Opis:
This paper summarizes four years of geological research in the Pomerania Bay and Oder Bank. As a result of the synthesis of new and archival data,we have compiled maps, cross-sections and models depicting the geological structure of the Quaternary and its basement, and the relief of structural surfaces. Two main seismostratigraphic sedimentary complexes are distinguished. The first corresponds to Pleistocene glacial and interstadial deposits. The second one is composed of Late Glacial and Holocene lacustrine-swamp and marine sediments. The outline of geochemical condition of the sea bottom is also presented. The content of the elements is always below the acceptable concentration and the origin of the elements is geogenic. Special attention has been given to mineral resources on the bottom surface and to documenting deposits of sand containing heavy minerals. The characterization of areas with sands suitable for beach nourishment and valorization of deposits and prospective areas have also been of great importance. The history of the development of the geological structure and palaeogeography of the area is the summary of the results.

Opis:
The research task Geological integrated coastal zone mapping concerns the recognition and visualization of the geological structure of the Polish coastal zone, enriched with the modelling of erosion-accumulation processes, including prediction of changes in the position of the shoreline and identification of geohazards. It has been running since 2012 and implements multi-instrumental research methods. To date, a total length of about 155 km of the Polish coastal zone has been studied in an area of about 621 km 2 . The main results of the work are presented in the form of maps (e.g., lithogenetic, hydrogeological, geohazard), models (e.g., morpho-geological, hydrodynamic, predictive) and specialized analyses (e.g., morphodynamical, slope stability). In general, the work carried out is done for a utilitarian purpose, i.e. aimed at the practical use of environmental information. According to the standards of the Polish Geological Survey, most of the geological data acquired can be geoprocessed.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the temperature conditions in the sediment during the diagenesis history of Pennsylvanian sandstones drilled in three deep boreholes in the Baltic Sea. These sandstones are represented by quartz and sublithic arenites and wackes, cemented by matrix and autigenic minerals. Among the autigenic minerals: quartz, clay minerals (kaolinite, dickite, illite) and carbonates (calcite, dolomite, ankerite) are the temperature indicators. The presence of dickite in the sediments indicates a temperature of about 120°C. Quartz and carbonate crystallization temperatures, based on the analysis of fluid inclusions, are estimated to be in the range of 70-180°C. The K/Ar age of the fibrous illite thatforms at the final stage of diagenesis (above 100° C), was determined at 262 ±2 to 247 ±4 My, i.e. from the Middle Permian to the Early Triassic. It determines a length of the post-deposition period, when the deposits were permeable for pore fluids.

During transportfrom the field to the sea nitrogen undergoes natural reduction resulted mainly from denitrification, but with large spatial variations. In the present study, a map for spatially variable nitrate reduction in groundwater in the area of Poland is presented. The map was preparing following 3 steps: (i) identification of major hydrogeological units (Lowland and Mountain-Upland Provinces); (ii) identification of dominating lithology with use lithotypes classifications from Groundwater Vulnerability Map of Poland in scale 1 : 500 000; (iii) estimation of the influence of artificial drainage. The resulted distribution of nitrate reduction coefficient reveals a distinct bimodality related to the sharp contrast in hydrogeology between the two provinces.

Opis:
Fresh water accumulated beneath the sea floor may flow through sediments into the sea water. This process, opposite to infiltration, is called Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD). The Southern Baltic Sea coastal zone represents an interesting object of study because its bottom deposits show seepages of fresh groundwater. The study involved Puck Bay and the adjacent coastal belt of the Kashubian Coast plateau. Research of potential outflows of fresh groundwater was done through a thermal imaging of the study area. An articulate thermal anomaly allowed predetermining the location of research points. Groundwater outflows in the seabed were confirmed by measurements of chloride content and electrical conductivity of water samples. The paper presents two new devices: a filtrometer that enables measurement of water filtration intensity during drainage, and a gradientmeter that measures the hydraulic gradient. The use of both devices allows determination of the in situ hydraulic conductivity. Results of the research have shown relationships between fresh groundwater and the sea-bottom sediments.

Opis:
Studies on Baltic nodules have been undertaken since the1920s. In the 1970sand 1980s, the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute conducted researches on the bottom sediments of the Baltic Sea, which allowed identifying the regions of occurrence of Fe-Mn nodules in the southern part of the Baltic Sea (Mojski, 1989-1994). Nodules from the Polish Baltic Sea Zone are the least studied element of the marine environment. So far, there is a lack of information on environmental-geological conditions of formation and occurrence of nodules, their metal resources and deposit potential. The Fe-Mn nodules may be a valuable source of information on the contamination of the Baltic Sea water and bottom sediments. In cooperation between the Institute of Oceanography of the University ofGdañsk and the Polish Geological Institute-NRI, two research cruises were carried out in August and September 2020 on a 5 X 5 km testing ground in the Gotland-Gdańsk Threshold region. The seabed surface was profiled using multibeam echo sounders and a side-scan sonar. A hundred samples of Fe-Mn nodules, 25 samples of surface sediments associated with the nodules, and25 samples of clay rocks underlain by marine sediments were collected. The extensive documentary material will enable, for the first time, to estimate the nodule resources and determine the regularity of their occurrence.

