Opis:
In 2018 the Łuków commune in southern Podlasie became enriched by eight small lapidaries as a result of local self-government initiative. They play a didactic and aesthetic function of biker-friendly spaces along bicyce routes. The article discusses 25 erratic boulders, indicating their Scandinavian provenance and micro-morphology features that are a record ofenvironments in which the erratic boulders were staying during their transport. A special attention has been given to the geotourist significance of these stone objects.

In western and central parts of the Podlasie-Lublin Basin, Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian mixed siliciclastic-carbonate section is dominated by fine-grained sediments (claystones, mudstones), which are passing into more carbonaceous ones towards the east. In this region, subsidence was controlled by flexural bending of the East European Craton margin. Sedimentological analysis of drill cores revealed that deposition of those fine-grained sediments originated from suspension and traction currents. Amount of oxygen plays important role in the rock record (Fig. 1) whereas occurrence of pyrite is significant for determinations of sedimentary conditionsion, also in terms of sea level changes (Fig. 2). The rocks display abundant sedimentological structures such as current ripples, wave ripples, hummocky cross-stratification (HCS), graded beds, water escape structures, soft sediment deformation and scours (Fig. 3). The rocks are also characterized by predominance of wave ripples, common scours, graded beds and soft sediment deformations whereas current ripples, water escape structures and HCS are rather rare. The most frequent of the ichnofacies elements include unlined, rarely branched Planolites, which represent Scolithos, Cruziana and Zoophycus ichnofacies. The size of elements of Planolites ichnofacies appears dependent on environmental conditions and ranges from 0.5 mm to 15 mm. Chondrites, Anconichnus, Helminthopsis and Teichichnus, very important environment indicators, are present but not that common (Fig. 4). Textural analyses along with the records of diagenetic features made it possible to distinguish a succession of stratigraphic parasequences (Fig. 5). Early carbonate cementation appeared important, especially in the case of suble or invisible changes in grain size. On the basis of the obtained results, depositional environment of fined-grained sediments in the Podlasie-Lublin Basin was interpreted as a wave-dominated shelf with turbidite episodes. Detailed sedimentological observations are crucial for definiting facies types and prediction of their distribution, but also for tracing the most organic-rich units in the sedimentological profile, as the basic in terms of gas shale prospects. Apparently monotonous fine-grained sediments (claystones and mudstones) are shown to be in fact miscellaneous.

Opis:
The intensive development of studies on the crystalline basement of the Polish part of the East European Platform started only in the mid-1950s. These studies were based on geophysical research that preceded planned deep drilling projects. Twenty-five drill holes were located along four sections called: Białowieża, Kruszyniany, Sokółka and Krasnopol. The aim of this article is to re-evaluate drilling materials in the light of a variety of data, mainly structural data obtained from 20 boreholes from the first three "drilling sections”. All these sections were located on the Belarus-Lithuanian Elevation where the crystalline basement occurs at the shallowest depths. Special attention was paid to the recognition of ductile shear zones, SM foliation, LM mineral lineation and kinematic indicators. The results of the studies made it possible to identify the direction of tectonic transport, mainly with the top-to-SW, S and W, and deformation regimes in the boreholes of the Podlasie Belt. The main deformations have been related to a compressional regime in the amphibolite and granulite facies of regional metamorphism during the Svecofennian orogeny. It is suggested for the future to combine the research efforts of specialists from different fields of geological sciences. However, due to the scarcity of core material from old drillings, the most important are new deep boreholes that will provide a lot of drilling material to explain the geological structure and the evolution of the Proterozoic basement of NE Poland.

