Opis:
A new research has been done on the high pressure minerals from the Earth’s Mantle Transition and Lower Zone. The Earth’s Mantle extends from the “Moho” (Mohoroviè) discontinuity down to a depth of 2,900 km and constitutes 83% of the Earth’s volume and 67% of its mass. The mantle is further divided into two seismic regions: the upper and thelower mantle separated by a seismic zone of discontinuity at a depth of 670 km, which is also the maximum depth to which subducted lithospheric plates can reach. The additional discontinuity zone, i.e. a depth of 410 km together with a zone of 670 km, corresponds to the transformation site of the silicate mineral structure, which also affects the speed of propagation of seismic waves. Mantle peridotite samples indicate that olivine is the main component of the uppermost part of the upper mantle, up to adepth of 410 km. At greater depths, down to 660 km, in the so-called Transition, transformation of olivine into its high-pressure poly-morphs (wadsleyite and ringwoodite) showing a spinel structure, is observed. Experimental research data on natural bridgmanite((Mg, Fe)SiO3), which exhibits a perovskite structure and is the main mineral of the lower mantle and the most common mineral in the Earth, have been presented. The problem of nitrogen and water amounts in the Earth’s lower mantle and a content of new iron polymorphs in the Earth’s core have also been discussed.

Opis:
Wegener‘s Pangea comprised all the continents during Permian times, surrounded by the Panthalassa all-ocean, much wider than the recent Pacific. The process of widening of new oceans (Atlantic, Arctic and Indian) during the Pangea breakup should be simultaneous with the shrinking of the pra-Pacific. However, there is much evidence that there are close biogeographic links between continents surrounding the Pacific, and the perimeter of the ocean becomes larger. If the Pacific expands like the other oceans, the Earth expansion is inevitable. The plate-tectonic fundamentals of supercontinent reconstructions refer to the hypothesis of the cyclic evolution of continental plates and to the assumption that plate collisions result in amalgamation of successive supercontinents followed by their break-up. As the result, the term “supercontinental cycle” was introduced. Thus, the Pangea history becomes a sequence of different consecutive Pangeas. Two periods of Precambrian supercontinent amalgamation were distinguished based on the supercontinent cyclicity hypothesis, leading to the formation of Meso-Neoproterozoic Rodinia and the Early Proterozoic Pre-Rodinia supercontinent. Pre-Rodinia, Rodinia and Pangea were strikingly similar to one another. To explain this phenomenon, a process of self-organization of tectonic plates is invoked. On an expanding Earth, there was only one supercontinent – Pangea – composed of continental lithosphere surrounding the planet smaller than the present Earth. The break-up process of the supercontinent occurred only once during Earth‘s history. Earth expansion offers a reasonable solution to the main plate-tectonic paradox that the continents could have been repeatedly separated and returned to the same unique configuration.

Opis:
In the Polish geochemical literature there is no general discussion of the occurrence and behaviour of REE in surface environments. This text is an attempt to review the world literature concerning the REE occurrence and behaviour mainly in rocks, minerals (primary and secondary) and soils, and during hypergenic and soil-forming processes. The article also presents the atomic structure and properties of REE, their divisions and participation in the biosphere, organic matter and sediments of selected Polish lakes and, additionally, anthropogenic sources. Particular attention is given to primary and secondary REE minerals and their presence in rocks, soils (including soil-forming processes) and hypergenic processes. The main source of REE is the primary minerals of acid and siliceous igneous rocks and secondary minerals of sedimentary rocks. Among primary minerals the largest quantities of REE are concentrated in heavy minerals (anatase, ilmenite, sphe- ne, rutile and zircon). Basic silicate weathering leads to the formation of secondary clay minerals which, together with iron and manganese oxides and carbonates, are the main sources of REE as secondary minerals.

Scientific and educational potential of the academic Earth Museum at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland is analysed along with its activities related to modern approaches to museums. The social context of the traditional, place-based museology is modified by 1) the dominance of science-centred role of the educational institutions and 2) the view of the museum as an educational product. The first assumption leads to the dependence on an ongoing volunteer support, while the second requires a substantial managerial effort to accomodate the support of the community. This opens up a new perspective in which the museum becomes a venue for innovative means of scientific communication in which the scientific knowledge is disseminated through the myriad of educational projects at the local and regional scale, contributing to the development of the whole community.

Opis:
The constant evolution of civilisation and ever more advanced technologies have forced the global economy to search for new and renewable resources. Since the 1950s, rare earth elements (REE) have played an increasingly significant role in the production of new materials. The REE form a group of 17 elements (15 lanthanides, yttrium and scandium) with special properties that distinguish them from the other elements. These unique and essential raw materials have numerous applications nowadays. Without the rare earths, many branches of industry would not be able to function. The main resources of the REE come from the rocks with mineralization enriched in minerals with a higher REO (rare earth oxides) contents. Although there are around 270 different REE-bearing mineral species, the exploitation of the REE refers to less than 10 minerals. Five major REE minerals (the major minerals from group of bastnäsite (bastnaesite), monazite, xenotime, apatite and perovskite (loparite)) are characterized and described. The REO percentage content varies from max. 16% in apatite to max. 79% in bastnäsite. The examples shown were chosen due to their importance and level of extraction. This review-paper has been based on the compilation of data from mineralogical publications, mineralogical data websites and metallurgical articles about the alloys and their compounds.

