Opis:
The article presents World Karst Aquifer Mapping Project (WOKAM). The goal of this project, implemented in 2012– 2015, is to establish the first karst aquifer world map, presenting karst aquifers, most important water intakes, karst springs and caves. Selection criteria of the karstic objects were discussed in the paper. Database, created on their basis covering the area of Poland, includes: 17 water intakes (extracting mainly from the Triassic carbonate aquifer of Silesian – Kraków monocline), 7 springs (including 5 vaucluses from Tatra Mountains), 23 caves (located mainly in Western Tatra Mountains and in Kraków – Wieluń Upland). There is a probability of location of individual hydrogeological objects from Poland on the world karst aquifer map considering the importance of the region.

Opis:
Recognition of subsoil in areas threatened with discontinuous deformation associated with the existence of natural and mining voids can be implemented by various geophysical methods. The purpose of such research, apart from confirming the existence of voids, is to determine their spatial extent. This is not a simple issue, regardless of the geophysical method used. This paper discusses the possibilities of geometrization of karst phenomenon localization using the ground penetrating radar (GPR) method by the example of a karst cave as a natural void. The area of data acquisition is located on limestone formations with numerous karstforms. The study object is the main hall of the karst cave with a height of up to 3 m, located at a depth of 3 to 7 m below the surface. Such location and shape of the subsurface structure made it possible for the author to perform a wide range of research. Their original aspects are presented in this paper. The shape of the hall was obtained using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The GPR data were obtained employing the 250 MHz shielded antenna that was directly positioned using a robotized total station with the option of automatic target tracking. Thus, the GPR and geodetic data were immediately achieved in a uniform coordinate system. The accuracy of the data obtained in this way is discussed in this paper. The author’s original algorithm for processing of GPR data into a point cloud is presented. Based on the results obtained, it was possible to compare the GPR signal, which represents the shape of the cave hall, in relation to its image in the form of a point cloud from terrestrial laser scanning. A unique part of this paper is the selection of filtration procedures and their parameters in optimal GPR data processing, which were widely discussed and documented in a way beyond the standard filtration procedures. A significant contribution is the analysis that was carried out on the data obtained in the field and on the model data generated using the finite difference method. Modeling was carried out for two wave sources: exploding reflector and point. The presented methodology and discrimination between the actual shape of the cave, GPR field data and model data made it possible for the author to draw many conclusions related to the possibilities of shape geometrization of the subsurface voids determined by the GPR method.

Opis:
The article concerns the controversy on the four hypotheses of karst origin of lake basins in Upper Cretaceous carbonates of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lakeland (central-eastern Poland; Fig. 1). The hypotheses assume that the lake basins (Fig. 2) developed in the Holocene with the active morphogenetic participation of subartesian waters. The main problem is the lack of references to the laws of thermochemistry and kinetics of dissolution of carbonate rocks. In the Ca2+ and HCO3 concentrations in the medium solution (Tab. 1), rationally adopted for this work, the values of the enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs potential/free energy have been calculated (formulas: 9, 10 and 11). Using the conductometric method (Tab. 2, Figs. 3 and 4), the kinetics of dissolution of carbonate basement rocks, i.e. reaction rate v (formula 13), rate constant k (14a), and reaction half-life t1/2 (15), have also been determined. These investigations show that the theses formulated in the hypotheses are not acceptable. The rationale for such an assessment is the incompatibility of the assumptions of the hypotheses with the first and second law of thermochemistry. The second important reason is the ignoring of chemical kinetics as an indirect indicator of the time of the formation of the karst features. According to the author, the main period of the formation of lake basins, in terms of their origin, should be associated with palaeokarst of Neogene deposits.