Sequence stratigraphy approach has been applied for the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian sedimentary fill of the Lublin–Podlasie Basin; the main goal of the study is to discriminate between eustatic and tectonic control of the observed sequence development. The Neoproterozoic and Cambrian sedimentary fill of the Lublin–Podlasie Basin is subdivided here into two second-order depositional sequences, separated by a basin-wide unconformity. The lower sequence A is poorly recognised. It is presumably of the early Neoproterozoic age, and is characterized by continental to costal shallow marine developments. Sequence B comprises the (late?) Neoproterozoic to Middle Cambrian. The lowermost part of the sequence B is composed of a lowstand systems tract (LST). At that time a low relative sea level was con-trolled by regional thermal doming, followed by rapid clastic and volcanogenic deposition, with rate exceeding that of subsidence of extensional grabens. During the latest Ediacaran, a transgressive systems tract I (TST I) developed. Increase of the rate of relative sea level rise was induced by a transition from syn-rift to post-rift subsidence. During the development of a following highstand systems tract I (HST I), significant sediment supply exceeded the rate of basement subsidence, causing progradation of shoreline. The next higher up-section transgressive system tract (TST II) is characterized by a gradual rela-tive sea level increase and reflects continued thermal sag phase of the Lublin–Podlasie Basin. Development of the TST II was coeval with a global transgression and controlled mainly by eustatic sea level rise. The beginning of the Middle Cambrian corresponds to the development of a HST II, controlled by a low rate of increase of the relative sea level, even if it was coeval in time with the Hawke Bay regression. The HST II is therefore interpreted here as controlled by local tectonic processes, superimposed on continued post-rift thermal subsidence of the passive margin.

In the present contribution we examine possible role of deposits of the Białopole, Lublin, Włodawa and Mazowsze Forma-tions (uppermost Ediacaran to lowermost Cambrian), as well as their presumed lateral equivalents, developed in the Lublin-Podlasie region as a potential source rock for hydrocarbons. The analysed sediments contain marine kerogen of algal and cyanobacterial ori-gin, i.e., predominantly oil prone. In some parts of the analysed area recent TOC could reach 0.65%, however, primary TOC could be significantly higher, as it is indicated by relatively high maturity of the hydrocarbons. Quality of potential source rock increases towards SW. The analysed potential source rock could be, at least partly, responsible for oil and gas shows, commonly observed in the Lower and Middle Cambrian sandstone horizons.

Opis:
The traditional approach in photogrammetric studies relies mainly on the analysis of topographic maps, supported by geological and geomorphological field mapping. This paper presents an application of the modern method of three-dimensional earth imaging – Airborne Laser Scanning. The major advantage of this method is the filtering procedure, which allows to removing vegetation and other objects from the analysed surface, resulting in more precise terrain model. We used aerial photographs for preparation of two photogrammetric digital terrain models (DTMs), which were subsequently compared to evaluate dynamic properties of landslide areas. The difference between gratings within digital models was used to determine horizontal shifts in the area of landslide. The discrepancy presented observed in the shaded relief image characterises positive elevations (erosion) shown in reddish colour, and negative ones (accumulation) displayed in bluish. The maximum scarp retreat driven by landsliding processes reached 17 m during the last 53 years, with ca. 562 m3 of accumulated colluvium.

The paper presents a sedimentological analysis of Ordovician (Sandbian–Hirnantian = Caradoc–Ashgill) and Silurian (Landovery–Wenlock, lower Ludlow) claystones and mudstones from the north-eastern (Baltic Basin) and south-eastern (Podlasie-Lublin Basin) parts of the East European Craton. In both basins, formations prospective for shale gas/oil were analyzed: the Sasino Fm., Pasłęk Fm. (including the Jantar Mb.), Pelplin Fm., Udal Fm., Wrotnów Fm. and Terespol Fm. Based on lithological and sedimentological criteria, 34 lithofacies and 11 lithofacies associations have been distinguished. The most promising lithofacies arerepresentedbytheL-1,L-3andL-4associationswhicharecharacterizedbydarkgreycolour, a very low degree or lack of bioturbation, rare sedimentary structures, and common content of small pyrite concretions. They dominate in the Sasino Fm., Pas³êk Fm. (in the Jantar Mb. only) and Pelplin Fm., but are much less common in the Udal Fm., Terespol Fm. and Pas³êk Fm. (excluding the Jantar Mb.).

