    The article has a ‘celebratory’ character connected with two jubilees: – the 25th anniversary of the Conference on Industrial Geography, organised by the Institute of Geography, Cracow Pedagogical University, in collaboration with the Industrial Geography Committee of the Polish Geographical Society; and – the 80th birthday of Professor Stanisław Misztal, Honorary President of the Industrial Geography Committee of the Polish Geographical Society. This is a good opportunity to analyse and discuss the changes which have taken place in industrial geography over this period. The discussion, presented in the first section, embraces the following issues: 1. Change in the definition of the substantive scope of industrial geography; 2. Methodological trends and research directions; 3. A new look at the location of economic activity; 4. The place of industry in on-going spatial processes. The next section of the article addresses the question of how the changes are reflected in the 25-years’ history of the Cracow Conference. The last section presents evaluation of the current state of the Polish industrial geography, including its strengths and weaknesses.

    Geographical analysis of new socio-economic phenomena is often triggered by considerations made by researchers in the fields of economy and sociology. Network economy is an example widely presented in numerous works, e.g. The Age of Access: The New Culture of Hypercapitalism Where All of Life is a Paid-for Experience by Jeremy Rifkin. In the networked world, the ground of primary commerce is moving from geography to cyberspace – where GDP is now predominantly immaterial and based on ownership of intellectual property. Market transactions of buyers and sellers who exchange produced goods and services for profit are now being replaced by network relationships between suppliers and users – servers and clients. The new way of life is characterized by the dematerialization of goods (even of money) and their metamorphosis into pure services, the rise of networks, and a shift in commerce from production to marketing. An example of a significant method of claiming intellectual property rights and revenue from farmers were terminator seeds developed by Monsanto. The seeds were bio-engineered to be sterile, so that instead of harvesting seeds at the end of one crop season to be used for the next, the farmer would have no choice but to turn to Monsanto for seeds for the next year crop. Outsourcing has become a corporate substitution of internal ownership of physical capital and operations for access to resources and processes from outside suppliers. In the times of market economy, the localizability of tangible capital and production processes in geographical space was the decisive factor which allowed geographical analysis. Nowadays more sophisticated tools of geographical research should be developed to study economic phenomena in various networks, e.g. the new implementation of topology of network relations.

    This research employed the comparative analysis method in order to determine the range of industrial geography issues in secondary schools geography teaching programmes and textbooks. The aim of the research was to identify the factors that determine the choice and presentation methods of topics in industrial geography. The quantitative and qualitative analysis was conducted on the basis of a query of currently used state-approved teaching programmes and textbooks in geography for secondary schools (gymnasium, general, specialized, and technical secondary schools). In total, 15 programmes and 15 textbooks were analysed at the level of lower-secondary school, and 10 programmes and 10 textbooks at the level of upper-secondary schools. Generally, the issues in industrial geography are included in the II- and III-form programmes of both lower- and upper-secondary schools. The amount of time that the teacher can devote to industrial geography topics is rather small, and most often equals from 1 to 3 classes. Therefore it is crucial that the syllabuses and textbooks treat these issues in accordance with the contemporary trends in geography teaching methodology and with the industrial geography scientific state of the art. This article investigates how these assumptions are realized in relation to the industrial geography issues in the syllabuses, teaching programmes and textbooks.

Obejmuje on szereg etapów badawczych, m.in.: ocenę dotychczasowego procesu kształtowania przedsiębiorstwa oraz struktury przestrzennej przemysłu określonego układu przestrzennego, wyznaczanie celów dalszej przebudowy stanu początkowego, określenie możliwości generowania nowych i wykorzystania dotychczasowych czynników rozwoju oraz możliwości ograniczania barier, podejmowanie decyzji co do wyboru najefektywniejszych metod zarządzania do realizacji założonych celów, określenie kierunków przemian struktur przemysłowych, analizę mechanizmu procesu przebudowy od stanu początkowego do stanu końcowego, ocenę stanu końcowego, aby sformułować dalsze kierunki przemian.
    The paper proposes a research pattern, which can be applied to the works in the field of industrial geography. It includes several stages of research, among others: an assessment of the formation process of the company and the spatial structure of industry in defined spatial system, setting targets for further reconstruction of the initial state, identifying opportunities to generate new and use of existing factors of development and the possibilities of reducing barriers, decision-making process in the selection of the most effective methods for managing organizational goals, the establishment of transformation guidelines of industrial structures, analysis of the conversion process mechanism from initial to a final state, assessment of the final state for the formulation of further directions of change.

    The note presents the main research problems and important organizational facts reffering to the Krakow cycle of conferences on the issues of structural transformation of industry and services, organized in the years 1985-2014, as well as issued since 2000 Studies of the Industrial Geography Commission of the Polish Geographical Society, which published in the form of scientific articles many papers presented during the conferences.
