Opis:
Over the last fifty years the Department of Publications has conducted its statutory tasks, publishing a range of cartographic and text contributions. During all these years, serial maps, geological-tourist maps, guides and atlases have been published. The Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute is the publisher of the leading Polish journals: English-language Geological Quarterly (listed in the Journal Citation Reports database) and Polish-language monthly Przegląd Geologiczny, as well as the co-publisher of the annual Volumina Jurassica. In addition to these important journals, there is a number ofpublishing series, such as: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego, Prace Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego, Polish Geological Institute Special Papers, and Profile Głębokich Otworów Wiertniczych. Apartfrom the publications issued on a regular basis, the Department ofPublications also publishes books from the series Wokół Geologii, conference and informational materials, and books for young readers (Nie tylko dinozaury, Sezam Polski). Despite the huge amount of tasks, the Department of Publications is constantly trying to improve the substantive and technical level of its works so that the publications of the Polish Geological Institute will always be at the world’s highest level.

Opis:
Publication activities have played an important role in the life of the Polish Geological Institute (PGI) since its foundation in 1919. In 1919 the first geological map and in 1920 the first text publication were put out whereas in 1921 the first series appeared that has been issued till today: Transactions of the PGI (Prace Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego). In 1938, the series Bulletin of the PGI (Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego), and in 1957 the Geological Quarterly, the flag journal of the PGI, were initiated. Their first mission was to disseminate results of studies conducted by the PGI scientists, but since 1999 the Geological Quarterly has been a truly international journal. The PGI co-edits two other international journals (Geologica Carpathica, Volumina Jurasica) and since 1992 has been a publisher of the most popular Polish geological journal, Przegląd Geologiczny. This journal was established in 1953, but the first publisher was Wydawnictwa Geologiczne that stem from the PGI in 1953, and finally in 2000 all publication activities returned to the PGI. In addition, a range of various books has been published, including a monumental scientific synthesis entitled Geology of Poland that was initiated in 1963; its first part was published in 1968 and the last one in 2004 (altogether 25 parts in six volumes). After World War II, one of the top priorities of the PGI was to elaborate various synthetic, detailed and special maps as well as atlases, and this activity, which otherwise is the proof of the notable increase of our knowledge on the geology of Poland, belongs to the great achievements of the PGI. Within a century, about 15,000 geological maps were published. Since the last decade, a number of publications dealing with various tasks of the Polish geological survey and the Polish hydrogeological survey has distinctly been increased

Opis:
This article attempts to characterize and evaluate the forms and results of cooperation of Polish geologists with geologists and geological institutions in Europe and all around the world. The theoretical achievements of Polish geology are underlined. The participation and contribution of the Polish geologists to the organization of scientific life in the world is widely discussed. Attention is also paid to the participation of Polish geologists in several polar and mountain expeditions. Some Polish geologists - members of international organizations and scientific organizations - were also mentioned.

Opis:
The Polish Geological Institute (PGI) was established in 1919 according to the act of the Polish Parliament. Four departments made up the structure of PGI at that time, and one of them was Department of Hydrology. The first head of this Department was Prof. Dr. Romuald Rosłoński, also the professor of the Lwów Technical University. He is recognized as a founder of the Polish hydrogeological school. The term hydrogeology was used in the Polish literature 120 years ago, but has slowly been implemented in science as a separate research field. In the period of time between the First and Second World War the PGI team of hydrogeologists dealt with groundwater resources and water supply, hydrogeological cartography, groundwater geochemistry and hydraulic properties of rocks hosting aquifers and aquitards, and water balances of drainage basins. Hydrogeology at that time was closely connected with regional geology, tectonics and petrology on the one hand and with mining activity and civil engineering on the other hand. After the World War II in 1949, the Section of Hydrogeology was established as a part of the Geological Institute. In 1953 this was renamed the Department of Hydrogeology, with the authorization for scientific activity. The scope of this activity encompassed regional hydrogeological recognition, cartography, hydrogeology of ore deposits and mining, geophysical logging in hydrogeology and drilling diagnosis. Mathematical modeling of groundwater flow started in this Department with the physical, analog simulation in the late 60s. of the 20th century. Results of the regional investigation of groundwater occurrences and geochemistry were presented in many hydrogeological maps prepared under the guidance of Professor C. Kolago. Groundwater resources were estimated both in the regions and the whole country by the team led by Professor B. Paczyński as a head and an editor. The brines, mineralized and thermal groundwaters were identified by this Department in close cooperation with branches of the PGI under direction of B. Paczyński, Z. Płochniewski and J. Dowgiałło from the Polish Academy of Sciences. The alteration and rise of the hydrogeological studies in the PGI took place at the beginning of 2000 due to the twin projects resulted from Poland’s accession to the European Union. There was little time for the EU directives implementation, especially for Water framework directive (FWD) and integrated water resources management to be introduced in practice. To meet these needs, the state hydrogeological survey (SHS) was organized in the PGI. This survey has been established according to Water Law Act from July 18 of 2001. The SHS imposed new duties resulting from the EU Groundwater Directive (2006/118/EU) on the protection of groundwater against pollution and deterioration (Official Journal UE, L 372 from 27.12.2006). There are legal, organizational and research tasks within the monitoring network and water management planning projects, which projects that belong to duties of the SHS. The main tasks of this survey include: groundwater monitoring organization and control and quality and geochemistry control of groundwater resources within groundwater bodies, gathering of hydrogeological data in data banks, analysis of current data and forecast elaboration, documentation of groundwater resources, publication of maps, guidebooks etc. This is the current activity of the hydrogeological team of the Polish Geological Institute.

Opis:
Characterizing the beginnings and then the development of scientific staff in Poland during 1918-1939, the role and importance of the social environment associated with geological sciences is presented. Of about 4.4 thousand scientists working at the end of the Second Polish Republic, there were almost 200 geologists who carried out studies on the geological structure of Polish lands. Some of them conducted geological research for documenting raw material deposits. Geological sciences were developed mainly at the Polish Geological Institute, at the universities of Warsaw, Cracow, Lwów, Poznań and Vilnius, and at the Geological Station in Borysław.
