Wieliczka Salt Mine
Opis:
The saltmine in Wieliczka is a mining plant which is unique on the worldwide scale, which has been developing since the Middle Ages until the present times. The high geological complexity of bedrock in the vicinity of the mine, which is associated with the Carpathians orogeny, determines the high level of complexity of local hydrogeological conditions. At present, about 260 l/min of water discharges into the mine, which is considered very high as for a salt mine. 86% of that amount comes from three major inflows, i.e. WVII-16 (from Fornalska II chamber), WVI-32 (from Z-32 chamber) and WVI-6 (from Z-28 chamber). These seepages cause threats to the mine, not only due to their large volumes but also due to high quantities of salt that is leaching from the rock mass. The most troubled area in the Wieliczka salt mine, from the hydrogeological viewpoint, is the northern border, where salt deposits are in contact with strongly dislocated sandstones via a gypsum-clay layer. These sandstone deposits comprise not very productive aquifers that, to some degree, are isolated from one another.

Wapno Salt Dome
Opis:
Stylolites have been found in a core sample from the gypsum cap rock of the Wapno salt dome (figs 1-3) at a depth of 40 m below the land surface. These structures are inclined at 40-45ş to the core axis and cut by neomorphic gypsum crystals. Stylolites are products of the solution pressure. They commonly occur in carbonates but are very rarely encountered in evaporates, thus the origin and preservation of these structures in the cap rock of Wapno dome are interesting problems. Lithostatic pressure near the surface where the cap rock has been formed is insufficient to develop stylolites. Thus stylolites (fFigs 4-5) in gypsum cap rock of the Wapno salt diapir are probably early diagenetic structures preserved in a fragment of Zechstein anhydrite of Z2 or Z3 cyclothems. This anhydrite block with stylolites have been carried inside intruding salt masses to the top ofWapno dome. Halite and other easy soluble minerals had been dissolved, but the anhydrites with preserved stylolites have been incorporated in the cap rock and secondary altered into gypsum, similarly to the phenomenon found in Gorleben Salt Dome by Bäuerle et al. (2000).

Opis:
Detailed macroscopic profiling of salt cores from selected wells drilled in the Góra salt diapir (central Poland; Fig. 1, 2) and analyses of bromine content made it possible to define and characterize lithostratigraphic units of the Zechstein (Upper Permian) succession (Fig. 3, 4). Interpretation of relations between the units identified in the studied well sections allowed the first schematic reconstruction of internal structure of top part of the salt trunk (Fig. 5). The principal idea of this reconstruction is probable origin of the Góra diapir as a salt trunk with a recumbent fold at the top (Fig. 6A). Subsequent uplift of the diapir and erosion resulted in removal of significant part of younger salt deposits so only those squeezed into the salt trunk interior escaped the erosion (Fig. 6B). Models of internal structure of salt diapirs are of remarkable practical value as they facilitate proper location of the mining works (e.g. leaching wells, galleries, chambers and caverns) and prediction of possible gas and water hazards.

Opis:
Mineral resources of the Ponidzie region, whose usage played an important role in the economic and cultural history of Poland, or whose geological surveys contributed to the development of geological sciences include: Pińczów limestones, gypsum, sulphur, oil and salt (although salt does not occur in this region). The Pińczów limestones have been commonly used for construction and sculpture since the Early Middle Ages, particularly intense during the Renaissance and Baroque periods as well as in the mid-20th century. Also the tradition of gypsum usage dates back to the beginning of the Polish State, which is proved by Early Medieval monuments in Wioelica. Although the sulphur extraction in the Czarkowy mine took place only during the 19th century, this mine was famous as the only one in the Russian Empire. In turn, the discovery of oil near the village of Wójcza in the second half of the 19th centur, caused geological discussion on the sources of this product in the Fore-Carpathian Depression. However, the most interesting is the salt prospection in the 18th and 19th centuries. Owing to the lack of salt in the region, the survey was not successful, but contributed to the comprehensive geological recognition of the region as well as provided springs of mineral water which are still used or has stimulated growth of unique halophilic plant communities.

Opis:
Construction of a data base structure and resulted 3D structure images of sedimentary stratiform deposits was exemplified in a case of rock salt deposit at the Puck Bay (northern Poland). Analysis of 3D models of deposit structure (lithological and facies ones) and distribution models of selected chemical (resource) parameters evidenced a high correlation between the distinguished salt facies types and resource features. The imaged facies and chemical patterns indicated that the middle and western parts of the deposit are the most prospective for future management for both underground salt exploitation and cavern solution (gas/oil storage). Another area for future prospecting and management is located towards NW and NNW from the actual salt deposit area. The presented methodology could be applied to other sedimentary deposits, e.g. raw minerals and lignites, simplifying the resource calculation and projecting their proper and economic management.

Opis:
Large concentrations of lignite, creating economic lignite deposits, occur frequently in a close vicinity or directly above salt domes. Those lignite accumulations, common in the northern and central parts of Szczecin-Łódź-Miechów Synclinorium (Polish Lowlands), were partially produced by halotectonic processes active during Tertiary. Generally, differentiated activity of halotectonics did not secure proper conditions controlling extensive accumulation of phytogenic matter and even destroyed the uplifted lignite seams. However, conditions convenient for phytogenic matter accumulation were rather common locally. The following processes: 1) salt subrosion of a dome upper part, 2) halokinetic salt outflow along opened fault surfaces, 3) formation of secondary peripherial sinks nearby the domes and 4) development of extensional depressions on the top of disrupted antyclines formed within a salt-dome overburden during the uplift, all were responsible for generating of salt-related sinks. In a regional scale, development of the primary peripherial sinks between salt structures (mostly salt crests, walls and pillows) could be also related to the halokinetics. Detailed analysis of geological setting in vicinities of some major salt domes on the Polish Lowlands evidenced that more than 80% of lignite resources are directly or indirectly related to these structures. Those lignite resources are most profitable due to an advantagenous overburden ratio. Application of complex research methods (including high-resolution seismic profilling) enables a model construction of those areas and precise defining the relations between stages of salt structure development and a rate of phytogenic accumulation, offering/bringing significant data for lignite prospection.

Opis:
The paper presents the use of the Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to determine magnitude of subsidence in area of the town ofWieliczka. The town is home to a unique salt mine, over 700 years old, one of the best known tourist attractions in Poland. Each year the mine is visited by about 1 million tourists from all over the world and in 1978 UNESCO placed it on its first International List of theWorld Cultural and Natural Heritage. There is direct evidence that the mining has been influencing stability of ground and buildings in the town, which is located above the mine. The application of the PSI SPINUA technique made it possible to identify large number of radar targets (with density exceeding 100 PS/km2), suitable for monitoring ground motion in the Wieliczka area. The results show continuous subsidence with average annual movements ranging from a few millimeter per year to 24 mm/yr in the period 1992–2000. The detected subsiding zone very well corresponds to the extent of the underground salt mine. There are also indications of possible connections between the mine-induced subsidence and the presence of the old large landslides occurring on the north-facing slopes south of the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
