Opis:
An issue of mean residence time (MRT) evaluation, i.e. the period of time from rainfall until drainage of groundwater by rivers (Danube River Basin, Vistula River Basin and Narew River Basin), is discussed Asimple method of evaluating the groundwater MRT for the Danube River Basin based on tritium data is introduced. It has been confirmed that the historical tritium level in the rivers, being higher than in precipitation, has its end and is reversed, opening a new pathway in understanding the surface-groundwater interaction and specifically in evaluating MRT of groundwater. The authors have defined a separate notification for mean residence time of the whole water in the basin (τ) and mean residence time for groundwater in the basin (τwp). Based on the tritium study the obtained τ values are 6.5 and 5.7 years for the Vistula River Basin (VRB) and the Narew River Basin (NRB), respectively. In turn, the obtained τwp values are 8.0 and 6.0 years, respectively. NRB is a lowland plain and a morphologically, geologically and hydrogeologically uniform basin. The obtained τ wp of groundwater is thus representative for the whole basin. Instead inmorphologically non uniform VRB basin groundwater τwp is a generalized value,i.e.averaged over contributed parts of the basin.

Rocks from the Mo-1 well from the Barnówko-Mostno-Buszewo (BMB) oil and gas field have been studied aiming at constructive results for application in exploration for oil and gas. The study focuses on carbonate deposits from the Main Dolomite horizon, commonly diagenetically altered, where the pore space has been filled by dolomite and anhydrite. Standard petrological analysis was conducted, wide fluid inclusion analyses performed and geochemical character of bitumen determined. Based on microscopic fluorescence studies, three types of fluid inclusions have been distinguished in the vertical column of the well: one-phase non-fluorescent (methane), two-phase non-fluorescent (brine), and two-phase fluorescent inclusions (oil). These three types, further studied microthermometrically, display characteristics of fluid fillings present in the basin and closed as the inclusions in minerals.

Opis:
Polish bituminous coal basins are associated exclusively with Carboniferous deposits, differing in origin and geological structure. This paper presents only a short review of papers mainly of Polish authors on the geological structure, stratigraphy of coal-bearing deposits, quality of coal, as well as selected aspects of economic geology of three Polish bituminous coal basins: the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB), Lower Silesian Coal Basin (LSCB) and Lublin Coal Basin (LCB). The paper provides also an overview on the investigations made on the interpretations of the origin of Polish coal deposits over the last 20 years with an emphasis on coal facies studies. The paper content is related to the conference entitled "Polish Coal” of the 3 rd Polish Geological Congress, which is planned in Wroclaw in September 2016. This conference covers a broad spectrum of issues such as: geology of coal basins and coal deposits, coal-bed methane, economic geology, petrology and geochemistry of coal, as well as origin, coalification and quality of coal.

Opis:
Geological studies of the Polish coal basins - namely the Upper Silesian Basin, the Lower Silesian Basin and the Lublin Basin - are diverse due to the differences in the extent of exploration and coal mining activities, as well as the complicated political history of each basin. This paper presents a review of the most important geological works performed after World War II on the territory of Poland. The studies conducted by the Polish Geological Institute (PGI) were of critical importance, especially those which were concentrated on the geology and stratigraphy of Carboniferous strata. It should be emphasized that the PGI made a great contribution to the discovery and subsequent evaluation of coal resources in the Lublin Coal Basin. Equally important are exploration endeavors and coal resource evaluation conducted by the PGI in the other two Polish coal basins. In addition, the PGI initiated and performed investigations of coalbed methane.

The objective of this paper is to present the advantages and problems related to the application of a multi-layer model in hydrogeological investigations, exemplified by the Main Groundwater Basin No. 338. The main aquifer in this basin is Neogene, but Quaternary, Cretaceous and Palaeozoic-Proterozic aquifers have also been identified there. Due to the presence of numerous permeable layers, separated by impermeable ones of irregular distribution in the Neogene aquifer, 27 model layers have been distinguished, including 10 water-bearing horizons. A large number of model blocks caused the increase of the computational time, and a large number of layers have lengthened the calibration time of the model. However, anthropogenic or geologic threats to multi-layer structures have justified such a large number of layers, enabling the water balance for the selected part of the basin orfor the selected depth intervals with groundwater of good or bad status.

