Opis:
Aerial photographs are a source of geological information that may be unobtainable elsewhere. If the fullest use is to be made of this information for the purpose of geological mapping, there must be a planned integration of the photogeological work with the field and laboratory investigations. The appearance of the first satellites for civil purposes on the beginning of the 1970s (such as ERTS – Landsat series), of most land areas of the Earth has provided new opportunity for photogeologists. Many areas can now be studied and mapped geologically for which neither adequate maps nor vertical aerial photograps were available. The advantages of the present satellite systems and examples of their application by specialists of the Polish Geological Institute are presented in this paper. Nowadays, it is practically impossible to imagine performing geological mapping without application of remote sensing data and analysis. Development of new technologies is very fast and new borne techniques are coming like permanent scatter interferometry, laser scanning etc. However, we should always remember, that they are only very useful tools to help geologists in their field mapping art and practise.

Opis:
African countries in the 1960s began to recover their independence. These facts coincided with the good results in raw materials findings of the Polish geologists and geophysicists. Therefore, in the 1960s and 1970s, geologists of the Polish Geological Institute and other companies indicated their presence in the research works in several countries of the African continent. Nowadays, the EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) members with the support from the Organization of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) prepared a strategy for sustainable strengthening of African countries’geological administrations. The strategy focuses on natural resources governance, enforcing sustainable mineral resources exploitation as well as preventing and mitigating natural disasters by establishing long-term strategic cooperation relationships in these areas. EGS, on behalf of the European Commission’s DG Development and Cooperation (DEVCO) and with the support and additional supervision of DG ENTR, was requested to cooperate with the OAGS to develop, over a period of about twelve months, a feasibility study focusing on one key priority of the EU-Africa Strategy Action Plan 2011-13, which is to "foster fur ther co-operation between African and European geological surveys”. As the result of this cooperation the identification of the Africa’s challenges in geological knowledge and skills has been done, that emerged by analysis of targeted information derivedfrom questionnaires distributed via OAGS to their members.

Two documents were commented in this paper. They were prepared by the Polish Worker’s Party organization in the Polish Geological Institute in Kraków, in 1948. There are: "Memorandum on the Polish Geological Institute" and letter to Central Committee of the Polish Worker’s Party sent through the Urban Committee of the Polish Worker’s Party in Kraków. These documents were found during organizing of the Stanisław Tyski materials and delivered to PGI-NRI Central Geological Archive by Professor Krzysztof Jaworowski. They constitute example of the harmful action on realization of the Institute’s tasks and personal policy using brutal political pressure. The party members generally criticized situation in Institute. They also demanded removal of director and other persons from management and replaced them by the party members. Let’s hope that such practices will never happen again.

Lineaments, visible in radar images and detected with the digital elevation model, and occurring within the Palaeozoic of the Holy Cross Mts., were analysed using computer processing of the tectonic data. The fault network in the Palaeozoic Holy Cross Mts., up to now studied mostly with surface cartography methods, is rather weakly expressed in linear structures, discernible in aerial, satellite and radar imagery. A detailed analysis allowed to determine main directions of the lineaments of tectonic origin and to arrive at cinematic characteristics of large dislocations present, important for reconstructing the tectogenesis of the area.

Opis:
In recent years a regular activity has been taken for the registration and monitoring of areas at risk of mass movements and landslides throughout Poland. Extensive inventory work in the sites predisposed to occurrence of landslides, initiated a search in order to improve traditional methods of mapping landslides. The traditional method relies mainly on the analysis of topographic maps, geological and geomorphological mapping in the field. For areas of extreme danger the newer mainly non-invasive methods were tried to be used such as a satellite or aerial photos. In this article have been also tested one of the more modern methods of three-dimensional imaging earth - Airborne Laser Scanning. This method is applicable to the selected landslide in the region of Łaoenica (Municipality Lanckorona). Amajor advantage of the method is the ability to filter out vegetation and other objects on the ground, which results in precise terrain model. Multiple imaging using laser scanning method, allows to obtain a precise differential model, thus in effect information on landslide activity.

Opis:
After World War II, Jan Wyżykowski studied at the Faculty of Mining University in Kraków. In 1946-1948, he held summer practices in mines and at the Polish Geological Institute (PGI), which allowed him to explore the ore deposits in Lower Silesia. On January 1951, he was transferred to the PGI, where all works related to the issues of the ore exploration were gradually taken over by the Ore Department based in Kraków. In the early 1950’s, a research program for copper exploration began to crystallize in the area located north of the Old Copper Basin and north of Wroclaw. Such program was postulated by two heads of the Ore Department, R. Krajewski and A. Graniczny. A seismic profile was acquired along the Boleslawiec-Glogów line to determine the extent of the Zechstein Kupeferschiefer formation in the Fore-Sudetic area. Wyżykowski was a planner ofthe drillings along this profile. Thefirst three boreholes did not indicate the possibility of success. What is more, Wyżykowski’s research was illegal, because he drilled to a depth of 700 metres, which was about 300 metres deeper than allowed. The thesis offutility of exploration in this area started to dominate. Despite all these adversities, Wyżykowski stubbornly strove to achieve the goal. A team led by him came across economic copper ore deposits on 23 March, 1957. In the Sieroszowice IG 1 borehole, at a depth of650 m, copper mineralization of 1.4% was found in marls. The presence of rich copper mineralization was confirmed also in a nearby borehole drilled in Lubin, S-19. The history of the "great Polish copper has started”.

