Opis:
In order to determine the lithological complexes and to evaluate the prospective shale/tight gas zones, analysis of well data and a multi-well correlation have been performed. Over 30 wells were used for the analysis. Lithostratigraphic units have been verified and correlated in the wells. In some of them, TOC (Total Organic Carbon), effective porosity and lithological profiles have been determined after calibration with the laboratory analysis performed on core samples. Vast majority of the gathered data were visualized in 10 correlation lines.

Opis:
Unconventional gas by definition is economically less profitable and more difficult to extract then conventional gas. However, gradual depletion of conventional gas fields as well as large resources of unconventional gas make the latter an attractive target. Coalbed methane (CBM), tight gas and shale gas have been successfully developed in the US over the past two decades. Shale gas production has grown at the fastest pace in recent years and reached over 2 tcf in 2008, which is 6-fold increase since 1998. Key to success of unconventional gas development was Noncoventional Fuels Tax Credit introduced by the US government in 1980. This initial production growth of unconventional gas and shale gas in particular, was later sustained by the development of horizontal drilling and fracture stimulation technologies, economy of scale and increasing gas prices. Economics of producing shale gas is marked by bigger resource potential and, at the same time, lower production rates and higher drilling costs as compared to conventional gas, which entails adopting cautious investment strategies. Shale gas exploration strategies are also different from those of conventional gas and, initially, require an extensive source rock analysis and a big land position to identify "sweet spots". Shale gas exploration in Poland is in its infancy, being focused on the Silurian-Ordovician shale formation which is poorly explored and thus poses a significant exploration risk. Therefore, exploration companies have used a cautious approach which is reflected in planning of the concession activities divided in a few phases, with each successive phase contingent on the positive results of the preceding one. These phases include: existing data analysis, seismic, drilling an exploratory well with extensive core analyses prior to a pilot testing program using horizontal wells. On a technical level of shale gas exploration, the integration of many disciplines is required for commercial success. Potential barriers to shale gas exploration in Poland have been identified such as: regulations which are in favor of the domestic service companies impeding competition, changeable and unclear environmental protection regulations, as well as insufficient liberalization of the domestic gas market.

Opis:
The paper summarizes information on gas resources in Poland, especially unconventionals. There are proven, though not very large, resources of conventional hydrocarbons and coalbed methane – the inventory is carried out by Polish Geological Survey. Recently undiscovered shale gas and tight gas resources have been assessed by Polish Geological Survey and other organizations. In previous decade undiscovered coal bed methane resources have been estimated as well. There were a number of studies on undiscovered conventional gas resources carried out in previous decades providing ever higher estimations of the undiscovered gas potential. These studies were also targeted on an intermediate category of gas resources – deep gas and/or tight gas resources in conventional traps. Putting all together, it seems the undiscovered potential of gas resources (both unconventional and conventional) in Poland is a quite impressive and various types of hydrocarbon resources coexist in respective hydrocarbon basins.

Opis:
In Germany there is no agreement among politicians and local government officials regarding the safety and economic sense of the exploration and production of shale gas. However Germany does not reject completely the need to invest in the development of this sector. The political parties speak cautiously about the hydraulic fracturing, because they do not want to lose their voters. However, in a country which is in 70% dependent on the import of natural resources, the industry interest in the search for alternatives to Russian gas and oil energy sources increases. It is no secret that after the withdrawal from nuclear power, the German economy has to change its energy profile. Currently, Germany increases the use of coal, but could it have economic sense? Because of green certificates and European trend to reduce the emission of CO2, the Germans do not depart from the investment in shale gas. It is confirmed by the publication of a draft of amending the acts in November 2014. However some part of German society expected much more strict rules, including a total ban on hydraulic fracturing. The German law should, mobilize the Polish Parliament (Sejm) to develop a comprehensive law regulating the mining and geological activity that is in line with EU law.

Opis:
This article hasbeen prepared based on the chapter devoted to research of petrophysical properties of shale and tight sandstones within the project: “Identification of prospective zones for unconventional hydrocarbon accumulations in Poland, stage I.” Petrophysical and mineralogical characterization of particular prospective complexes in the Baltic, Podlasie-Lublin basin and the Carboniferous basin of south-western Poland (Fore-Sudetic Homocline basement), is based on selected laboratory tests of rocks, performed by the Oil and Gas Institute – NRI in Kraków. These analyses included investigations of total porosity and effective porosity, helium porosity, total permeability, silica content, clay content and cumulative content of quartz, and feldspars and carbonates. For particular complexes mean values of individual parameters were calculated. Then, an assessment was made to find out whether they meet the established criteria and whether the results correlate with each other in the boreholes across each area.