Opis:
Progress in geological, geophysical and drilling sciences during the past 30 years has introduced to hydrocarbon exploration the concept of petroleum system, understood as an analysis of the factors necessary forformation and preservation of oil and natural gas deposits. Thefinal evaluation ofpetroleum system is the product of allfactors involved in the formation of hydrocarbon accumulations, which must be preserved proper chronology of events in the geological space. Such interdependences build often synergistic or antagonistic configurations. These configurations are called critical elements of the petroleum system. Reliable and comprehensive analysis of critical elements ofpetroleum system in sedimentary basins in Poland lets identify potential new areas of hydrocarbon exploration. In this context, a particularly promising area is the petroleum system of the Pita Claystone Formation (central part of the Polish Rotliegend Basin) and deep “Carpathians” with their palaeo-mesozoic basement and deeper part of the Carpathian Foredeep.

The scheme in which the Carpathians, Carpathian Foredeep and Polish Lowland are distinguished as the hydrocarbon prospective zones was used hitherto in Poland. Good geological diagnosis of Poland area enables to distinguish the petroleum provinces in terms of basin analysis (methodology). This procedure are based on an integration of multidisciplinary geological and geophysical data with into a petroleum play concept. Results of drillings and petroleum play procedures allow to predict boundaries of petroleum provinces. Effects of basin analysis with regards to the stratigraphy of hydrocarbon-bearing areas are presented in Figure 1. All these prospective areas (Fig. 1) have been matched into five independent units (Fig. 2) which could be defined as following petroleum provinces: Pomerania, Wielkopolska, Ma3opolska, Lublin and Gdansk. These petroleum provinces are only the parts of sedimentary basins the individual development of which enabled generation, migration and preservation of hydrocarbons. Location of the above mentioned petroleum provinces is also brightly reflected on the map of crustal consolidation (Fig. 3): every province in Poland has its own individual geologic history.

Upper Silesian Coal Basin
Opis:
Polish Geological Institute as a member of TerraFirma Consortium obtained PSInSAR dataset for the Sosnowiec area (Upper Silesian Coal Basin - USCB) in mid-March 2004 and in spring 2006. The area of dataset covers northeastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Processing of the data has covered scenes both ERS-1, ERS-2 registered between 1992 and 2006. The PSInSAR data were processed by TeleRilevamento Europa. Interpretation of the Sosnowiec scene has covered analysis of the multi-thematic data, including geostatistics, land use, mining, geology and seismicity. The most interesting results obtained in the Sosnowiec area are as follows: the indicated subsidence values in the period from 1992 to 2003 vary between-39.63 mm to +25.12 mm. These values show tendencies of the slow ground motion with a very high accuracy. Preliminary interpretation of the PSInSAR data of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin indicated strong correlation between the recorded PS negative values and structural pattern of the Carboniferous strata. Clearly visible concentration of negative values is also noted at footwalls and hanging walls of the Będzin and Kłodnica regional faults. Undoubtedly, the two mentioned faults of the Variscan origin were rejuvenated during the Alpine Orogeny (Triassic deposits were found in the hanging walls of the faults). The presence of the ground motion along its strike, can suggest neotectonic character of these faults. Linear anomalies oriented WNW-ESE were formed by changing values of the ground motions which are also parallel to the productive Carboniferous deposits forming the coal basin such as the Mudstone Series, Paralic Series and Upper Silesian Sandstone Series. The explanation of these phenomena (genesis and mechanisms) needs further studies. There is an evident correlation between linear negative anomalies and induced seismicity, mainly in the vicinity of the Kłodnica fault. Interpretation of slow ground motions registered by PSInSAR method from the USCB indicates also probably prolongation of the Będzin fault in northwest direction and subsidence of the Upper Silesian Sandstone Series compared to the Mudstone Series and Paralic Series.

Opis:
In western and central parts of the Podlasie-Lublin Basin, Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian mixed siliciclastic-carbonate section is dominated by fine-grained sediments (claystones, mudstones), which are passing into more carbonaceous ones towards the east. In this region, subsidence was controlled by flexural bending of the East European Craton margin. Sedimentological analysis of drill cores revealed that deposition of those fine-grained sediments originated from suspension and traction currents. Amount of oxygen plays important role in the rock record (Fig. 1) whereas occurrence of pyrite is significant for determinations of sedimentary conditionsion, also in terms of sea level changes (Fig. 2). The rocks display abundant sedimentological structures such as current ripples, wave ripples, hummocky cross-stratification (HCS), graded beds, water escape structures, soft sediment deformation and scours (Fig. 3). The rocks are also characterized by predominance of wave ripples, common scours, graded beds and soft sediment deformations whereas current ripples, water escape structures and HCS are rather rare. The most frequent of the ichnofacies elements include unlined, rarely branched Planolites, which represent Scolithos, Cruziana and Zoophycus ichnofacies. The size of elements of Planolites ichnofacies appears dependent on environmental conditions and ranges from 0.5 mm to 15 mm. Chondrites, Anconichnus, Helminthopsis and Teichichnus, very important environment indicators, are present but not that common (Fig. 4). Textural analyses along with the records of diagenetic features made it possible to distinguish a succession of stratigraphic parasequences (Fig. 5). Early carbonate cementation appeared important, especially in the case of suble or invisible changes in grain size. On the basis of the obtained results, depositional environment of fined-grained sediments in the Podlasie-Lublin Basin was interpreted as a wave-dominated shelf with turbidite episodes. Detailed sedimentological observations are crucial for definiting facies types and prediction of their distribution, but also for tracing the most organic-rich units in the sedimentological profile, as the basic in terms of gas shale prospects. Apparently monotonous fine-grained sediments (claystones and mudstones) are shown to be in fact miscellaneous.