Upper Silesian Coal Basin
Opis:
Polish Geological Institute as a member of TerraFirma Consortium obtained PSInSAR dataset for the Sosnowiec area (Upper Silesian Coal Basin - USCB) in mid-March 2004 and in spring 2006. The area of dataset covers northeastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Processing of the data has covered scenes both ERS-1, ERS-2 registered between 1992 and 2006. The PSInSAR data were processed by TeleRilevamento Europa. Interpretation of the Sosnowiec scene has covered analysis of the multi-thematic data, including geostatistics, land use, mining, geology and seismicity. The most interesting results obtained in the Sosnowiec area are as follows: the indicated subsidence values in the period from 1992 to 2003 vary between-39.63 mm to +25.12 mm. These values show tendencies of the slow ground motion with a very high accuracy. Preliminary interpretation of the PSInSAR data of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin indicated strong correlation between the recorded PS negative values and structural pattern of the Carboniferous strata. Clearly visible concentration of negative values is also noted at footwalls and hanging walls of the Będzin and Kłodnica regional faults. Undoubtedly, the two mentioned faults of the Variscan origin were rejuvenated during the Alpine Orogeny (Triassic deposits were found in the hanging walls of the faults). The presence of the ground motion along its strike, can suggest neotectonic character of these faults. Linear anomalies oriented WNW-ESE were formed by changing values of the ground motions which are also parallel to the productive Carboniferous deposits forming the coal basin such as the Mudstone Series, Paralic Series and Upper Silesian Sandstone Series. The explanation of these phenomena (genesis and mechanisms) needs further studies. There is an evident correlation between linear negative anomalies and induced seismicity, mainly in the vicinity of the Kłodnica fault. Interpretation of slow ground motions registered by PSInSAR method from the USCB indicates also probably prolongation of the Będzin fault in northwest direction and subsidence of the Upper Silesian Sandstone Series compared to the Mudstone Series and Paralic Series.

Opis:
The mining exploitation of hard coal in Upper Silesia has been conducted since XIX century and continues to the present days. Different methods of monitoring subsidence of the earth surface were applied in this area, startingfrom analysis of topographic maps compiled in different period of time, precise levelling and GPS measurements. Nowadays satellite interferometry seems to be use- ful and effective tool for these purposes. PS data from ERS and ENVISAT satellites very well illustrate subsidence occurring in the active mining areas where subsidence does not exceed- 40 mm /yr. These data correspond very well with subsidencepredictive models prepared by mining companies. However, the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) mining area subsides even up to 600 mm/yr (locally even more). Therefore, it is necessary to apply a different methodology. One of the solutions to this problem could be differential interferograms obtainedfrom L-band SAR images. Combination of C-Band (ERS, Envisat) andL-band (ALOS) shows excellent results. C-band SAR satellites are useful for detecting smaller displacements; in contrary L-band satellites are able to monitor surface defor- mations in range of several decimetres, being possible to detect progress of mining front.

Opis:
The paper presents results of SPINUA (Stable Point Interferometry over Unurbanised Areas) Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) processing chain to study Earth surface deformations along the SW coast of the Gulf of Gdańsk, along the SE part of the Baltic Sea. As the input for SPINUA techniques 40 descending ERS-1/2 SLC (Frame = 251, Track = 36) images from the period 1995-2001 has been used. The area of interest (AOI) includes few cities and several towns, villages and harbors. The low lying coastal areas of the SW part of the Gulf of Gdańsk are at risk of floods and marine erosion. The PSI results, however, did not reveal the presence of a regional scale, spatially consistent pattern of displacements. It is likely that any crustal deformations in the AOI simply do not exceed +2 mm/year, which is the velocity threshold we assumed to distinguish between moving and non-moving persistent scatterers (PS). Importantly, for the most part the urban areas of the main cities (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot) results show ground stability. Nevertheless, significant downward movements up to several mm/year, are locally noticed in the Vistula river delta - alluvial plain system located in the coastal zone east of Gdańsk as well as in the inland area west of the Gdańsk city. Indeed, the highest subsidence rates (-12 mm/year) was observed in the Gdańsk petroleum refinery constructed on alluvial sediments. Thus the anthropogenic loading and consolidation of the recent deposits can locally be an important factor causing ground subsidence.