The Lower Palaeozoic basin at the western slope of the East European Craton (EEC) (Fig. 1) is currently recognized as one of the most interesting areas for shale gas exploration in Europe. The Upper Ordovician and/or Lower Silurian graptolitic shale is here the major potential reservoir formation (Figs. 2, 3) (Poprawa & Kiersnowski, 2008; Poprawa, 2009). Moreover, the Upper Cambrian to Tremadocian Alum shale is an additional target locally in the northern part of the Baltic Basin. These sediments are often rich in organic matter (Klimuszko, 2002; Poprawa & Kiersnowski, 2008; Więcław et al., 2010; Skręt & Fabiańska, 2009), as well as silica. Limited data from two wells in the western part of the Baltic Basin show silica contents up to 60-70% (Fig. 4) (Krzemiński & Poprawa, 2006). The advantage of the Lower Palaeozoic shale from the western slope of EEC is its broad lateral extend (Fig. 1) and relatively quiet tectonic setting. The later is particularly true in the case of the Baltic Basin and Podlasie Depression. Structural development becomes to some extent more complex in the case of the Lublin region, where the Lower Palaeozoic shale appears affected by late Famennian to early Visean block tectonics. Development of the organic rich Lower Palaeozoic shale at the western slope of EEC was controlled by several factors. Very important was here the rate of non-organic detritus deposition (Fig. 5). The other factors included organic productivity of the basin, its subsidence, relative sea level changes, basin bathymetry, geochemical conditions at the sea bottom (especially oxygenation), degree of bioturbation, presence of topographic barriers at the sea bottom, leading to development of isolated anoxic zones, sea currents configuration, and climate changes. Organic matter of the Lower Palaeozoic is characterized by presence of II type of kerogen. Appearance of the organic-rich shale within the Lower Palaeozoic section at the western slope of the EEC is diachronic (Fig. 6). From NW towards east and SE, the intervals richest in organic appear related to systematically younger strata, starting from the Upper Cambrian to Tremadocian, as well as the Upper Llanvirn and Caradoc in the Łeba Elevation (northern onshore Baltic Basin; Fig. 7). In central parts of the Baltic Basin and Podlasie Depression as well as NW part of the Lublin region, the intervals richest in organic matter are found in the Llandovery section, while in the eastern part of the Baltic Basin and SE part of the Lublin region the highest TOC contents are found in the Wenlock. Therefore, depending on location at the western slope of EEC, different formations are recognized as the targets for shale gas exploration. The Upper Cambrian to Tremadocian shale, present only in the northern part of the Baltic Basin, is characterized by very high contents of organic matter, with average value for individual sections usually ranging from 3 to 12% TOC. This shale formation is, however, of very limited thickness, not higher than several meters in the onshore part of the basin (Szymański, 2008; Więcław et al., 2010). In onshore part of the studied area, thickness of the Caradoc shale changes from a few meters up to more than 50 m (Modliński & Szymański, 1997, 2008). Contents of organic matter in these sediments are the highest in the Łeba Elevation zone and the basement of the Płock-Warszawa trough, where average TOC contents in individual well sections range from 1% to nearly 4%. Ashgill rocks are characterized by high TOC contents only in the Łeba Elevation zone, where average TOC values for individual well sections rise up to 4,5% at the most. Llandovery shale has high TOC contents, particularly in its lower part, throughout vast parts of the western slope of EEC. The maximum measured TOC contents in those rocks in Podlasie Depression are nearly 20%. Average TOC values for individual sections of the Llandovery are usually equal 1% do 2,5%, except for the Podlasie Depression, where they may reach as much as 6%. Thickness of the Llandovery shale generally increases from east to west to approximately 70 m at the most. However, in the major part of that area it ranges from 20 to 40 m (Modliński et al., 2006). Thickness of theWenlock sediments is also highly variable laterally, from less than 100 m in SE part of the Lublin region to over 1000 m in western part