Opis:
Using the location data of landslides and information on geo-environmental conditions, the landslide susceptibility in Poland was calculated using statistical methods. It shows that 15% of the country’s area is susceptible to landslides. The greatest threats occur in the Carpathians and in many regions of the Sudetes, uplands and in the riverbanks. The most vulnerable areas are the slopes in the range of 9-30°, which are built by the flysch sediments in the faulted zones. The areas susceptible to landslides include over a million buildings and about 7,000 km of roads.

This paper presents the results of analysis of landslides distribution in the Sudetes (SW Poland). Our study was based on the analysis of the LiDAR-data digital elevation model and integrated with investigations of different factors for landslide development. The results of the study showed relationships between the spatial distribution of landslides and geology of their basement. For the areas built by Permo-Mesozoic and late Variscan sedimentary and volcanogenic rocks, the tectonic and lithological factors are predominant for landslide occurrences. The largest landslides have a tectonic affinity and represent a frontal type of geometry. The relationships between geological conditions and mass movements were also confirmed by the constructed landslide susceptibility map of the Sudetes.

Opis:
Starting from 2011, landslides in Łaski over the Żywieckie lake and in Piaski-Drużków over the Czchowskie Lake have been included into the landslide monitoring program as a part of the SOPO project of PGI-NRI. Both landslides present a real hazard to hydrotechnical constructions. In 2018 the monitoring has been extended for the Łaski landslide including the on-line component. The article presents the subsurface and surface monitoring systems and discusses the results of over 7-years observations. In both discussed cases, the landslides have long, multi-stage history. The measurement data show that, their activity has decreased since the activation impulse in 2010. However, they remain active, especially on the deep slip surfaces. High porosity and, consequently, rapid changes in the groundwater level and rainfall intensity confirm the unstable nature of these landforms. This also confirms that the possibility of further activation or sudden landslide descent into water reservoirs is still a real hazard.

Opis:
Geohazards are defined as extreme events which occur in the lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. In Poland, landslides and earthquakes are the most dangerous for human activities. Currently, the number of recognized landslides is estimated at about 58,000. The largest damages of buildings and other infrastructures are registered in the years of 2000-2001 and 2010, which were caused by a high amount of rainfall in the spring-summer period. In an attempt to prevent localization of new facilities on danger zones, cataloguing of landslides has been made. Moreover, perilous objects are monitored with different methods. Another threat is earthquakes, observed in southern Poland, along the Teisseyre-Tronquist Zone, which cause damage of buildings. Apart from earthquakes of tectonic origin, equally hazardous are movements that cause deformation of the earth ’s surface, triggered by mining exploitation.

Opis:
Geological hazards caused by landslides, earthquakes, erosion, land surface deformation and collapse in 2021 in Poland were among the average compared to recent years. They did, however, affect material losses. The Polish Geological Survey (PGS) recorded 41 events related to sudden landslide activations, which damaged or destroyed 17 road sections. Through ongoing monitoring of 72 landslides, 33 were shown to be active. In 2021, more than 5,200 landslides were identified and inventoried in Poland. Geodynamic monitoring performed by PGS recorded 611 seismic events in Poland, whose magnitudes reached M4.2. In addition, using satellite radar interferometry, continuation of land surface deformations was found mainly in mining areas. In 2021, there was a number of collapses of various origins. The paper is a brief report on the ongoing tasks of the Polish Geological Survey in the field of geological hazards and presents events that took place in Poland in 2021.

Opis:
The paper presents preliminary results of possible application of SAR interferometry in the studies of landslides. Two areas have been selected: Wieliczka and Nowy Sącz. The application of InSAR (SAR Interferometry) in the Carpathians is difficult due to rough topography, vegetation and long season with the snow cover. Such problems may be overridden by applying PSInSAR (Persistent Scatterers SAR Interferometry) which utilizes long time series of the SAR data. PSInSAR was used for both areas. Obtained sets of PS points show evidence of the landslide movement. The most reliable points were then used in quantitative cartographic study to qualify activity of slopes. Analysis of landslide dynamics was performed for the area of Wieliczka where, for instance, a landslide velocity movement in Lednica Górna reaches 74.8 mm/yr. The preliminary results are very promising for the development of PSInSAR methodology in the study of landslides in Poland.

