Opis:
Due to the fact that in contemporary philosophy phenomenon of responsibility is becoming more significant meaning the author decided to look at its meaning in the context of liberal thought and comunitarin. The article is thus an attempt to compare the phenomenon of responsibility in terms of the liberals and communitarians. Included in the text the author considerations lead to the conclusion that both these positions differently perceive the phenomenon of responsibility, liberalism focusing almost exclusively about his understanding of the individual, while in the framework of comunitarian’s thought opens up space for its understanding in terms of the community.

Opis:
The subject of the present study is help; the foremost ontological condition of its realization (besides intellectual disposition, ethical qualifications, love and others) is responsibility, which constitutes a person’s humanity and thereby makes a unique contribution to the formation of his/her inner structure. Through responsible help we can perform genuine acts of mercy towards our neighbour and carry a small part of his/ her personal fate. The aim of the study is to refine the concept of responsible help and to indicate its several modes in the formation of a person’s humanity. The essence of responsible help is investigated; it presupposes rationality of action, prudence in doing good, and freedom as the fundamental condition of conscious response to values. The refinement of the concept of responsible help is based on the analyses of the virtues of munificence and magnanimity (Aristotle and St Thomas Aquinas) and generosity (J.Tischner). Despite their complex nature, these virtues are definable through an analysis of instances of appropriate help to others.

Opis:
This article analyzes the role a family play in the context of business and society. Although it may seem obvious enough that this primary group is fundamental for social organization, certain aspects of this impact, which in the end influences ethical development of social actors are described. The article concentrates on such issues as gift, trust and responsibility as the elements that are naturally present in family life. The problem is presented in an interdisciplinary way because the nature of the issue demands and requires it. Engaging the category of family is import ant mainly because it has been underemphasized, and this lack of focus has inadvertently supported the domination of the individualistic perspective in economics and business. Such a paradigm is not only the symptom of short-term thinking but also the proof of narrow and reduced anthropology of the economic actor. Families are where people learn the logic of “gift,” which is as necessary in business as in other social spheres. George Gilder wrote that “capitalism begins with giving. Not from greed, avarice, or even self-love can one expect the rewards of commerce, but from a spirit closely akin to altruism, a regard for the needs of others, a benevolent, outgoing, and courageous temper of mind” (Gilder 1993, p. 21). As such, we should thoroughly examine the role that gift giving plays in the functioning of economy. Secondly, the unique role that a family plays in trust development is presented. According to analysis of Jennifer Roback Morse, familie are where people learn to trust. Thirdly, the ability to trust is analyzed as the background for the development of responsibility, a key to developing an ethical attitude. The findings of the paper should help to diagnose the causes of the responsibility crisis and enrich reflection on business ethics by presenting family life as fundamental element in understanding the nature of economic actor and offering family as a useful perspective to understand the process of ethical evaluation of business activity.

Opis:
In theoretical literature there is a great divergence among the definitions of the essence of poverty. It is usually identifi ed as a shortage of essential material means to survive, but this characterization is not sufficient to describe the phenomenon. The multifaceted criteria of measuring poverty, its forms and causes, make it difficult to find a common ground for understanding and effective solutions. What additionally comes into play are disputes concerning doctrine and type of government preferences, which often heat up the discussion instead of enabling a move closer to a well-structured solution that aids eradicating poverty. Amartya Sen establishes the concept of poverty as a failure of basic exchange entitlements. Deciding on this approach, he consistently references the idea of freedom as an unrestricted use of one’s capabilities to pursue desired goals. Poverty then is seen here as a lack of basic exchange entitlements, and not only as a matter of low income, which in turn poses a different problem not only for the economists, but also for the governing bodies, which are responsible for eliminating poverty (and hunger in particular) in the modern world. Sen therefore suggests shifting focus from a perspective centered around income to a perspective centered around capabilities, because the former one is a more precise way of defining the essence of poverty as a state in which some basic exchange entitlements become restricted, which can furthermore widen our field of research from a strictly economic to one to an ethical/anthropological standpoint, giving a clearer picture of the distinct character of poverty and the poor. Pursuing of one’s freedom becomes problematic in the context of poverty and particularly hunger, because in this situation human exchange entitlements are restricted, “handicapped” or fail completely. Amartya Sen’s proposal to expand the number of exchange entitlements, however justified and significant to a particular individual, turns out to be insufficient, because it seems that freedom ontologically extends beyond the category human exchange entitlements.