of the Baltic Basin. Average content of organic matter in individualWenlock sections in central and western parts of the Baltic Basin and the Podlasie Depression usually ranges from 0,5% to 1,3% TOC. In the eastern part of the Baltic Basin and in the Lublin region it is higher, rising to about 1-1,7% TOC. The above mentioned TOC values show the present day content of organic matter, which is lower than the primary one. The difference between the present and primary TOC contents increases along with increasing thermal maturity. It is also highly dependant on genetic type of kerogen. Taking into account the II type of kerogen from the analyzed sediments, it may be stated that in the zones located in the gas window the primary TOC was at least one-half greater than indicated by laboratory measurements. From the shale gas point of view, the basins at the western slope of EEC are characterized by a negative relation between depth at present day burial and thermal maturity (Poprawa & Kiersnowski, 2008). In the zones with burial depth small enough to keep exploration costs at very low level (Fig. 8), thermal maturity of shales is too low for gas generation (Figs. 9, 12a). Maturity increases westwards (Fig. 8) along with depth of burial (Fig. 9). Thus, the potential shale gas accumulations in the western part of the studied area occur at depths too high for commercial gas exploration and exploitation (Fig. 12b). Between of the zone of maturity too low for shale gas development and that where depth of burial is too large for its exploration, there occurs a broad zone of the Lower Palaeozoic shale with increased shale gas exploration potential (Fig. 13) (Poprawa & Kiersnowski, 2008; Poprawa, 2009). In that area, there are shale intervals of relatively high thickness and average TOC exceeding 1-2% TOC (Fig. 7, 10, 12c). Thermal maturity of these rocks appears sufficient for generation of gas (Fig. 9, 10), and results of well tests for deeper-seated conventional reservoirs suggest good quality of dry gas with no nitrogen (Fig. 12c). It should be noted that some gas shows have been recorded in the Lower Palaeozoic shale. Moreover, depth of burial is not too large for commercial shale gas exploration (Fig. 8, 10). Hydrocarbon shows and their composition in the Lower Palaeozoic are strictly related to thermal maturity of the source rock. In the zones of low maturity, these are almost exclusively oil shows documented. Further westwards, in the zone transitional to the gas window area, gas is wet and contains significant contribution of hydrocarbon gases higher than methane.Within the gas window zone, the records are almost exclusively limited to methane shows. Moreover, within the zones of low maturity high nitrogen contents were recorded (Poprawa, 2009). In the zones characterized by thermal maturity in the range from 0,8 to 1,1% Ro and very high TOC contents (over 15% at the most), there is a potential for oil shale exploration. The zones with the highest oil shale potential include eastern Baltic Basin in SW Lithuania and NE part of the Podlasie Depression. Some data necessary for entirely firm estimations of potential shale gas resources of the Lower Palaeozoic complex in Poland are still missing. However, preliminary estimates indicate that these shale gas resources may possibly be classified as gigantic (1,400-3,000 bln m3 of recoverable gas; Fig. 15). For comparison, resources of conventional gas in Poland are equal to 140,5 bln m exp.3, and annual domestic gas consumption is at the level of 14 bln m exp. 3. However, it should be noted that some characteristics of the Lower Palaeozoic complexes indicate increased exploration risk. The average TOC contents are here lower than in classic examples of gas shales, like e.g. Barnett shale. Moreover, in the zone of optimal burial depth (less than 3000–3500 m) thermal maturity is lower than in the case of the Barnett shale core area. An important risk factor is also both a limited amount and limited resources of conventional gas fields in the Lower Palaeozoic complex (Fig. 13). Amount and intensity of gas shows in the Lower Palaeozoic shale are also relatively low, and there is no evidences for presence of overpressure in this complex. In the eastern part of western slope of the EEC, there appears an additional risk factor-arelatively high content of nitrogen in gas.