Two UNESCO Global Geoparks were established in Hungary. This paper presents the Bakony - Balaton Geopark, located in the western part of the country, predominantly within the Transdanubian Range. It includes uplands and low-elevation mountains of North Bakony, South Bakony, Balaton Uplands and Keszthely Mountains, with basins situated in between, as well as Lake Balaton itself. Geologically, the dominant part of the territory is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, mainly limestones and dolomites. Other significant rock formations are Eocene limestones, Mio-Pliocene sediments of the Pannonian Sea and end-Neogene basalts. Karst phenomena, residual volcanic hills, fossil sinter cones and river gorges are the most characteristic geomorphological features of the Geopark. Forty-five geosites have been recognized in the Geopark, although access facilities and interpretative content the Geopark is also rich in cultural heritage and its southern part counts as the major tourist

The reaction of the Tatra’s vaucluse water systems to catastrophic weather events. Prz. Geol., 68: 561-565. Abstract. Long-term observation of the Tatra Mountains have allowed the determination of the degree ofsensitivity of waters circulating in karst vaucluse systems to atmospheric phenomena. The correlation coefficients for r fluctuations in the water table in Tatra vaucluse springs clearly show that during the period from the beginning of the monitoring, in the 1980s, to the mid-2010s (2013), the waters of all Tatra vaucluse springs reacted in a similar way. Disastrous storms that, at the turn of 2013 caused huge damage to the vegetation covering the areas of the Polish part of the Western Tatras, contributed to the intensification of surface erosion processes and, as a consequence, to uncovering outcrops of karst rocks. An analysis of correlation relationships between fluctuations in the water table in the Tatra vaucluse springs in the period after 2013 showed a clear change in the value of the correlation coefficient r in relation to the waters circulating in the Wywierzysko Chochołowskie vaucluse system.

The paper reviews the recent state ofstudies for karst phenomena on northern slopes of the Śnieżnik Massif, Krowiarki range and Zlote Mts in East Sudetes with particular reference to Biała Lądecka basin. Conflned spatial character of the d/ainagf basinand cave sites within allow a better understanding of landscape response to climate and tectonic proxies controlling landscape evolution at least since the end ofMiocene (Messinian). New karst passages discoveries from Niedźwiedzia Cave resulted in the recognition of several sites of allochthonous sediments deposited at different cave morphological levels up to 50 metres above Kleśnica river floor. Furthermore, a new model ofpolygenetic origin for some karst chambers in Niedźwiedzia Cave originating from karstification processes and mass-movements superimposed has been suggested. Presumably, it may be linked with neotectonic processes and/or climatic changes affecting East Sudetes during the Late Cenozoic.

Opis:
The Czerwone Wierchy Nappe is the main part of the Czerwone Wierchy Massif. Several big cave systems are developed in this structural unit, e.g., Wielka Śnieżna Cave System, Kozia, Ptasia, Mała w Mułowej and a lot of smaller caves. Cross-section I presents two main parts of Czerwone Wierchy Nappe-Organy and Idziary units which are separated by the Organy Dislocation. Similar structure is characteristic for whole Czerwone Wierchy Nappe (Kotański, 1963). The abundance of caves near Organy fault is a result of intensive tectonic processes in this area what is visible at the western slope of the Miętusia Valley. Further to the east , so far scientists (Kotański, 1961; Grodzicki & Kardaś, 1989) suggested that whole the Wielka Śnieżna Cave System is developed within the dziary Unit. Our geological cross-sections of the upper part of Miętusia Valley, (based on Grochocka-Rećko, 1963) show that only upper, vertical parts ofWielka Śnieżna and Śnieżna Studnia caves are developed in the dziary Unit, similarly as the upper, vertical part of the Mała Cave. Lower parts of cave systems are related to the Organy Dislocation and the Organy Unit. It seems that geological structure of the Czerwone Wierchy Massif is a dominant factor controlling the cave passages development. As a results of geological structure, the main path of water flow, at the level ca. 1000 m a.s.l., from lower parts of Wielka Śnieżna Cave in Miętusia Valley towards Lodowe Źródło in Kościeliska Valley developed solely along Middle Triassic layers in a latitudinal fold turn of the Organy Unit (Mała Łąka Fold, Kotański, 1961).

The Smolensk Lakeland National Park is situated north of Smoleńsk in the NW Russia. Its morphology is associated with the last European ice sheet: glacial erosion and accumulation, glacial water activity, locally with the so-called thermokarst process or karst in the strict sense. The post-glacial morphological depressions are filled with lake waters. The most interesting lakes are: Chistik, Mutnoye, Balshoye and Maloye Striechnoye, Glubokoye, Dolgoye, Krugloye, Pietrovskoye, Bukino, Gorodishche, Svyatec, Sapsho, Polovia, Gniloye, Rytoye, Dgo, Shchuch’ye, Baklanovskoye, Bachovskoye, Vervizhskoye, Pal’tsevskoye and Bieloye. The Smolensk Lakeland National Park is one of a few territories in Europe where the beauty of nature and landscapes dominate the long-standing human presence. Nowadays, there are a few residents, a growing number of patients, seasonal campers and tourists in the park area.