Cause-related marketing (CRM) is a corporate social responsibility tool that is gaining popularity among companies. Cooperation between for-profit and non-profit organizations is mutually beneficial it enhances the image of one of the parties involved while providing the other party with means for financing their activity. The aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of CRM as a tool for enhancing the competitiveness and to determine the factors determining this effectiveness. The paper is a literature review including definition, external drivers of propagation of CRM and the review of available results of empirical studies of CRM effectiveness. The main propositions of the paper: a) CRM is an effective tool for enhancing the company competitiveness; b) The rising popularity of CRM arises from the expectations of stakeholders; c) The factors of effectiveness of CRM can be defined. The propositions have been verified with the use of empirical data available in the literature. The data supports the propositions that CRM influences elements of competitiveness like brand image, customer loyalty and market results. The studies of stakeholders’ expectations indicate that they exert pressure on companies to follow the principles of corporate social responsibility. The identified and empirically confirmed factors influencing the effectiveness of CRM include strategic fit between the focal company and their non-profit partner organization, duration of the campaign, product type and the gender of the target group.

The recent crisis was a surprise to the ruling business, economic and political elites. Leadership in crisis conditions is a special kind of mission and a performance in a precarious situation. Unusual and unexpected crisis situation may create a special kind of leadership under conditions of uncertainty. We can put it in words: Leadership in times of crisis. It should take account primarily of preventive and anti-crisis action, beneficiaries and victims of the crisis, management style, minimizing risks and threats, as well as use of the experience of the crisis as an invaluable knowledge for the future. In a crisis situation there is ambiguity of leadership. On the one hand there is a decline in the credibility of leadership, and critique of leadership, on the other hand there are the expectations of various interest groups that a charismatic leader will emerge who restore credibility, trust and satisfy their need for security. The aim of this paper is an attempt to answer the question: What model of leadership is effective in a crisis?

The financial crisis as a realization of self-fulfilling prophecy reveals an important ethical dilemma of journalist’s responsibility. The dilemma is expressed in a question, if one should publish the information on crisis, since the publication probably increases the degree of crisis. The difficulty to answer this question points to the shortcomings of the standard conception of moral reasoning and to an approach to the relation between general normative theory and applied ethics. Instead of the standard conception the author proposes a „grammatical” account of general/applied ethics relation, connected with the Wittgenstein’s approach to the question of necessity in mathematics and other non-descriptive disciplines.

The definition of leadership and the role of leadership in generating and maintaining effective organizational change has been widely studied for a long time. Leadership is often defined in terms of the influence, emotional manipulation, classical top-down approach. We must learn to build leadership concept on a foundation of ethical reasoning, rather than pretending that leadership and ethics are separate. The search for leadership and the search for ethics amount to the same thing, and both have to be connected to our concept of corporate identity. As a practical example of such an attitude the typology of different leadership paradigms is analysed. We suggest here that organic paradigm, or co-leadership, is the most adaptive to the challenges of corporate social responsibility transformation. Good leadership, in moral and technical sense, means participative leadership which can create conditions within organizations for employee and stakeholder empowerment. In this ongoing process values become an integral part of the practice of daily management, the means by which the responsible company acts.

Singer’s reflection on global problems solutions, eg. climate changes, disparities of economic development, etc. brings many valuable observations on moral condition of the contemporary world. In terms of normative sphere, it appears to be profoundly less constructive. The concept of the global government as an ethical subject, which he develops at the end of his observations, does not take into account negative experiences of UN. In such aspect, it constitutes a step back towards alterglobalistic concepts, which did not create satisfying theories of a new social ethical subject, but put emphasis on a problem of forceless and seeming actions of contemporary political elites. Peter Singer seems to avoid noticing such problem.

Because CSR concerns stakeholders and borrowers, it may seem obvious that implementation of the two ideas should be parallel. Yet banks, desspite the implementation of CSR, do not act with the idea of responsible lending. By ignoring responsible lending, sometimes banks do a disservice to their borrowers. Examples of banks operating in Poland provide empirical support for this thesis.

In this article we will try to answer the question of organizational hypocrisy in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) This way, we will be able to illustrate the problems that arise as a result of discrepancies between the CSR declarations and actual company activities. Author of the article lists examples of “ideological”, “managerial”, “integrative”, “aspirational” and “legalistic” approaches towards CSR organizational hypocrisy, and he also tries to evaluate its suitability in restoring credibility of the CSR idea. The results of the overview, lead to “negative” interpretation of CSR, which underlines the social irresponsibility. Contrary to often expressed theoreticians’ fears, the proper approach would be legalization of CSR which would lead to gradual implementation of chosen and concretized CSR postulates in the legal system.

A direct inspiration to write this text was a question asked to participants of the International Conference organized by EBEN Poland in 2014: do we still believe in the free market? Reflection on the question of the current market freedom has made the author re-examine the nature of economic freedom, particularly compared with its philosophical understanding. The result of this analysis could be shortly presented in the form of a following thesis: separation of economic freedom understanding from its philosophical roots, and over-use of this idea in the economic space by means of economic individualism, has led to a paradoxical situation in which the market becomes – mainly in the corporate environment – less and less free, while development of economy based on the growth of corporate power threatens the freedom of man as an employee, customer and citizen alike.