Opis:
The detailed research of a gas mixture released from the thermal water, which is extracted from borehole KT-1 at Karpniki, showed the predominance of nitrogen (98.08% by volume) with subordinate Ar (1.52%) and He (0.32%) and trace amounts of CO2 (0.07%) and CH4 (0.01%). The 222Rn radionuclide is also dissolved in this water, showing an activity concentration of 245 Bq/dm3 at the outflow and 256 Bq/dm3 in the aquifer. A small value of the gas exponent (0.014), and also a value of the δ coefficient close to 1 (0.93) were calculated based on the dissolved Ar and N2 content in the water examined, as well as on concentrations of argon and nitrogen in water, assuming that atmospheric air is present above the water surface with a contemporary composition and under normal pressure. The data obtained indicate that these gases and additionally CO2 and CH4 are of atmospheric origin. These gases were either dissolved in rainwater, which infiltrated deep into the Karkonosze granite massif, orformed within the organic layer covering this exposed intrusion. This is evidenced by concentrations of these gases that can be comparable to their atmospheric equivalents. Helium is a radiogenic gas formed as a result of nuclear transformation of isotopes assigned to natural radioactive series. The radiogenic and also radioactive gas is represented by the 222Rn radioisotope which is released from reservoir rocks, in an amount of 5% of the atom poolforming in the reservoir rock, into thermal water that subsequently reaches borehole KT-1 from a distance of 34 m at most. The thermal paleoinfiltration water has been heated up as a result of the conduction, and the source of heat is the temperature of the rocks resulting from an average geothermal gradient of 2.96°C per 100 m. The results of the authors’research indicate that there are no traces of inflow of hotfluids (especially water) from the deeper layers of the crust or from the mantle. If the examined thermal water is considered as paleoinfiltration water, its static resources may be limited, non-renewable.

Opis:
The paper presents the first unconventional tight gas field discovered in tight low permeability (K > 0.1 mD) eolian sandstones in the Polish Upper Rotliegend Basin. The tight gas field has been found in area east of Poznań (Siekierki zone). In that area, reservoir eolian sandstones lost almost all permeability and partly porosity due to compaction and illitization processes. The origin of the gas trap was analyzed in many variants, from which one was selected as the most probable. It is assumed that main source for illite crystallization were Zechstein hypersaline brines rich in Ca, Na, K and SO4, which infiltrated the Rotliegend sandstones on tectonically uplifted block. The gas generation and migration were taking place at the same time as processes responsible for decrease in sandstone permeability have been ceasing. As a result, tight gas field from the Siekierki zone can be defined as an unconventional gas field occurring in conventional structural trap. It is expected that tight gas fields could also originate in deeper parts of the Polish Rotliegend Basin but under conditions of BCGS (Basin-Centered Gas System). Gas fields originating under this system are without classic seal and its capacity can be significantly bigger than those of conventional gas fields. The type of organic matter occurring in mature Carboniferous rocks was determining composition of gas formed at gas generation phase. It also affected the chemical content of infiltrating fluids and, in this way, had significant influence on the course of diagenetic processes. In the fault zones, diagenetic cements formed impermeable barriers which separate conventional and unconventional gas fields, as well as barriers separating individual parts of these fields. Such compartmentalization was surely important for origin of the tight gas reservoirs in the Polish Upper Rotliegend Basin.

Developing intensively since the beginning of XXI century industry related to unconventional hydrocarbon deposits (shale gas, tight gas, shale oil) requires a comprehensive look on environmental issues arising from the commonly used technology. Because of the hydrauling fracturing process the groundwater management issues are the most important. The analysis requires both aspects of the project water needs, water circulation system in the process, define the sources of water, as well as issues related to the protection of surface and groundwater in the vicinity of the works. In light of the current currently at the European debate about the safe use of unconventional hydrocarbons need for integrated water management is particularly important.

In Poland, the activity of entities using the environment, including entities conducting shale gas exploration, is subject to the control of the Inspection of Environmental Protection. The Inspection bodies ensure supervision over the geological operations and their impact on the environment already at an early stage, when the first preparatory and organisational work is executed. In order to harmonise control principles, the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection has developed "Guidelines for control of concession holders conducting activities consisting in shale gas exploration and extraction by the Inspection of Environmental Protection". The former experience from the control within this scope show proper preparation of the concession holders to the process of exploration and examination in line with the conditions set out in the concessions. Moreover, no cases of serious damage have been found, and no offences against the environment related directly to the exploration process have been identified.

Opis:
Withinaframe of the research project on Rotliegend tight gas, a data base comprising 760 full sets of reservoir and permeability parameters was created. Data from 55 wells were collected from interval of 1650-5003 m. The obtained results showed presence of clastic reservoirs sufficient for formation of "tight gas" type deposits in each of the analyzed wells. In most of the wells, reservoir rock series with non-zero permeability were detected. Parameters of pore space suggest the major role of compaction processes in pore space evolution, except for some areas where cementation processes were predominating. A high-permeability anomaly characterizing a separate group of eolian sandstones from the depths of over 4000 m anomaly may be explained as due to presence of pseudo- and micro-fractures.
