Opis:
The paper presents geological, ore-mineralogical and economic characteristics of the goldfields in the Western USA (California and Yukon) and Australia (Bendigo-Ballart and Kalgoorlie regions). Moreover, common geological features of these areas, which were the place of modern Gold Rushes from the second half of 19th c. to the beginning of 20th c. are also described. Thanks to discovery of gold, these inhabited areas became the land of promise for millions of people and gold production contributed to economy of the fast growing nations. The first period of Gold Rushes began in California (USA) and Bendigo-Ballart region in Victoria (Australia) in 1848 and 1851, respectively. Placer gold was discovered first in Cenozoic alluvial sediments and subsequently in auriferous quartz lodes, which were the source of detrital gold. The detrital sediments appeared extremely rich in gold nuggets. The biggest nuggets, ca. 65.2 and 24.5 kg in weight, have been found in Bendigo and California, respectively. Placer gold production during the Gold Rush in California from 1848 to 1864 is estimated at ca. 1300 Mg Au. Since 1850, prospectors begun to discover numerous gold-bearing quartz veins (Mother Lode system) along the Sierra Nevada in California. These auriferous lodes gave over 1100 Mg of gold. In Bendigo-Ballart goldfields about 480 Mg of gold was extracted from placers and 260 Mg goldfrom from auriferous quartz veins in the years 1851–1861. The second period of modern Gold Rushes took place again in America (Yukon) in 1896 and in the Western Australia (Kalgoorlie) in 1893. In Yukon, gold was mainly extracted from Cenozoic river’s gravels (> 311 Mg) and in Kargoorlie—mainly from auriferous quartz-carbonate lodes. Some of goldfields with auriferous lodes discovered in 19th c. are still in production. Best example is here the Kargoorlie deposit that became recently the 3rd largest world producer of gold (> 1600 Mg Au). Gold production from lodes in California, Bendigo-Ballart and Kalgoorlie is roughly estimated at > 4000 Mg. Gold-bearing lodes formed as results of migration of fluids of various origin and gold precipitation in the upper crust within post-collisional tectonic settings. These lodes belong to orogenic type of gold deposits hosted by greenstone schist belts in metamorphic terranes of various age. Primary gold is bound mostly by auriferous sulphides—arsenopyrite and pyrite and as native gold which infills fractures in quartz and breccias. In California, Yukon and Victoria, rich placers were formed in the Cenozoic during exhumation of metamorphic terranes hosting auriferous gold lodes.

Opis:
Seven prospective areas have been delineated for gold deposits of vein and metasomatic types in the Sudetes (Kłodzko–Złoty Stok, Southern Kaczawa Mountains and Rudawy Janowickie prospective areas), on the Fore-Sudetic Block (Wądroże Wielkie) and in the contact zone of the Małopolska Block with the Upper Silesia Block (Dolina Będkowska, Pilica and Mysłów prospective areas). In total they are covering ca. 285.5 km2, (ca.252 km2 in the Sudetes and ca. 22 km2 on the Fore-Sudetic Block). The prospective areas were recognized on the basis of current regulations, which defined marginal parameters of specific deposit and delineated its borders together with application of adequate quantitative Au deposit models supported by ore parameters from the old mining records. Total predicted/estimated gold resources (prognostic + prospective resources),which are depending on the applied parameters, are from ca. 9.4 Mg (for n = 16 ore bodies) to 21.5 Mg (for n = 64 o.b.). The auriferous ores of the vein and metasomatic types (blind bodies) are associated with the metamorphosed volcanic-sedimentary Paleozoic formation in Lower Silesia and with contact-metasomatic zones around Variscan granitoid intrusions in southern Poland. The greatest estimated Au resources were recognized in the following areas: K³odzko–Z³oty Stok – ca. 6.3 Mg Au (for n = 7 o.b. – skarns, veins and beresites), Southern Kaczawa Mountains – ca. 4.8 Mg Au (for n = 15 o.b.) and Rudawy Janowickie – ca. 4.5 Mg Au (for n = 20 o.b. of vein and/or skarn types). In the contact zone of the Małopolska Block with the Upper Silesia Block the prospective areas are associated with the marginal zones (epithermal Au veins) around the granitoid/porphyry-related mineralization of the Mo-Cu-W type. The limited ore prospecting causes difficulties in estimation of Au resources in that area. The available data has allowed for a rough estimation of Au resources from ca. 1 to 3.5 Mg (for n = 5–21 o.b.). In most of the recognized Au prospective areas, auriferous mineralization is in paragenetic association with refractory gold sulfides and only sporadically appears as native gold or electrum mineralization (mainly in quartz veins). A new stage of gold prospection is highly recommended especially within the abandoned gold mining areas in the Sudetes. An application of modern geophysics (VLF and IP) followed by shallow drillings should bring new discoveries of gold deposits. In the report, environmental and spatial conflicts have also been pointed out within the specific gold prospective areas in relation to the presence of National Parks, NATURE 2000 areas, underground water reservoirs, etc.

