The article discusses the breakdown of Polish cemetery culture based on the literature of the last quarter century. The cause of the “breakdown” is a model of narcissistic cemetery formed after World War II; it mainly includes the dead worthy of commemoration, or the Poles who died acceptable death, and it excludes the ethnic strangers and unworthy form of death. However, the actions taken after 1989 for the sanctification of the dead Jews proved that death with dignity may also exist outside the narcissistic cemetery. In response, the Polish funerary community creates hysterical cemetery. In this cemetery, the society incorporates odious aspects of death into the mourning culture. The “abominable” content gives the basis for the establishment of the impure cemetery, which may include the death of the excluded, but is extended to the entire living space.

The text was written as a kind of short literary guide to the First Communal Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Modern Athens. The reader is presented with basic facts about the cemetery’s history as well as given a glimpse of what the cemetery looks like since it is very much unlike Polish necropolises. As the First Cemetery is regarded as the largest outdoor collection of the 19th century Modern Greek sculptures, the article contains descriptions of the most famous tombs. Then the author comments on some of the most quoted epitaphs and then focuses on the work of the most famous poets and writers that rest at the First Cemetery. He focuses on how they approached the topic of passing and death. The guide to this exceptional place is the protagonist of the Christos Chomenidis’ story, i.e., a man who was brought back to life on the First Cemetery on the day of the Second Coming.

The author deals with the problem of a “dead” park. The fallen landscape construction is like a necropolis. The refl ections are organized around Fazaniec – a border park established in Upper Silesia in the mid-19th century by count Hans Ulrich von Schaffgotsch. The death of the park after 1945 is interpreted in connection with wildness, darkness, decline, transgression as well as being beyond culture and social emotions.

Mnimouria – a modest country cemetery plays an important role in the novels by Alexandros Papadiamantis. While the pretentious offi cial First Cemetery of Athens displays the wealth of the nouveaux riches who strive to imitate in an artifi cial and exaggerated manner various forms of tombs of the ancient Greek Kerameikos in an attempt to prove their ancient ancestry, Papadiamantis in his picture of Skiathos little koimeterion manages to place it both in the order of nature and in the world of culture. He shows us, sometimes not without a mild irony, how the old pagan beliefs and superstitions such as: evil-eye, curses, ghosts and apparitions still coexist harmoniously with sincere Christian faith of his simple compatriots in an island where one could hear the pipe of a young shepherd, who could have been perhaps a satyr, or glimpse a strange shape, possibly of a Nymph or a Naiad (neraida).

The essay on Brussels Dieweg Cemetery in Uccle presents the concept of reading the cemetery culture text as a story of the dialogue between the living and the dead, which was taking place at the time of establishing and functioning of the necropolis, i.e., starting in the second half of the 19th century until 1939. Dieweg Cemetery is an example of Catholic-Jewish funeral art, whose historic testimonies in a variety of styles fall into decay and surrender to nature. The ‘reportage’ part gives an account of the dispute between Catholics and Belgian liberals in the 1860s over the right to administer the licences on the new necropolis. The main part of the essay touches upon the subject of cemetery aesthetics symbolising attitudes towards death in the second half of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. They are expressed in multilingual inscriptions and numerous grave medallions in two religions on the ground, where Catholics and Jews form a community. A plan of the necropolis and a series of author’s photographs are attached to the paper as they are crucial illustrations of the words.

The article discusses the semiotics of Prague cemeteries as well as their role in Czech culture against the backdrop of the cultural role of cemeteries in Central Europe. Prague cemeteries are silent as their presence in the memory and life of Czechs is much less noticeable than one would have assumed it should be as resulting from the 19th century patriotic concepts which accompanied the establishment of national cemetery, the magnifi cence of funeral ceremonies of the time and the signifi cance of necropolises cultural heritage. The Czech way of commemorating the dead personages of cultural merit is naming after them public institutions rather than visiting the graveyard and perceiving thecemetery as an institution of memorialising national history. The refl ection on the cultural role of Prague cemeteries is more often present in Czech literary works than in scientific studies on Czech culture. This peculiar indifference is characteritic of Czech mentality, even though the determining factors to create Prague cemetery did not distinguish Czechs from the nations of Central Europe – national revival and national mythology together with the change in perceiving the cemetery in the urban organism.

The paper begins with an anecdote concerning one of most intriguing works of Frédéric Chopin, Nocturne in G-minor, Op. 15, nr 3. A story goes that Chopin composed this nocturn inspired by a performance of Hamlet and intended to name it: In the Graveyard. Regardless of whether this story is true or false, the implied plot-line of Chopin’s nocturn, developing from a wistful and then dramatic opening passage to the harmonious, hymn-like second part well fi ts the atmosphere of Shakespeare’s drama which does not preclude the possibility of consolation and the faith in transcendence, despite its prevalent preoccupation with ubiquitous iniquity, death and decay. In contrast with the rest of the play, however, act 1 scene 5, set in the graveyard, is marked by an entirely materialistic tendency, in the vein of the late medieval dance macabre. Still more unsettling is the vision of tenantless graves and the dead returning from the liminal space of the cemetery to the polis reserved for the living. The ghosts of the people who have died violent death are not harmless apparitions, fi gments of imagination, but as Quentin Meillassoux argues, they destroy the very boundary between life and death which safeguards our existence. The ghost of Banquo in Macbeth is a “living” example of such a radical subversion of the established dichotomies, which Shakespeare examines most carefully in his great tragedies. In the theatre of the 20th century, Shakespeare’s refl ection on the elusive boundary between the world of the living and the uncanny realm of the dead gained a great momentus in the perplexing stage production of Macbeth directed by a Lithuanian, Eimuntas Necrošius. The power of his vision stems from the connection of Shakespearean tragedy with the folk tradition of “Dziady”, an ancient Balto-Slavic custom commemorating the dead.
