Opis:
The project involved soil and land evaluation, landscape ecology and preservation, and sustainable agriculture using GIS for 100 sq. km area of old glacial landscapes in the North-Eastern Poland. Extensive farming and husbandry during communist rule had caused intense degradation there. The study was aimed for determination of biotic potential in such an area. The main steps included: field data gathering, database building and validation, Boolean and fuzzy logic database transformations, soil, water, and land use assessment. The biotic potential of the area was determined based on many environmental features like soils qualitics responsible for nutrient supply, warmth distribution based on DEM model, and water availability assessed using field water capacity. Land use map, created on the base of aerial photos interprelation, helped with the evaluate agreement between environmental properties and contemporary land use. Two ways of data transformation and analysis were used during determination of the biotic potential. The first one was based on fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic theory which assumes gradual changes of phenomena. This approach was especially useful while soil properties were considered to determine areas of different biotic potential. The second one based on the conventional approach in landscape ecology - that is referring spatial information of investigated environmental features to landscape units. The results proved fuzzy approach being in much better agreement with field data, mainly because of lost environmental information and the supposedly sharp borders of landscape units. The last step was the land use assessment with relation to the areas of known biotic potential value. The degradation role of collective farm on chemical soil properties was much pronounced.