Opis:
The article is an overview of 50 years of Marine Geology Branch (MBG) activity in the field of geological cartography in Polish maritime areas. As a result of successive recognition of the geological structure of the Cenozoic, sheets of the Geological Map of the Baltic Sea Bottom at a scale of1 : 200,000 had been published by 1994, followed by a geological map without Quaternary deposits. The summary of the stage of over 25 years of intense research was the Geological Atlas of the Southern Baltic. The achievements of the Marine Geology Branch also include geochemical atlases, geo-environmental maps, and coastal zone maps created on the basis of detailed mapping works. The successively expanded geological database enables the creation of many map products for the needs of specific users. Various studies related to marine geological cartography, and extensive national and international cooperation have significantly contributed to the development of the scientific staff of the Marine Geology Branch.

Opis:
The accomplishment of the vision of exploration and in particular of exploitation of shale oil and shale gas in a perspective of a few years’time seems to be unrealistic. Interest in unconventional deposits occurs amongst small entities seeking a satisfactory return on their investments and becoming pioneers like George P. Mitchell 40 years ago. It is not only a result of high costs or lack of a sufficient technology but most notably the result of lack of an involvement of the key players in the global market. European companies, for instance, are closer to exploration of the new shale gas deposits onshore, although some of them declare to make an offshore research too. While Poland is today’s leader of shale gas exploration on the continent, it is also facing a problem of the lack of appropriate technologies of working at sea and country’s shales in general. In addition, the potential resources from the Baltic Sea bed, belonging to the Lower Paleozoic formations (Ordovician–Silurian) in the Baltic Basin, characterized by a good performance and shallower location than onshore deposits, are over four times more expensive to explore than on the land, which causes that there is no reason for recognizing them as economically recoverable resources. Therefore, any exploration of gas and oil from unconventional deposits in the Baltic Sea will have no economic justification within the next few years, but should only be considered as research.

This paper presents structural data and regional correlations based on drill cores from 8 boreholes (B2-1/80, B3-1/81, B4-1/81, B6-1/82, B6-2/85, B7-1/91, B16-1/85 and B21-1/95) penetrating Precambrian crystalline rocks in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea. The crystalline rocks from the ftom these boreholes were compared to cores from several wells in Eastern Pomerania, and the Kashubian and Warmia regions and above all with the Mesoproterozoic granitoids and metamorphic rocks of Bornholm and Southern Sweden. The pre-existing basement map of the Southern Baltic, showing Palaeoproterozoic or even Archaean granitoid massifs and narrow north-south fold belts is questioned. Instead, in the present interpretation, the studied area of the Polish part of the Southern Baltic Sea is underlain by a fragment of the Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.47–1.43 Ga) Danopolonian („Hallandian”) orogeny, comprising mainly regional-scale ductile shear zones, which, striking probably in W–E to WNW–ESE directions, are characterized by the predominance of a thrust to transpressional strain regime with tectonic transport top-to-the S or SSW. The structural kinematic and lithological interpretations of these shear zones are based on comparison with the other parts of the East European Craton that are exposed in Bornholm and the Blekinge and Skne regions in Southern Sweden.

Authors analyze the resistance of shear and compression of the Polish Baltic soils on the depth of 10 and 20 m below the sea bottom. On the basis of selected mechanical properties of the Polish Baltic soils have been characterized the devided geological-engineering units on the depth of 10 and 20 m below the sea bottom. These characteristics concern the engineering- geological division of the sea bottom are founded on the detailed analyses of the geological maps of the Baltic Sea bottom in scale of 1: 200 000 and on the geological interpretation of seismoacoustic investigations which were executed in selected parts of the area of the Baltic Sea and also on the base of the results of detailed engineering-geological research of some fragments of the sea bottom and the coastal zone in the area of western Pomerania. On this base, the authors present the engineering-geological units of the Polish Baltic soils on the depth of 10 and 20 m below the sea bottom. There were taken into account certain geological criteria such as a lithological type, genesis and age of deposits and also geotechnical criteria beside of resistane of shear (f) and resistance of compression (Rc), the next properties such as a index of density (ID ), index of liquidity (IL ), angle of internal friction (), cohesion (c).
