Opis:
Xerothermic grasslands are veritable botanical gems of the Ponidzie region, located in the upland zone of Poland. Most of these exceptional plant communities have been formed as a result of deforestation, in habitats characterized by specific climatic, hydrological and soil conditions. The result of the natural reserve protection of the xerothermic grassland, however, is opposite to the desired result. The survival of the xerothermic grassland depends on the change in the approach to their protection. Xerothermic grasslands are an excellent example of the difficulties with maintaining very valuable, but semi-natural and anthropogenic communities, related to a large extent to traditional, extensive forms of agriculture. Similar problems occur in the case of gladiolus meadows in lower subalpine forest zones or of once-mown molinion meadows in river valleys.

Opis:
The sensibility of landscapes in the area of transition between pleistocen's terraces and bottom of river's valley is described in article. The part of Nida's valley was taken as an example. Presented area is a belt of mixing impacts connected with two fully different landscape's types. These mixing („fighting”) result distinct spatial and seasonal variability of water hardness and water reaction. The great sensibility of these landscape is manifested very slow recovery soil's and vegetation's features, after activity of antropogenie factor, to earlier state.

Opis:
W artykule poruszono zagadnienie specyficznej „roli” dolin rzecznych w regionalizacji fizycznogeograficznej. Przedstawiono przykłady trudności związanych z uwzględnieniem dolin rzecznych w jednostkach regionalnych wysokiej rangi. Zaprezentowano prawidłowości „zaniku” informacji o dolinach rzecznych wraz z przechodzeniem do wyższych poziomów regionalizacji.
River valleys are the components of mountain ridges, morainic plateaus, plateau, and other plains that are on their own considered as not river valleys. River valleys characterize the functioning of the environment and play an important role of pathways of material migration. On the other hand, „not river valley landscapes” reflect environmental structural features well. For this reasons river valleys will always be a problem for physico-geographical regionalization procedures, regardless of the chosen regionalization method. Examples of various types of such difficulties are showu in this article. These difficulties are related to inclusions of small segments of river valleys into regions of higher rank. Small segments of river valleys are included in many ways into "not valley" greater regions - in accordance with generally accepted regionalization methods (fig. 1, fig. 2, fig. 3, fig. 4). Merging small segments of river valleys into greater "valley" regions would cause disintegration of traditional network of large regional units. Another manifestation of described problems is an underestimation of the surface of the valley landscapes on the physico-geographical regionalization maps. Share of the area of subregions with "valleys names" in the total area of any physico-geographical region is smaller than in a real situation (tab. 1). Valley landscapes are troublesome objects to mark on the map, due to their specific shape and often a small surface. Wherefore they are the first to be a subject to the cartographic generalization. This makes it impossible to use regionalization maps to properly determine the pathways of material migration and the functioning of the environment.

Opis:
The study proves that the structure and functioning of landscape in the researched area resembles in many respects polygenetic highland and medium-mountain areas of Western Europe, whose contemporary diversity is determined by the following factors: (underground) geological structure, genetic type of Quaternary deposits, and - in some cases - erosion (Ostaszewska, 1987). It should also be emphasised that, similarly to other, "old" lithogenic landscapes, interpretation of geological features of the Pińczów Hummock stili remains a challenge, while some phenomena (particularly those related to the role of periglacial processes in the formation of contemporary landforms) even today defy satisfactory explanation. The outlined process of interdependence between the components and spatial constituents of the landscape in the Pińczów region is solely based on the findings of field research. In the future, it should be supplemented by a more thorough lithological examination and information on the contemporary (if any) activity of tectonic structures (the town chronicles indicate that the last recorded earthquake took place in the 18th century). The only method allowing to properly characterise this highly complicated landscape seems to consist in preparing a more detailed field documentation (especially making the drilling network more dense). Although rather painstaking, this traditional method of geographic research prevents the researchers from falling into the trap of "easy generalisations", of which geoecologists studying the landscapes of old mountains and highlands are frequently accused, and quite rightly so (Cf. Semmel, 1996).