The demandfor important raw materials for the Chinese economy achieved the scale about the half of the world's demand. Investment decisions taken in this matter enable a complete identification of mineral deposits, which is significant for both domestic and foreign investments. Geological studies and prospecting for useful ore mineral deposits have been conducted by special research institutions that prepare information about their reserves and output profitability. The University of Geological Studies in Beijing, with about 40,000 students, plays a key role in this activity. For example, a development of both reforms in extracting bituminous coal and gold deposits was discussed.

Opis:
The abandoned Klecza–Radomice gold mining area in the Kaczawskie Mountains is prospective for new occurrences of vein-type gold deposits. Research of sulphide ore samples from old mining wastes confirmed a rich gold abundance in this area. Chemical bulk-rock analyses proved a high content of gold (up to 60 ppm Au) and a common occurrence of microscopic gold (mainly electrum). The application of geophysical VLF surveys showed a number of linear anomalies indicating the possibility of the emergence of new ore veins between the areas of former mining exploitation. This area is very promising for gold prospecting and should be the subject of further geophysical research using the induced polarization method (IP), and verified by shallow prospecting drillings. Execution of this type of comprehensive exploration and research work would open a completely new stage of prospecting for primary gold deposits in the Sudetes.

Opis:
The paper presents the plight of KGHM Polska Miedź SA due to by the fall in copper prices on global stock markets. It has been noted that these prices apply to smelting copper. Meanwhile, the copper is in increasing quantities supplied to China in the form of concentrates. This causes a drop in prices of smelting copper which becomes less popular. Statistics since 2012 have recorded a permanent surplus of consumption over production of this metal. Therefore, the price of smelting copper will probably be at low level over the next years. It poses a threat for the future existence of the company. The exploitation of new deposits is conducted at a depth of below 1200 m. The rock temperature is about 55°C, which creates technical and financial problems. Mining work is carried out along the dip of the deposit at increasingly greater depths. In this direction, 10 km away, there is the “Wilków” natural gas field. It is proposed to undertake diversification of mining activities. Gold mining seems to be the prospective activity. Its economic concentrations occur in the mines of the KGHM, in the Lower Silesia region and abroad. Likewise, the company can achieve positive effects in investments related to the mining of diamonds.

Opis:
In NW Spain, on the border of Galicia, Asturias and Castile and Leon, in the Rio Sil River, the exploitation of gold placer deposits tooks place. Gold from alluvium was exploited by the Celts, but the Romans developed large-scale exploitation. The paper describes the attractive landscape, which is a relict ofa Roman gold mine. This mine was probably the largest in the Roman Empire. Gold occurs in the Neogene alluvium (~20 Ma years). The deposit is probably a weathering product of gold-bearing quartz veins. Three deposit series have been distinguished. They are composed of conglomerates with intercalations of finer-grained material - sand and clay. The top series, Las Medulas, has the thickness of >100 m, the middle series, Santalla, has the thickness of 0-30 m, and the most gold-bearing (20-100 mg/m3, at the base even 60-300 mg/m3) and intensely red gangue Orellan series found at the base is 0-25 m thick. The basement is represented by Devonian and Silurian limestones, shales and quartzites, Ordovician limestones, dolomites and shales, and Cambrian quartzites with slates at the top. The deposit is cut by numerous faults, which form blocks, and are the cause of variations in the level of the deposit series. The mining technique used by the Romans is also characterized. In the mine, where mining works were carried out on the surface of1228 ha, about 1626 tons of gold were exploited during the periodfrom ~25 BC to the early third century AD,. A technique ofruina montium was usedfor gold exploitation. It consists of drilling in excavations ofpoorly compacted rocks - tunnels, adits, shafts (up to a depth of 100 m). Through these excavations, the waterfallingfrom above was transferred. Water under pressure has burst and washed out the deposit. Presently, the remains of the Las Medulas deposit series are represented by the characteristic red rocks, which are poorly compacted. They create morphology of the mining landscape, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Opis:
In the shadow of discoveries of large deposits of mineral resources in Poland after World War II, intensive exploration works were carried out, but the results of this research did not bring such spectacular effects. Exploration of Zn-Pb deposits conducted in the vicinity of historic deposits of Tarnowskie Góry and Bytom led to documentation of the Zawiercie, Goluchowice and Marciszów deposits. With some successes, exploration works of metal ore deposits in Paleozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks of the NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were carried out. In this area, the Myszków Mo-W-Cu mineral deposit was confirmed, representing the porphyry copper genetic type. Moreover, in the area of Mrzyglód, the promising mineralization zone was found, requiring further geological research. The exploration of uranium and rare earth element ores did not lead to documentation of the deposits, nevertheless they made it possible to recognize all geological structures in Poland in terms of the possibility of occurrence of ore deposit occurrence of these metals. The prospecting works for these goals was carried out with a relatively small scale and were limited of the Sudetes, where exploitation took place on a fairly large scale in the past (Zloty Stok, Radzimowice, Klecza-Radomice, Wądroże Wielkie). The gold concentration occurring in the Zechstein Kupferschiefer formation and the porphyry copper mineralisation in NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were also studied. The PGI participated in the exploration of mineral resources in marine areas, where besides the hydrocarbon exploration in the Polish economic zone, research on the Baltic polymetallic nodules was carried out, and within the INTEROCEANMETAL consortium the raw material potential of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific was studied.
