Due to the differentiation of landslides in Kraków city area, an artificial neural network method (multilayer perceptron) was used to determine the landslide susceptibility (LS). The calculations were performed in the r.landslide module. The network learning was carried out on the basis of 8 thematic layers (slopes, slope exposure, absolute height, relative height, convergence index, surface lithology, sub-Quaternary lithology, distance from tectonic discontinuities). For modelling, 434 points representing landslides and the same number of points of locations without landslides were used. Among the set of points, 70% was allocated to the training phase, 15% to the validation phase, and 15% to the phase. In order to assess the network performance, based on the results of the test phase, a confusion matrix was made. Approximately 22% of the city’s area is susceptible to landslide occurrence (LS > 0.05 ). It overlap existing landslides and cover areas where they have not occurred yet. The greatest number of areas susceptible to landslide occurrence is located in districts X (54% of the district area) and VII (47%). There are also the most susceptile areas (LS > 0.95). The sensitivity analysis implemented in the module showed that among the thematic layers used for modelling the slopes, convergence index, distance from tectonic discontinuities and sub-Quaternary lithology have the greatest impact on the landslide susceptibility.

Hydrogeological maps of the Polish Tatra Mts. and Podhale region are dated back to the sixties of the last century. In that time, within the frame of the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, 1 : 300 000, the Cieszyn sheet which covered the Tatras and the Podhale region was elaborated. A very important input in the hydrogeological cartography of this region was the Hydrogeological Map of the Podhale and the adjacent areas, 1 : 100 000 published in 1982. In the 1990s accomplishment of the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, 1 : 50 000 has been launched. The area under cartographic studies covers four sheets: Czarny Dunajec, Biały Dunajec, Tatry Zachodnie, and TatryWysokie. Some new Geographic Information System data regarding the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, 1 : 50 000, such as first aquifer, its occurrence and hydrodynamics, pollution vulnerability and quality of groundwater is presently continued and complimented.

The paper presents the results of new mineralogical and petrographic analyses of Middle Jurassic sideritic rocks in the Kujawy area. The scope of the research has been extended to the Ciechocinek-Brześć Kujawski-Wojszyce zone, where clayey and sandy siderites and sideritic coquina form only inserts in siliciclastic rocks. Early diagenetic sideroplesite and mesodiagenetic sideroplesite, Fe-dolomite, ankerite, pistomestite and calcite occur among carbonate minerals. They are accompanied by an early diagenetic green mineral called chamosite and identified as berthierine in the XRD analysis. The richest mineral composition occurs in the sideritic coquina containing various shell elements, often also ooids. It is suggested that the formation of the coquina in the Klodawa-Łęczyca anticline area was caused by saline movements of the Cimmerian orogeny. The start-up and blending of salt masses and the rockfracture contributed to the intensive circulation of mineralizing solutions and the development of diagenetic processes, especially the replacement of unstable components and the cementation of Jurassic sediments throughout the Kujawy area.

This paper shows characteristics of sulphurous waters from the Solec-Zdrój area. Evaluation of their chemistry was based on the results of analyses of groundwater sampled from boreholes in: Solec-Zdrój, Wełnin and Dobrowoda and from the springs: Senisławice, Gadawa, Szczerbaków and Piestrzec. The following hydrochemical facies of groundwater were identified: Ca‒SO4‒ HCO3 , S, Na‒Cl‒SO4 , S to Cl‒Na, S , with TDS in the range of 1.9‒47.0 g/dm3. Examined waters are also featured by considerable concentrations of iodine and fluorine. The research results proved that the geological setting is one of the most important factors defining the water chemistry variability. In general, the chemical composition of sulphide waters in this region is determined by the interactions between the groundwaters and rocks.