The upper Cambrian-Silurian Piaœnica, Sasino, Udal and Pelplin formations and the Jantar Member include the most organic-rich lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in the Baltic-Podlasie-Lublin Basin in Poland. These rocks vary significantly in terms of vertical and lateral organic matter distribution. Generally, the siltstones, mudstones, claystones and shales are characterized by TOC values from 0.1 to as much as 17.4 wt. %. Typically, the maximum TOCvaluesreachabout9wt.%.Rock-Eval,organicmatterpetrologyandbiomarkersdataclearly indicate dominance of type II kerogen. Thermal maturity of organic matter of these rocks is variable and depends mainly on the burial history and depth. In the western slope of the East-European Craton the petroleum prospective formations are located throughout the whole spectrum of thermal maturity zones, from the immature zone (eastern margin of the formations occurrence), through the oil, condensate and gas windows, to the overmature zone dominated by exhausted source rocks in the western margins of the study area.

Opis:
Władysław Szajnocha (1857-1928), Polish geologist and palaeontologist, graduated from the University of Vienna and the Vienna Technische Hochschule. He was a researcher in the geology of the Carpathians, co-author of the Geological Atlas of Galicia, researcher of Jurassic brachiopods of the Balin Oolite and the Eastern Carpathians, and author of books on mineral deposits and mineral springs of Galicia. As a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow he created a significant research centre called the “Cracow geological school”. He was the initiator and co-organizer of the Mining Academy in Cracow in 1919 (currently the AGH University of Science and Technology), and the Polish Geological Society in 1922, being its first President. Jan Nowak (1880-1940), graduated from the University of Lviv, professor at the Jagiellonian University in Cracov. Researcher of the geology of the Carpathians and petroleum geology. He was the creator of the original concept of tectogenesis of the Carpathian flysch belt. Jan Nowak conducted geological research in the Polish Lowlands and created the first synthetic monograph on the tectonics of Poland. He worked on the palaeontology of Upper Cretaceous cephalopods, their systematics and phylogeny. He was imprisoned in a German concentration camp and died shortly after being released. Marian Książkiewicz (1906-1981) graduated from the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and professor at this university. Researcher of the Carpathians and Carpathian flysch, creator of the “Polish sedimentological school” and the world's first palaeogeographic reconstructions of flysch basins. He was involved in ichnology and developed a rich collection and a monograph on organic hieroglyphs occurring in the Carpathian flysch sediments, being a work of worldwide significance. He authored a tectonic synthesis of the Polish Carpathians.

Opis:
The paper provides issues concerning dispersed organic matter in the lower Palaeozoic deposits of the Baltic and Podlasie-Lublin areas: its composition, genetic types, and thermal maturity degree. Organic matter in these rocks is represented by vitrinite-like material showing optical characteristics of vitrinite (bitumen/solid bitumens), phytoclasts and zooclasts (graptolite fragments). The UV light analysis commonly reveals a significant content of macerals from the liptinite group, represented mainly by well-preserved algae and alginite. The concentrations of organic matter varies from trace to 10% (Baltic area), and from trace to 9.20% (Podlasie Lublin area).The degree of thermal maturity of the Cambrian-Silurian deposits corresponds to the “oil and gas window”, with the average values of vitrinite-like reflectance index ranging from 0.52 to 2.03% Ro (Baltic area) and 0.75–2.09% Ro (Podlasie-Lublin area).

The paper presents the characteristics of prospective zones identified for the first time within the lower Palaeozoic shale formations occurring in the Baltic-Podlasie-Lublin Basin and within the Carboniferous shale, sandstone, and mixed shale-sandstone complexes (the so-called hybrid complexes) in the basin of south-western Poland. The lateral and vertical ranges of these zones are determined based on specific criteria using the results of various research methods and analyses, i.e.: stratigraphic, sedimentological, mineralogical, petrological and geochemical of organic matter, petrographic and petrophysical, including interpretation of well logs. Archived geological materials and those coming from the boreholes drilled recently in the concession areas were also used. Four prospective zones have been distinguished in the lower Palaeozoic of the so-called shale belt: SP1, SP2, SP3 and SP4. The most prospective area for the occurrence of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits in shale formations is the Baltic region – the Łeba Elevation, where there are all four perspective zones, only partially covering the range of potentially prospective formations. In each of these zones, both liquid and gas hydrocarbons can be expected in this area. Due to the low percentage of organic matter, the lowest hydrocarbon generation potential is attributed to the Lublin region. However, the low values of this parameter are compensated by other parameters, i.e. the considerable thickness and lateral extent of zone SP4 corresponding partly to the Pelplin Formation. In the Carboniferous rocks of south-western Poland, seven prospective zones have been distinguished in four borehole sections. Four of them are “tight” zones in compact sandstones, while the other three zones represent a hybrid type in complexes with mixed lithology. No prospective zones have been defined in complexes with homogeneous shale lithologies. Determination of lateral extents of the identified zones has not been possible due to the scarcity of data on the geological structure and stratigraphy of the Carboniferous succession in the study area
