792.0 mg/kg Zn; 3.38-1129.0 and 0.47-32.7 mg/kg Ni in the new deposit district.
