Opis:
The article contains an analysis of family and genealogical connections of one of the most prominent historical figures of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th century – Andrzej Olszowski, Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland – politician, clergyman, writer and intellectual. He was a descendant of a middle-class gentry who settled in the land of Łęczyca, sealing himself with the Wilczekosy (Wolf Scythes) coat of arms, attesting to the origin of Clan Prusy (the medieval refugees from Pruthenia attacked by Theutonic Order). Despite this modest pedegree he had such outstanding figures among his ancestors as Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski – a Renaissance writer and humanist, and his nepoties included the famous brothers Załuscy – bishops, patrons of art and science, the creators of the library, which became the leaven of the polish National Library.

Opis:
In the 1420s, during the founding of Ujazd, the first church was built. It was a wooden church. It survived until 1794. The construction of the second temple was initiated by Primate Andrzej Olszowski. It was built in 1674–1680. Its architecture is typical of the wall-pillar construction popular in the 17th century. It was characterized by pillars embedded in the single-nave interior. Comparative analysis indicates the Warsaw architectural center as the provenance of this temple, whose representative objects were the buildings of Giovanni Battista Gisleni. Gisleni belonged to the most prominent architects of the Polish Baroque. He was active in the court of Sigismund III, Władysław IV and Jan Kazimierz. Primate Olszowski therefore had to meet him personally. In 1694, the church was consecrated by the grandson of Kacper Denhoff – Bishop of Przemyśl, and later by the Grand Chancellor of the Crown, Jerzy Albrecht Denhoff.

Opis:
The Author looks at Primate Michal Jerzy Poniatowski’s death not only through the prism of funerary poems. She also studies it in connection with the works dedicated to him during his life that show distinctly how different he was seen and judged. Among poems composed after the Primate’s death, the Author chooses the unique apologetic volume with two epitaphs by Jacek Idzi Przybylski and Andrzej Jan Kanty Trzcinski as the subject of more detailed research. Among the works that express a depreciating attitude to Poniatowski, the Author cites the anonymous ones. The poems described in this paper harmonise well with the whole atmosphere that accompanied Poniatowski’s death.

Opis:
Primate Andrzej Olszowski (1623–1677) left a rich literary legacy, which has not yet become an object of interest for historians of literature. Olszowski’s works have been treated as source texts for political history studies of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th century. The first part of the article is an outline of Olszowski’s biography, secondly, the entire output of the writer is briefly summarized. Next, the main work of Olszowski: Censura candidatorum sceptri polonici is analyzed thoroughly – both in terms of issues and writing skills. Also, the treatise De Archiepiscopatu Gnesnensi receives insightful analysis. Other works, especially oratorical texts, have been discussed synthetically, but with regard to the literary qualities of these texts, with an indication of Olszowski’s mastery of the art of rhetoric. In addition, the outline of the entire work of the Primate is concisely drawn, postulating that it should become the subject of a monographic study.

Opis:
The objective of this article is to present ecclesiastic activity of the Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate Andrzej Olszowski in light of the few source materials preserved in the Archdiocese Archives in Gniezno. As the Primate and the first Senator of the Republic of Poland, Olszowski did not avoid criticism for his political activities. Nevertheless his church activity was assessed positively, although due to his public involvement he had little time to fully engage in ministerial service in his subsequent dioceses.
