Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie konsekwencji, jakie dla polityki i teorii mają przyjęte przez Marksa założenia. Szczególną uwagę poświęca autor znaczeniu założenia o stałym poziomie potrzeb życiowych klasy robotniczej. W odpowiedzi na braki Kapitału, a także by postawić tezę o nie-neutralności tego założenia, proponuje uwzględnienie własnej zmiennej x, to jest zmiennej oznaczającej stopień separacji klasy robotniczej. Owa zmienna stanowi podstawę autorskiej lektury Kapitału. Tekst jest zapisem wykładu wygłoszonego z okazji otrzymania nagrody Deutscherów za książkę Beyond Capital, w którym autor streszcza przedstawioną w niej koncepcję.
The aim of this article is to present Marx’s assumptions consequences both for the politics and the theory. The relevance of the assumption of a constant standard of workers’ necessities. To fill in the gaps of Marx’s theory and to argue the assumptions’ non-neutrality, the author proposes his own factor – factor x which represents the degree of separation among workers. This factor constitutes a basis for a new reading of Capital. This article is a translation of the Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Memorial Prize Lecture, which was delivered on the occasion of receiving the 2004 Deutscher Prize.

While agreeing with Martin Müller’s intent of filling the gap in contemporary social sciences that the lack of interest in the Global East constitutes, the article engages in polemics withsolution postulated by Müller. The Author argues for a conceptualization of the Global East that would not be based on its essence, but rather on its place in the global division of labor. The “strategic essentialism” postulated by Müller is refuted for three reasons: a reactionary character of identity politics as such, its capture by the Right and doubtful value of socio-cultural identity of most societies of Global East. Instead an alter-universalism is proposed that would be different from the colonial universalism of the West and focused on constructing a common front of progressive--emancipatory struggles.
Zgadzając się z postulowanym przez Martina Müllera uzupełnieniem luki we współczesnych naukach społecznych, jaką stanowi niewielkie zainteresowanie kondycją Globalnego Wschodu, artykuł podejmuje polemikę z zaproponowanym przez niego rozwiązaniem owego problemu. Autor proponuje spojrzenie na Globalny Wschód nie w kategoriach esencjalistycznych, ale poprzez pryzmat jego miejsca w międzynarodowym podziale pracy. „Strategiczny esencjalizm”, za którym opowiada się Müller, jest zdaniem Autora błędny ze względu na trzy związane z nim problemy: reakcyjny charakter polityki tożsamości jako takiej, jej przejęcie przez środowiska prawicowe oraz wątpliwą wartość sporej części rozwiązań społeczno-kulturowych stanowiących historyczną tożsamość społeczeństw Globalnego Wschodu. Zamiast tego tekst proponuje konstrukcję alter-uniwersalizmu, który dystansowałby się od uniwersalizmu kolonialnego Zachodu, koncentrując się na budowie wspólnego frontu walk postępowo-emancypacyjnych.

Tekst podejmuje problem rzekomej bezalternatywności globalnych przemian dla realiów miejskiego życia. Miasto jako naturalnie wspólnotową, „komunistyczną” forma ludzkiego życia i może okazać się obszarem, w którym niezależnie od ogólnych trendów można realizować lewicową, „dospołeczną” politykę. Już istniejące formy szeroko rozumianej władzy mogą skutecznie oddziaływać na miejskie relacje społeczne. Wartości i normy są powszechnie delegowane na miejską materialność, a świadome kształtowanie nawet najdrobniejszych elementów miejskiej przestrzeni ma niepoślednie konsekwencję dla stosunków społecznych. Jeśli po części kryzys polityki jako formy organizacji życia wspólnoty wynika z przemian przestrzennych to można pomyśleć takie kroki, które z powrotem, wychodząc od miejskiej materialności, doprowadzą do odrodzenia politycznych podmiotów. Miasto jest ich realnym miejscem życia i działania i może stać się zarówno zbiorem biologicznych konsumentów jak i na nowo wspólnota polityczną.   Okazuje się wtedy nie tylko obszarem zależnym od światowego kapitalizmu, ale precyzyjnie tym miejscem, gdzie skala zachodzących procesów jest przynajmniej częściowo łatwiejsza do konceptualnego ogarnięcia. Dlatego może stać się punktem wyjścia dla radykalnej polityki demokratycznej.
Essay faces the problem of determinacy of global capitalism processes for the reality of urban political life. The city is naturally communitarian form of human life and seems to be the place where radical pro-community politics could be undertaken. Already existing and operating forms of power could fruitfully influence the city social relations. Values and norms of conduct are broadly delegated on the urban space and materiality, thus conscious shaping of city space has severe consequences for community life. If a crisis of the political partly has its roots in metamorphoses of the cities, then also remedies, rising from the urban materiality and reestablishing political subjects, could be thought. City, as most real place of political life could be either reduced to the aggregate of consumers or reestablished as a political community. Due to this is the place where undesired course of action could be stopped, hence precisely here the radical democratic politics can emerge.

