    Zwierciadlana zagadka (Mirror’s riddle) is the only science-fiction novel by Jadwiga Łuszczewska who is known primarily as an author of historical novels and improvisator. The present story uses the legend of the basilisk and the efforts to bring it back to life. Analysing Zwierciadlana zagadka through the prism of the urban legend, a phenomenon described in the literature and folklore research in the second half of the twentieth century, allows to read it as a record of the late nineteenth century fear of modern discoveries related to the sphere of human memory − capturing images in photography and on video tape.

    The author aims to identify elements of dystopia in three unfinished manuscripts by Mickiewicz which were published in one volume entitled A History of the Future. The article first examines the terminological difficulties associated with differentiating between the notions of “anti-utopia” and “dystopia”. It then proceeds to discuss aprose work by Mickiewicz which exists only in the form of a summary written by Antoni Edward Odyniec, a friend of the poet. The analysis of Odyniec’s depiction leads to a conclusion that Mickiewicz was writing an innovative work according to the poetics of science fiction, a genre largely unknown at the time, a work which would predict the directions of Europe’s development in the areas of ethics, politics, civilization and technology. It is impossible, however, to determine the potential significance of dystopian factors in that work. The largest number of dystopian features was found in the second fragment of A History of the Future which describes the final stage of aPan-European revolution against monarchal order. The last fragment of A History of the Future, which predicts the course of a political coup in France, is connected in the present article not so much with the poetics of dystopia as with the genre of “political fiction”.

    The starting point for the present essay is the controversy that arose in the 1840s between Edward Dembowski and Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. It pertained to the poetics of George Sand’s Les sept cordes de la Lyre, published in 1839 in the Parisian Revue des Deux Mondes magazine. The argument between the two Polish critics can be summarised in one question, frequently formulated straightforwardly in the contemporary critical writing of the epoch: what is the point of using allegory in the 19th century? What is more, in his article, Dembowski juxtaposed allegory and “fantasy”, essentially associated with the matter of subjectivity of a literary text, which topic was undertaken by Kraszewski. This essay aims to re-construct the Polish and French contexts, allowing us to understand both ends of the spectrum we use to evaluate the allegories in a literary work. The question about the point of using allegory by 19th-century writers is asked anew to extract from the modern historical-literary perspective themes important for understanding the 19th-century literary worldview, in which the tension between the conventionality and emotionality of the literary communication act is revealed.