Opis:
Presently, about 160 salt domes of various sizes exist in the Zagros fold-thrust belt in southern Iran. The salt domes constitute a unique proving ground for research on salt tectonics. In the dry climate that currently dominates in Iran, forms of horizontal salt formations are created, referred to as salt glaciers, in addition to typical steeply falling salt domes. Consequently, it is possible to conduct observations of geomorphological processes developing on the surface of exposed salt rocks and keep a continuous record of their tectonic activity. Salts occurring in that area represent the Hormuz (Hormoz) Formation of the Ediacaran period (Late Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian). The rocks of the formation usually present a colourful blend of rock salt, anhydrite, black dolomite, shale, and red volcanic tuff, as well as extrusive magmatic and metamorphosed rocks that are interpreted as fragments of deep basement elevated to the land surface by salt domes. The paper describes the geology and geomorphology of the Jashak (Dashti) salt glacier from the Busher Province and two salt domes located on the Persian Gulf Islands: Hormuz (Hormoz Island) and Namakdan (Qeshm Island). The present-day salt dome geomorphology is a result of both climatic effects (precipitation and air temperature) and diapir uplifting forces.

Opis:
In this paper, two scenic caves, five selected karst rock forms, and five rock outcrops situated in the Ojców National Park and its protected zone area are the subject of comparative research, considered as very essential examples of geotouristic potential. Most of their karst forms differ between each other. These include Łokietek and Ciemna (Dark) cave, Kraków Gate, Rękawica and Igła Deotymy rock-cliff at Ojców, Duży Pochylec rock-cliff in Skała, and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower at Pieskowa Skała. Apart from them, outcrops of Quaternary calcareous tufa and rock falls at Ojców, an abrasion surface cutting Upper Jurassic limestones and covered with Cretaceous limestones and marls, Pleistocene loess at Januszowice, and the Duże Skałki (Big Rocks) former quarry of Upper Jurassic limestone at Czajowice were also studied. All of them are situated in the Silesian-Kraków Monocline. The caves, rock-cliffs and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower developed in the Upper Jurassic Oxfordian massive limestone. Their karst forms are diverse and picturesque. The other objects selected for research are also very interesting and important examples, displaying products of very complex geological processes. The comparative geotouristic potential evaluation of all 12 objects was made to meet tourists', educators' and investors' expectations and needs to increase their geotouristic development level. The statistical data of the annual number of visitors at the described two caves is also discussed. In general, interest in them as geotouristic abiotic nature objects has been growing regularly until today. They have become very widely known in Poland. Moreover, the Łokietek Cave, Kraków Gate rock-cliff and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower have become very popular worldwide.

Pollen analysis of 16 samples of coaly sediments taken from one of sinkholes developed within the Triassic limestones cropping out at Tarnów Opolski, Upper Silesian Upland has been done. The study revealed a taxonomically rich assemblage of excellently preserved sporomorphs (pollen grains and spores) as well as microfossils of fresh-water algae (mainly Chlorophyta). The pollen analysis made it possible to reconstruct a vegetation growing during sedimentation of deposits filling the studied sinkhole and clear facies succession, from open aquatic (with abundant fresh-water algae) to marshy one (e.g. swamp forests composed of Taxodium, Nyssa and Alnus). Riparian forests dominated by deciduous trees, e.g. Pterocarya, Carya and Liquidambar, grew on wet terrains surrounding the water body. Drier elevated terrains were overgrown by mixed mesophytic forests with small admixture of thermophilous plants. Results of the pollen analysis indicate that during the sedimentation of the sinkhole filling the climate was warm temperate and moderately wet. Recorded sporomorphs and a mutual ratio of arctotertiary and palaeotropical taxa point at a Middle Miocene age of the studied deposit.