Hydrogeothermal conditions of the Bochnia - Brzesko area within of Devonian, Cretaceous, Jurassic and Miocene aquifers are evaluated. Particularly favourable geothermal conditions in this area result from good hydrogeological parameters of the Late Cretaceous aquifer [Cenomanian sandstones, up to 80 m thick in this area]. Heat power estimate for one geothermal doublet [with a heat pump system] exploiting the Cenomanian aquifer yields 1.5 MWt. Currently, other aquifers in this area [Miocene, Jurassic, Devonian] are regarded as being of secondary importance for geothermal purposes.

Opis:
The paper presents inventory and results of valorization of geotopes located in the Walbrzych region. This region is situated in south-western Poland, in proximity of the Wałbrzych Foothills (Bolków-Wałbrzych Foothills), Wałbrzych Mts., Kamienne Mts. and Sowie Mts. and Kamienna Góra Basin. The 149 geotopes which represents 6 geological themes - sedimentology, volcanism, metamorphism, geomorphology, hydrogeology, geology of Quaternary - have been selected and evaluated. All the data collected for these sites are stored in the database and may be displayed on several thematic maps. Based on results of valorization of geotopes, analyses of geology and geomorphology of the area as well as evaluation of land development, the seven geotourist sub-areas (so-called domains) have been differentiated. The results of the geotopes inventory and valorization indicate a possibility to propose a new geotourist area in the studied region and name it "Wałbrzych Geotourist Area".

Opis:
The capture area from which groundwater flows to a well and well resources are very important features of groundwater intake. Usually they can be determined on the basis of well pumping test data and using Theis-Jacob's equations. However, evaluations of the above mentioned features are sometimes needed at a preliminary stage, before pumping tests are performed and when equation parameters are still not available. Three pieces of useful advice are here proposed for such cases, namely: using Dupuit's equations for superposition instead of the Theis-Jacob's ones; using a computer program instead of superposition construction by hand; applying a probabilistic approach, using spreadsheet for choosing the suitable groundwater resource value from those obtained by means of different deterministic methods. To explain these tips, some examples regarding an unconfined aquifer are presented.

The paper presents results of long-term studies in the Kashubian Lake district that have been completed with data gathered over the lastfive years. The purpose of this research was to assess a temporal variability of groundwater chemical composition and to analyze risk of pollutant migration to subsurface water. Investigation indicates local, however, significant anthropogenic influence on a shallow aquifers.The assessment of shallow groundwater vulnerability to pollution has been performed with the use of DRASTIC method. The results revealed that about 60% of the catchment area is moderately high susceptible to pollution and 28% is potentially at high risk. The use of DRASTIC method has helped to explain the causes of a local contaminants in shallow aquifers.

The paper provides an overview analysis concerning the major elements of the environment of mining areas, described based on research to develop a method for the assessment of flooding threat in mining areas. The mechanism of flooding-induced changes in the surface of mining areas under conditions of restoring natural water flows in the USCB is analyzed. The state-of-the-art has been discussed in the context of environmental elements used to evaluate water invasion in mining and post-mining areas, taken from hydrogeology, hydrology, mining, and environmental protection studies. The selected features of the mining environment are characterized, in particular: the area limiting the flow of water, including the surface of the mining area and the aquifer base, local outflow bases and local water drainage basins, depression funnel, hydraulic connections between mines, surface waterways and natural lakes and ponds as well as inundated areas, floods, morphological troughs, depression and non-flood basins.

The article presents results of investigations carried out in the central, most elevated part of the Kashubian Lake District, in the area of the Szymbarskie Hills and the Ostrzyckie Lake. The occurrence of groundwater outflows is very diverse here; wide areas of young glacial elevations are free from springs, while large concentration of groundwater outflows is observed in the vicinity of trough lakes. Investigations of the outflows discharge and of the water chemical composition were carried out in the period of three years. Most of the analyzed springs are perennial, only a few of them are of periodic character. Comparison of the obtained results with the results of the research performed 40 years ago shows little diversity, without a clear trend to development or disappearance of groundwater outflows.