Opis:
In laser ablation (LA) a very little amount of solid material is transferred to the gas phase followed by its transport to the source of excitation. The coupling of laser ablation with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and mass analyzer (MS) allows direct determination of elemental composition of solids. In the case of congested solid samples, LA ICPMS makes possible analysis of element distribution in surface and sub-surface domains of a sample. Unfortunately, not all solid substances appear in congested form as sometimes an analyst receives solid samples in a form of powder. The number of papers related to the possibilities of quantitative analysis of disintegrated samples has been increasing during last years. However, direct analysis of powders, such as soils, sediments or dust, is not possible. Thus the initial step in preparation of such samples is their immobilization in support base, which enables analysis of material of interest without changing sample properties. In this article the possibilities of analysis of immobilized powder samples using ablation process are presented. Homogeneity of powder deposition, purity of material and quality of the ablation process are important parameters and may be used as criteria. Correctness of material selection has to be always confirmed with chosen reference materials. The procedure allowing uniform and reproducible immobilisation of bottom sediment as well as a calibration measurement system with the use of external standards with similar matrix as samples are presented.

The main objective of the presented analysis was to investigate to what extent even minor changes in the hydrological and hydrogeological environment affect the changes in the dynamics of landslide surface displacement. The research was carried out for selected monitored landslides, which, in addition to the in-depth monitoring devices, were equipped with corner reflectors suitable for satellite radar interferometry measurements. The high temporal resolution of the interferometric data allowed demonstrating the existence of a relationship between the speed of surface movements and slight changes in the depth to the groundwater table. The analyses were performed for five landslides, which also showed a high dependence of these compounds on the geological structure of the landslide and its substrate.

Opis:
The strong terrain surface changes in Knurów town, Upper Silesian Coal Basin, are caused by underground exploitation of hard coal. Based on Digital Terrain Models (DEM), constructed from archival and modern topographic maps, the 18 metres of lowering due to subsidence and 25 m of relative uplift have been recorded. The relative uplift was observed at recent mine-waste storages and was identified as the effect of waste dumping. The map of surface changes was compared with geological maps and maps of underground mining to explain the spatial distribution of subsidence. The presented analysis shows the effectiveness of the applied GIS approach to evaluate the anthropogenic impact on the terrain surface. SAR interferometry plays a very important role as an independent tool, which allows to effectively map the recent ground movements.

The potentials of application of the data derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS) in the context of an inventory of landslides has been presented. The ALS data used in this study covers the area of 40 km2 on the eastern side of Lake Roznowskie in the Carpathians. Scanning data were acquired on April 1, 2010, and the resulting cloud of points was used as the basis to generate the DTM with a resolution of 0,5 m. Geological interpretation of the data was conducted on the example of the largest and complex landslides in the study area located in the village Zbyszyce. Using different visualization techniques were able to determine extent of landslides and its internal morphological elements. Attempts to determine the degree of activity in different zones of the landslide have been also undertaken. Very good results were obtained in wooded areas, complementing the state of knowledge about this landslide.

Opis:
The paper presents the history and latest achievements in landslide research at the Polish Geological Institute (PGI). Since the establishment of PGI in 1919, landslides have been investigated during geological mapping in the Carpathians and considered by engineering geologists. After the 2nd World War, the importance of landslide research becomes more and more important following each landslide catastrophic event. Since 2008, the research on landslide and mass movements has been carried out systematically at the PGI within the SOPO (Landslide Counteracting System) project framework. Since that time, the SOPO project has been developing from landslide mapping and recording into a large spatial database, a sophisticated monitoring system (including on-line data acquisition) and susceptibility analysis, and early warnings with prediction capabilities. SOPO plays an important role to local and national administration. Together with the legal component, it allows defining a strategy for landslide risk reduction in Poland. Recently, landslide research plays so important role at the PGI that a special department, called Geohazard Center, has been established within the PGI organizational structure.

The paper presents the geological interpretation of Airborne Laser Scanning data of Kasprowy Wierch Mt. area. The analyzed points cloud data represent the ground surface after removal of the land cover (primarily vegetation) objects. The ALS data were characterized by very high density, presenting even minor terrain forms, very difficult to identify in forested and mountain dwarfpine areas as well. The resulting image of detailed geomorphology of the study area was compared with existing maps at scale of 1 : 10 000 and literature data. This allowed verifying the extent of geological units of basement rocks and shed new light on existing opinions on the genesis of glacial sediments. An extensive landslide has been identified on the eastern slopes of Sucha Czuba Mt. The landslide has not been reported in the literature so far. Application of laser scanning data was extremely useful and allowed making new observations that enrich the existing knowledge about the geology of this part of the Tatra Mts.