The intramontane basin of Jelenia Góra in the West Sudetes (SW Poland) is located adjacent to the Karkonosze Mountains, recently proclaimed as a national geopark. Although formally not included into the geopark, geological history and geomorphology allow to consider the basin as a logical complement of the Karkonosze Geopark. More than 20 easily accessible localities are potential geosites, illustrating the history of magma emplacement, lithological and structural diversity of granite, Cenozoic volcanism, evolution of denudational granite relief, the history of Pleistocene inland glaciation and human - geoheritage interactions, which culminated in the development of landscape parks in the 19th century. Geosites in the Jelenia Góra Basin do not duplicate those in the Karkonosze Mountains, but tell different chaptersfrom the long-term geological evolution of the West Sudete.

Recognition and precise delimitation of landslide-affected areas, especially in the mountains, have been a challenge so far. New opportunities emerged after dissemination of high- resolution Digital Elevation Models generated by Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS), which are also used to processing and visualization of geological data. This paper touches the issue in both aspects mentioned above, and presents results of morphometric analysis of a landslide on the northern slope of the Drogosz hill within the Zawory Range, in the southern part of the Krzeszów Basin (Central Sudetes). Attempts ofreconstruction ofthe slip surface and estimation oftotal volume of the landslide colluvialfill were undertaken. Furthermore, differential maps were compiled. They were a basis for the spatial distribution of thickness evaluation. The Drogosz hill landslide seems to be strictly related to the geological structure of the research area. The Zawory Range is composed of Upper Cretaceous, Lower Triassic (Buntsandstein) and Permian (Rotliegendes) rocks. Lack of recognition of landslide phenomena was probably the main reason of misleading interpretations of the Krzeszów area geology. The paper also provides comments on the existing concepts of the geological structure of the Krzeszów Basin, especially of the Łączna Anticline.

Opis:
In the Lublin region Carboniferous sandstones are represented by subarkosic, quartz and sublithic, occasionally arkosic arenites and wackes. These rocks are characterized by porosity (primary and secondary) ranging from 0 to 22.43% and permeability from 0 to over 1000 mD. Two diagenetic processes, that is compaction and cementation, were primarily responsible for reduction of porosity in these sandstones. The compaction decreased porosity at about 50%, while the cementation at 30%. Quartz, kaolinite and carbonates and locally fibrous illite are the most common cements here. Dissolution is also important as a diagenetic process responsible for development of secondary porosity. Good porosity of the bulk of Carboniferous sandstones is due to precipitation of early overgrowth cements (quartz, Fe-chlorite and siderite), which stopped the mechanical compaction, and dissolution of feldspar grains and authigenic quartz leading to origin of secondary porosity. The processes of mechanical compaction and advanced quartz and carbonate cementation (mainly of the ankerite and Fe-calcite type) as well as crystallization of fibrous illite were the major factors responsible for reduction of porosity in some sandstones. The results of the studies on pore space indicate good reservoir properties of sandstones of the Lublin and Dęblin formations as well as some parts of the Terebin formation. The sandstones from the Huczwa formation and a part of the Terebin formation belong to rocks characterized by low petrophysical parameters. Comparisons of sandstones formed in different environments have shown that best reservoir conditions are displayed by these formed in river channel and delta bottom ennvironments. During diagenesis, the Carboniferous deposits remained under influence of the maximum temperature of about 120oC, but locally the temperatures could have been even higher. Maximum temperatures were reached by the Carboniferous deposits at the end of Carboniferous whereas diagenetic proccesses were active until early Permian. The results of studies on diagenesis of these rocks, projected onto the thermal-erosional model, point to the Variscan overheating.