"Stateless socialism‖" is the fourth chapter of Edward Abramowski‘s book Socialism and State. A Contribution to the Critique of Contemporary Socialism. Abramowski, a Polish political philosopher and social theorist, was also one of the founders of the cooperative movement in Poland. Written at the turn of 1903 and 1904 and published in 1904 (Polish Society of Publishers, Lviv) under the alias ―M. A. Czajkowski‖, Socialism and State is one of Abramowski‘s most important works, and is devoted to the philosophical justifications of socialist politics, the subversive character of social facts, and the doctrine of stateless socialism, the realisation of which was, according to Abramowski, the cooperative movement. In opposition to both classical Marxism and the social-democratic trend, which found in the state a tool by which the workers‘ movement would free itself from the chains of capitalism, by taking over, democratizing, and at the same time expanding state institutions, Abramowski proposes a vision of a grassroots revolution of specialised associations. Their ideology does not constitute a political doctrine, but is political practice itself, the domain of the common that allows the masses to create an autonomous subjective experience. Thus, the philosopher presents his concept of class struggle, grasped as a creative element of differentiation of forms of socialisation. This understanding also allows him to define class not as a substantial feature of a political subject, but as a kind of condition or action. He perceives the revolution as a transformation of the subject position in relation to the socio-economic conditions that define it, an ethical change that opens new possibilities for community life in the heart of the ancien regime.

In this article, I focus on the function of the notions of precariousness, vulnerability, and grievability of life in Judith Butler’s writings, and reflect upon their place in a broader context of the thought of what I call, following Jacques Derrida, “originary mourning.” On the one hand, therefore, I want to reconstruct Butler’s task of rethinking the possibi-lity of creating a community based on the equal allocation of precariousness and grievability. Such a reflection allows Butler to treat grievability as an insightful and unique passageway to the problematics of safeguarding of life and equality between living beings. On the other hand, by referring to the writings of Jacques Derrida, I want to inscribe Butler’s notions of precariousness and grievability in a broader framework of mourning, to show how every constitution of a social bond based on the principle of shared precariousness and vulnerability inevitably has to come up against the paradox of its genesis.

This article focuses on the question of the involvement of contemporary artists in the public debate concerning boundary issues relating to migration and the treatment of immigrants. The aim of this essay is to take a closer look at some of their strategies for making the boundary issue more visible and their ability to draw our attention to the situation of excluded minorities, such as “clandestines” and refugees. The object of the study is, in particular, the way in which these artists address the question of the international migration process in the modern “open”, “ostensibly borderless” world, and the socio-political problems it generates. The effect of the border-crossing experience on the life of an immigrant, the image attached to him or her by the “host” society, as well as the artistic reflections on EU institutions and the hospitality of contemporary European societies are also included in the author’s analysis.

Artykuł analizuje polityczne i epistemologiczne ograniczenia postmodernistycznej krytyki sprawiedliwości w dobie ekonomicznych i ideologicznych rządów uniwersalizmu wolnorynkowego.Interpretując brak politycznej odpowiedzi na pochłaniający 25 ofiar pożar zakładu przetwórstwa drobiu w Hamlet w Karolinie Północnej, autor podejmuje dyskusję nad kwestiami polityki tożsamości, wielokulturowości, usytuowania, inności i różnicy. Zdaniem Harveya nie sposób o nich argumentować w oderwaniu od otoczenia politycznego i warunków materialnych. To właśnie powrót do zaniedbywanej przez postmodernistów problematyki ekonomicznej (w tym kwestii wyzysku, klasy czy akumulacji) oraz epistemologia oparta na materializmie historyczno-geograficznym pozwalają na odzyskanie pojęć uniwersalności (w dialektycznej relacji z partykularnością) i sprawiedliwości społecznej jako potężnego dyskursu mobilizującego działania polityczne.
The article analyzes political and epistemological limitations of postmodern critique of justice in the midst of an economic and ideological rule of free market universalism. Interpreting the lack of political response to a fire of chicken processing plant in Hamlet, North Carolina, which took 25 victims, the author discusses questions of identity politics, multiculturalism, situated ness, other ness and difference. It is impossible, in Harvey’s opinion, to discuss them apart from political environment and material conditions. The return to economic issues (including question of exploitation, class and accumulation), neglected by postmodernists, and epistemology based on historical and geographical materialism provide us with an opportunity for the recovery of concepts of universality (in dialectical relation with particularity) and social justice as a powerful mobilizing discourse for political action.

Following a manuscript published by the author at Pós Ciências Sociais (a peer-reviewed journal on the social sciences of Federal University of Maranhão – Brazil), in this text the author discusses Dardot and Laval’s approach to the problem of the common in light of both their theoretical path and the contemporary political impasses of neoliberal capitalism. In this sense, three main axes are articulated in this text: the institution of the common, neoliberal rationality and the problem of governmentality.

Artykuł stanowi obronę bezwarunkowego dochodu podstawowego przed ostatnią krytyką ze strony lewicy. Wyciągając wnioski z wysuwanego w latach siedemdziesiątych dwudziestego wieku żądania płac za pracę domową, opowiadam się za powszechnym, godnym dochodem podstawowym. Przedstawiam go jako koalicyjną, antyproduktywistyczną, antyrodzinną reformę, która odpowiada na problemy stworzone przez obecny system pracy najemnej i rodziny: nieadekwatne szacowanie naszego wkładu w gospodarkę oraz niesprawiedliwy podział dochodu.
This article presents a defence of the demand for a guaranteed basic income against recent Left critiques. Drawing on a series of lessons from the 1970s-era demand for Wages for Housework, I argue in favour of a demand for a liveable and universal basic income as a coalitional, antiproductivist, antifamilial reform that can help to alleviate some of the ways that the current wage-and-family system miscounts our economic contributions and fails as a sys-tem of income distribution.