Rare-earth elements (REE) were determined for the Upper Jurassic limestone and dolomites from the following outcrops: Góra OEw. Anny, Kostrze Quarry, Księża Góra, and Skały Twardowskiego. REE patterns are similar for all the investigated samples. Dolomites and limestone are enriched in light REE, they exhibit positive La anomalies, and negative Ce and Eu anomalies. Negative Ce and Eu anomalies are typical for oxidizing environments during dolomitization processes. Distinct enrichment in light REE comparing to heavy REE indi-cates that the sea water was not the only component of dolomitization fluids.

Opis:
The rock burst that occurred on November 29, 2016, in the "Rudna” copper mine has had tragic consequences. Eight miners were killed in the heavy machinery compartment located in the safest area of the safety pillar. This is not the first accident of its kind. It was caused by the collapse of the overlying anhydrite layer that is approximately 200 m thick in this region. The mining operation is based on the room and pillar system that results in stress accumulation within the anhydrite layer, which, at some time, causes a rock burst. The best method to prevent this phenomenon is the use of backfill. The entire mined surface of a deposit is greater than 100 square kilometres. Such amounts of sands are not stored within the mines. It is therefore necessary to carry out operations to adapt more than 1 billion tonnes of tailings accumulated in the "Żelazny Most” reservoir to the needs of backfilling of mine workings. The widespread use of hardened backfill should prevent such great rock bursts in copper mines.

This article is focused on the aspects related to the occurrence and the behavior of REE in hydrosphere. Particular attention is given to the natural waters of Europe including Poland. The data shown in this work are based on the studies and discussions published elsewhere, as well as on own investigations of REE concentrations in the natural waters of Poland (ground- and surface waters). The aim of this article is to present information on REE in different types of waters (ocean, ground- and surface waters). Potential sources of REE in the selected waters and factors affecting their concentrations and distribution patterns (signatures) are discussed. The input of REE originating from human activity is indicated and some examples of anthropogenic factors are presented. Additionally, some general information on natural REE abundances in various environmental compartments and their applications in the industry are provided. The potential influence of some major components on determination of europium content in water samples during measurements by mass spectrometry is also explained.

Opis:
There are few unresolved questions in the Earth Sciences which generate as much debate as the nature of the Hadean Earth: i.e. the rock record between the Earth’s formation and about 3.8 billion years ago. Current knowledge of the nature and origin of the earliest crust comes largely from studies of the mineral zircon (ZrSiO4). The oldest zircon grains on Earth (4.46 Ga) are found in Jack Hills, Australia. They represent a time capsule of what the Earth was like from ca. 4.4-4.0 Ga during the Hadean. The other ancien rocks (>3.8 Ga) are preserved in Antarctica, Canada, China, Greenland, Labrador, Western Australia and Swaziland, with the oldest known rochi on Earth from the Acasta gneiss in Northern Canada, dated at 4.03 Ga. Most likely, the second oldest rock record in the world (>3.9 Ga) may be derivedfrom the Nanok gneiss in the Nain Complex of the Saglek-Hebron area in the northern part of the Labrador Peninsula. Extensive investigation of these rocks will allowfurther characterizing the nature of the earliest preserved crust.

The Saglek Block of the Nain Complex in Northern Labrador forms the westernmost part of the North Atlantic Craton. It is one of the few regions on Earth where early Archaean crust is preserved. It consists of regionally metamorphosed gneisses to either granulite-facies from 2.74 to 2.71 Ga or amphibolite-facies at ca. 2.70 Ga. The Saglek Block is dominated by two suites of metaigneous gneisses: the Uivak I TTG suite (>3.6 Ga) and the Uivak II augen gneisses (ca. 3.4 Ga). Four samples offelsic Uivak I orthogneiss were selected to petrographi- cal and mineralogical studies: Johannes Point Cove (L1419), TigigakyukInlet (L1434; L1440) and Big Island (L1443). Sample composition (granodiorite-tonalite) and mineralogy (mostly plagioclase and quartz, with minor K-feldspar and biotite, and accessory zircon and apatite) for three of the four samples are consistent with published data of the Uivak I gneiss. Sample L1434 contains ferroean diopside and hornblende, which are absent in the other samples. Based on detailed mineralogical analyses, authors concluded that more mafic sample, can not belong to the suite of the Uivak I gneisses. Most probably it represents the younger Uivak II. Further, geochronological study is going to be conducted to characterise both, Uivak I and Uivak II gneisses isotopically.

The aim of this paper is to provide a report on the IODP expedition 360 to the Polish geoscientific community. Expedition 360 to the Atlantis Bank along the Southwest Indian Ridge was Leg 1 of the SloMo Project. The primary objective of the SloMo Project is to test competing hypotheses on the nature of the Moho at the slow-spreading oceanic lithosphere. Based on a seismic survey and geologic mapping, the Moho beneath Atlantis Bank is believed to represent a serpentinization front, and not an igneous boundary between gabbro andperidotite. Expedition 360 started on November 30,2015 in Colombo (Sri Lanka), and ended on January 30,2015 in Port Louis (Mauritius). Hole U1473A was drilled 790 m through massive gabbro. Core recovery ranges from 44 to 96% towards the bottom of the hole, where excellent drilling conditions occurred. This deepest single-leg basement hole drilled into ocean crust is in overall good condition andcan be re-entered at Leg 2. For the first time, a Polish nominee has been selectedfor the scientific party of an oceanic IODP expedition. The mantle drilling project raised much attention in the Polish media. One hundred rock samples have been collected to investigate in Poland.