Mining companies that own opencast excavations with the prospect of future reclamation, may constitute a serious consumer group for gangue (mining waste) from coal mining and other groups of waste. The aim of the study is to identify the location of active opencast mining excavations of carbonate raw materials in relation to the boudaries of the Main Groundwater Basin (MGB) in Poland. The exploited excavations of carbonate raw materials are located in the southern Polish provinces (Dolnośląskie, Lubelskie, Łódzkie, Małopolskie, Opolskie, Podkarpackie, Śląskie and Świętokrzyskie voivodships) and are located on the map of the MGB boundaries prepared by PSH PIG-PIB. As a result it was found that 29 of the 66 pits are located within the designated MGB areas, which represents about 44% of the total area. In such areas, proper selection of wastes is a very important issue because of their quality and possible changes in chemical composition over time.

The article deals with selected examples of old nautical maps (portolans), topographic maps, archival materials of the 19th century German language studies, which are valuable sources of information on the history of landslide processes. The city of Gdynia was founded in 1926, and its location despite very unfavourable formation of mass movements, was determined by economic and political reasons. As documented on nautical maps from 1596, landslides have been occurring in the coastal zone of today’s Gdynia since at least the 16th century. Within the limits of the zone, the oldest structural damage has been observed. The Urmesstischblätter map from 1837 documented damage to the redoubt in Cypel Oksywski. These fortifications, which were erected during Napoleonic Wars between 1810 and 1812, were completely rouined in the first half of the 19th century. It was the first time when mass movement resulted in financial losses in Poland’s coastal zones. Compared with the present, the 19th century saw an increase in mass movement activation in coastal zones. Between 1837 and 1909 the maximal changes in Cypel Oksywski were 2.2 m a year. The landslide in Cypel Oksywski is also the first stabilized landslide within the city limits of Gdynia. It also has the longest history of stabilizing efforts that go back to 1909. This article shows, based on the study of a landslide in Wielki Kackfrom 1930, that in the development of the city of Gdynia virtually from the beginning of its foundation in 1926, man-made dangerous gravitational processes have always been present.

The paper presents a statistical approach to landslide susceptibility modelling using the GIS-based spatial data analysis. The area of investigation is an urban district in which the activation of mass movements is of interest to both the local population and the authorities. The analyzes were carried out on the basis of the “Map of landslides and risk areas for the city of Gdansk” drawn in 2011. The research took into account the geological, geomorphological, hydrological, hydrogeological and anthropogenic conditions. Eleven landslide influencing factors were considered in the analyses. The landslide susceptibility map was evaluated by the landslides index method. The obtained results show that the most susceptible to landslides are slopes of angle between 10–29° and areas located at a distance of 50 m from watercourses and reservoirs. The presence of silty sands, silts and clays along a lithological layer and the N, NWand NE aspect of a slope are also of great significance. The final map presents the areas with the greatest probability of mass movement occurrence.

Regions formed in late Pleistocene usually show complex hydrogeological conditions. Groundwater circulation and the contribution of surface water in the groundwater flow system is not easy to determine. An important tool in such a research seems to be investigation of groundwater and surface water chemical composition. This paper is a case study of survey led in szymbarskie hills of the Kashubian Lake District (northern Poland). The groundwater and surface water quality was determined and analyzed with respect to conditions of groundwater circulation. The obtained results may contribute to development of groundwater investigations in young glacial areas.

Presented is an attempt to correlate the Ordovician formal lithostratigraphic units of the Biłgoraj-Narol area with their counterparts in the adjacent regions of the marginal zone of the East European Craton in the territories of Poland and Ukraine. The comparison embraces profiles of 8 structural units representing various palaeogeographical environments, with different structure and facies. They differ in degree of drilling status as well. In the area of Poland these are: the Baltic Basin, the Łysogóry Unit of the Holy Cross Mts and the Lublin area.
