Opis:
The paper presents the results of an educational research project implemented in the school year 2016/2017 in selected primary schools in urban environment (Łódź). The aim of the study was to diagnose oppositional discursive strategies (initial opposition movements, relationships between partners, reaching agreement), in a group of thirty 8- to 9-year-olds and 9- to 10-year-olds. The research was conducted in a place that provides children with natural play conditions (school common room). The investigator appeared in the role participant as an observer (the researcher came from the examined environment and had the opportunity to “blend into” the events). The material came from participant observation. The observation embraced practical and socio-cognitive activity of the pupils. The results enables recognition of cognitive-social and communicative-interactive competences of the child. In none of the observed opposition episodes physical violence was applied to the interlocutor (only in a few cases children continued to dispute). In the process of reaching agreement in disputable situations, the children focused on agreeing on conflicting behaviours, opinions or views without an adult intermediary (despite the fact that children did not always reach an immediate agreement in the disputed situation).

Opis:
This article demonstrates the results of the educational project “stimulating children’s thinking” carried out in some primary schools in a metropolitan environment (Lodz, Poland). The aim of the study was to identify the ways of understanding the concept of community by 9–10-year old children. In the didactical intervention operations designed, the research data came from participated observation, focus interview, and children’s production analysis (graphical visualization, pairedassociate learning tasks and tests of unfinished tasks). Based on my research, I see the need for triggering the cognitive activity of pupils in conditions that ensure the development of conceptual systems. Moreover, the findings suggest the need of broader understanding of educational environments in Polish educational culture.

Opis:
In this article, I am going to discuss the issues of triggering children’s understanding of natural concepts (on the example of the concept of time) in a cultural context. I was particularly interested in the resources provided by culture to help children understand natural concepts. In the research, I applied the basic types of procedures for collecting qualitative data: observation (observer-as-participant), interview (direct, personal, focused), documents (children’s products) and audiovisual materials (audio and video recordings). The didactic intervention activity was conducted in two second grade and two third grade classes in primary schools in metropolitan environment. The reconstruction of the children’s understanding of the concept of natural time revealed its complexity. For children there is not one time, but many dimensions of time entered in two profiles: physical time (clock) and psychological time (time of memories and perceptions). Based on my research, I see the need for triggering the cognitive activity of pupils in conditions that ensure the development of conceptual systems containing both matrix concepts and natural notions.

Opis:
Reflecting on the understanding of the world from the perspective of children is significant for several reasons. First, it allows us to examine the kind of thinking and actions of children which is of an interpretative nature: it reveals not only the child’s personal knowledge, but above all, the ways of understanding, categorising and evaluating an ambiguous and often conflicted reality. It also provides an opportunity to reconstruct the cognitive skills manifested in the verbal and non-verbal reactions of children put in front of an organised problematic situation. In view of such a conclusion, it is worth taking the time to analyse the complex problem: how children perceive the world and how to reconstruct in practice children’s processes associated with understanding, categorising, and evaluating the world.

Opis:
The goal of this paper is to determine the areas of inefficiency of educational influences in the field of Polish language education in teaching early primary school children. Three areas require a fundamental change: language training focused on the implementation of the knowledge of the language structure, training the skills of written expression, and developing attitudes that make up the culture of being in a diverse information environment. Showing omissions of school in these three areas, the paper presents a project of language education oriented not towards familiarizing a child with the knowledge of the language structure, but towards portraying the nature of language, i.e., taking interest in how a child, while applying language, marks its being in the world, how it acts via language, how it uses language to reach the mysteries of the world and what it does with language during this operation. The final comments suggest that school is there to help a child to interpret the world, to recognize various phenomena, to assume attitudes towards them, and to make their independent evaluation.

Opis:
The article presents the results of research carried out under the Innovation Incubator 2.0 project in the 2018/2019 school year in a selected kindergarten, in a metropolitan environment (Łódź). All the project activities involved the implementation of three areas: first, constructing the program assumptions of the ‘Two Languages – One Way’ project and analyzing the educational market, and second, developing a cultural ‘toolkit’ (Bruner 2006: 35) in the form of demonstration charts and methodological aids, thirdly, testing the final product “Two Languages – One Way” by the teacher of glottodidactics. The research adopted a strategy for a didactic intervention. The researcher acted as an observer as a participant, and the material came from participant observation. The observation focused on interventions initiated according to their design. The observation covered student activities, as well as the effects of these activities. Research results reconstructed children’s skills in identifying sounds and letters as well as reading by slipping from sound to sound.

Our aim throughout the contribution was to systemize perspectives employed by the researchers in the studies of educational discourse. Three perspectives of empirical insight into educational discourses were reconstructed in the course of our analysis of selected research examples: optimizing, analytic and critical. The criterion underpinning the analysis was a pragmatic function of the studies. Hence, the links between the choice of research perspective, results of research and practical implications for school improvement were discussed.

Opis:
In presented article we have described examples of children’s strategies for meaning fulfilment in the verbal and visual code. In conducted research, we attempted to reconstruct children’s abilities of conceptualizing objects with (1) prototypical, (2) prototypical and individual features, and (3) nonprototypical features. We were interested also in children’s methods of categorization (recognizing an object at various levels of abstraction) and constructing knowledge in terms of selected domains (appearance, environment, behavior and the relationship between animals and humans). 170 children of two age groups (3/4 and 4/5 years old) participated in the study. They were first asked to recognize an object on the basis of selected features shown in pictures. Then children were interviewed and asked to make a drawing. Research has shown that exposing children to a fragment of an image allows them to recognize the whole object and express their personal knowledge. The presented research showed also that children make conceptualization mainly through personal experiences and that when describing animals, children focus on observable animal activity and behavior, as well as animal appearance, size, the environment of living and the relation with humans.

Opis:
The subject of our study is the positionality of children in the process of urban revitalization. We understand the city as a learning space. From our point of view changes introduced into that space are always interventions into children’s learning processes. In the article we present an empirically based reconstruction of practices of community cultural animations that aim at empowering children’s voice in the processes of revitalization. Konrad Dworakowski’s and Pinokio Theatre’s community cultural animations, realised from 2014 to 2019 in Łódź, offer interesting examples of such practices. Even though we build or argument on the basis of observations collected in Łódź, it can be reliably reflected in discussions on educational issues in urban changes in other post-industrial cities.
