    The article refers to the 350th anniversary of the death of an outstanding educator, philosopher, theolo¬gian and politician Jan Amos Comenius who was active in the years 1628-1656, mainly in Leszno. This extremely versatile researcher also showed interest in natural science. Although he was not a pioneer in this field, the number of his works, the number of editions, as well as numerous translations into foreign languages contributed to the popularization of natural sciences, including Earth sciences. Unfortunately, few geologists have come across his achievements in this field.

    By presenting Dr B.J. Szafarkiewicz, a well-known scientist of the second half of the 19th century, the present author set himself the goal of dealing with the view that Poles were not interested in natural sciences, and geological in particular, in the Grand Duchy of Poznań at that time. It was not allowed in the Prussian partition to found a university. Thus, there were no institutional and economic conditions for the development of geology. Only the establishment of the PTPN (Poznań Society of Friends of Learning) created a substitute for a scientific centre that also included mineralogical, palaeontological and geological sciences. However, except for R. May, no one had a geological background. Prominent representatives of other professions, suchas B.J. Szafarkiewicz and F. Chłapowski, and earth science enthusiasts tried to bring the benefits of studying and practicing geology to the society of Greater Poland. While F. Chłapowski is known and appreciated today, the memory of the pioneering, geological activity of B.J. Szafarkiewicz is becoming increasingly blurred.

    The article reminds of two important anniversaries related to May 7, 1919. On this day, the Polish Geological Institute in Warsaw and the University of the Piasts (later known as the University of Poznań and presently Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań) were founded. The history of the development of geological sciences in Poznań was also presented. It is worth emphasizing that initially three institutes in this field were established: Paleontological, Geological and Mineralogical Institute. In the one hundred-year history of geological sciences at the University of Poznań, five periods of geological research have been distinguished: 1) before World War II, 2) during the war, 3) in the years 1945–1952, 4) during 1953–1988 and 5) 1989 until the present day. The greatest successes were achieved by Poznań geologists at the end of the 1930s and after 1988, when the geological studies were reactivated as a master’s course.

    During 1919-1939 the most important role in the geological research on the Polish territory was played by the Polish Geological Institute. Despite many difficulties resulting from the lack of adequate financing, the PIG employees have achieved many successes regarding the discovery of new useful mineral deposits, as well as a better understanding of the geological structure of the country. The PIG skillfully combined the practical and scientific aspects of geological research during the interwar period.

    It is likely that the beginnings of geological museology in Poland should be associated with the collecting movement of all kinds of souvenirs and wonders of nature, often referred to as curiosities or antiquity. In 1775, Michal Mniszech proposed the creation of a national museum (Museum Polonicum). The article mentions all significant collectors of geological exhibits, including Anna Jabłonowska as one of the main figures in the beginnings of museology in Poland. The so-called public and academic and some school collections are described. The article also pays attention to social initiatives regarding financing of natural museums, including geological ones.

    The paper describes the achievements of the Earth Museum Society, referring mostly to the activities of S. Matkowski (1889-1962), especially in the interwar period. The importance and significance of his efforts to popularize geological sciences, including organizing the central geological museum (The Earth Museum), protection of geological collections, field work, and publishing activities are presented. The establishment of the Earth Museum Society in 1932 was to enable S. Matkowski to achieve these goals better and faster.

    The article refers to the ongoing discussion around the idea of geological heritage protection. In this context, the genesis, course and results of the activities of the Commission for Nature Conservation of the Polish Geological Institute, operating in 1926–1934, have been recalled. This commission, acting on the initiative of S. Małkowski, contributed to the recognition, implementation and dissemination of the idea of protection of geological features. It also made a significant contribution to the theoretical and practical achievements in this area. Due to many publications, the results of commission's activity were disseminated in the country and abroad. In 1928, the “Zabytki Przyrody Nieożywionej Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej” (Eng. “Monuments of Geological Features of the Republic of Poland”, Fr. “Monuments de la Nature Inanimée de la République Polonaise”) was the only journal in the world that specialized exclusively on the geological features.

    The article is devoted to the history and achievements of nearly 50 years of activity of the Poznań Branch of the Polish Geological Society (PGS). During these years, the number of members varied from 32 to 68. Five hundred thirty-four papers were delivered. Over a dozen national and local scientific conferences were organized. The Poznań Branch of PGS was also the organizer of two geological congresses. Another congress is scheduled for 2024 in Poznań. An outstanding achievement of the Poznań Branch is the publication of 21 books, including 15 original yearbooks under the title Abstracts of Papers (vol. 1-13) and Papers (vol. 14-15).

    The article describes stone pavements forming the surface of the Old Market Square in Poznań. In the context of postulates of replacement of a historical stone surface with modern paving, the authors took the position that the quality as well as the amount of existing rock material is fully sufficient to carry out its renovation. First and foremost, it should concern the existing granite-gneiss, and more rarely basalt, quartz and porphyry paving stones, as well as granite paving slabs and granite curb stones.

    Opis:
    The article presents several examples of historical fragments of streets of Poznań in the so-called Upper City with preserved granite gutters, stone pavements with cube dimensions 18 X 20 cm and 10 X 20 cm. Attention was also paid to the presence of setts made of basalt basin, as well as to the roads paved with fieldstone. These increasingly rare fragments of metropolitan streets should be subject to historical and architectural protection. They should be treated as the historic fabric of every city with a long and significant tradition.

    The article presents the stone pavement of the streets of Poznań's Chwaliszewo, a small district located between Ostrów Tumski and the Old Town. The text describes the current condition of the historic pavement and the historical constraints that have influenced its present condition. The historic surface of several streets in Chwaliszewo consists mainly of granite blocks and erratics.

    The full-time studies in geology started in Poznaň in 1919, i.e.when the Piast University (Wszechnica Piastowska) were established, soon after renamed to the Poznań University. Three institutes, namely Geology, Mineralogy and Palaeontology, were created. Scientists employed in those institutes produced nearly 8% of all papers in geology, published in Poland before the Second World War. Already in the academic year 1945/1946, a very small teaching team, lead by Professor K. Smulikowski, re-established the full-time studies in geology at the Poznań University, active until 1952. Only 18 students were able to receive their MSc degrees during that time. From 1952 to 1988, the full-time studies in geology were suspended. The small Chair of Geology offered courses in geology for biology and geography students first, and exclusively for geography afterwards. However, the scientific personnel of the Chair was very active in scientific investigations and publishing. Eight persons, five of them from the outside, received their PhD degrees in geology and palaeontology from the Chair. The intensive effort, started in 1987, resulted in the re-establishment of the full-time studies in Geology at Adam Mickiewicz University in the academic year 1988/1989. Following that important event and thanks to the full-time employment of several outstanding professors in geology, mineralogy, hydrogeology and palaeontology, the Chair of Geology was elevated in November 1990 to the level of the Institute of Geology. In 1992, the Institute of Geology received its permanent seat occupied to date. In 1994, the first geology students were graduated. From that time and until 2019, we graduated 378 BSc, 1017 MSc, 72 PhD and 23 DSc (habilitation), and 11 scientists received the scientific title of full professor.
