    The aim of the paper is to determine the characteristics and components of the Powiśle image residing in social consciousness and the perception of the functions performed by this district. Powiśle's image among all social groups was positive and the most important places in this city district are the Warsaw University Library, the Copernicus Science Centre and the Vistula riverside. New investments again began to integrate city and the river. Now the changes are speeding up, there are not only more cafes and clubs, but also offices and apartments and Powiśle is perceived as trendy and buzzy district. Warsaw's Powiśle is seen also as an attractive area for living and recreation. Respondents sees an increase in attractiveness of the Vistula river, also a wide range of entertainment and cultural venues makes Powiśle attractive to young residents of the capital. Also, students highly appreciate the transformation of the Vistula riverside, in their opinion, operably linked to the central campus of the University of Warsaw, distinguished by rich gastronomic offer, entertainment and cultural activities. The study showed that the Warsaw Powiśle is perceived as socially heterogeneous area. This area is subject to further the process of heterogenization, thanks to investments held there. The new recognizable objects, transformation of riverside areasand improved accessibility attract investors and new residents.

    The management and the functions of Powiśle district in Warsaw have always been closely associated with the Vistula river. Powiśle (literally near-the-Vistula) is a district in Warsaw's central borough, Śródmieście. It is located between the Vistula river and its escarpment. Development periods of Powiśle can be divided into three main phases. The first, pre-industrial period, ended at the end of the 18th century. At the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the area became industrialized, and the industrial period lasted until the early 20th century. Then, the factories started to be re-localised to more favourable terrain for them, primarily to the districts adjacent to the city centre: Wola and Praga. Powiśle gradually be gan to move into a period of post-industrial development in the interwar period. After the transition to a market economy in 1990 these attractive riverside areas have begun to take their rightful place in the structure of the city. New investments ( e.g. the tunnel under Wisłostrada, the Copernicus Science Centre, the University of Warsaw Library, a metro station) helped to reintegrate the city and the river. Nowadays the changes are speeding up: there are not only more cafes and clubs, but also new offices and apartments.

    Over the years, Powiśle was not an attractive area for Warsaw's inhabitants, because of regular flooding by Vistula river and was and localization of industrial sites during the 20th century. However, since the 1930s, the situation has been slowly evolving because of the intensive construction of this area. Thus, the social structure of Powiśle started to change step by step and became to be attractive for the upper categories. The slowly change in the perception of Powiśle raises questions about the attractiveness of this area for Warsaw's elites after 1989. Thus, this article presents the change in the perception of Powiśle according to Warsaw's elites after 1989. It uses data from population censuses 1988 and 2000 and the results of the interviews' conducted with Warsaw's elites in 2011. The analysis of the occupational structure of Powiśle between 1988 and 2002 revealed a growth in the number of higher professional categories (directors and high civil servants, and specialists) representing almost half of active population of Powiśle in 2002. Furthermore, in the light of the interviews with elites in 2011 Powiśle is assessed as a "good" area and is placed among ten the most prestigious areas in Warsaw, very often quoted apart from Śródmieście. There is a number of arguments for this growth in attractiveness in Powiśle: localization in the proximity to the city centre, quiet, less densely built-up with several old buildings with architectural value as well as some green places. Moreover, this area has become a popular place among upper categories for spending their free time. However, the majority of the Warsaw's elites interviewed, usually spent their free time in the neighbouring areas in Śródmieście i.e. around Krakowskie Przedmieście street, Nowy Świat street and the Three Cross place.

    Powiśle is an area of Warsaw, and its current character has been formed by location on the valley, close to the Vistula river. For centuries, this area was subject to frequent flooding which caused epidemics. Powiśle was inhabited by the lower social classes with numerous pathologies and high crime rate. Changes have occurred since the nineteenth century, when there was a significant development of industry. During the Warsaw Uprising most of the pre-war buildings have been destroyed. Restorative plans halted further development of the area. This research determines the current characteristics of Powiśle by five functions: transport, educational, recreational, office and residential. The analysis covers the decade from 2004 to 2014, when changes were extremely intensive. Powiśle turned into a trendy and attractive place. Office space was doubled, and luxury residential projects were completed. Brownfield sites have been revitalized and made available as public spaces. More than 30% of the space are now green areas. Powiśle nowadays is closer to the city center through the second metro line and it is popular cultural and educational place. The formation of academic buildings creates areas of science. It stimulates the development of the whole area, because students and employees need service points, pubs, clubs and shops. With the modernization of the Vistula boulevards and location of the popular clubs on the waterfront more and more people spend their free time next to the river. Powiśle is a favorite place for visitors of restaurants and pubs for several years. The above analysis shows that Powiśle underwent a process of gentrification.
