Opis:
This article aims to present and describe the situation of the literary language of the Molise Slavs. In the last decades, various scholars have expressed their views on this issue with some of them claiming that Molise Slavic is a literary language, whilst by the other ones this vernacular was denied such right. Although Alexandr D. Dulichenko – who coined the term „Slavic literarymicrolanguage” – dated its literary traditions back to the 19th century, some scholars perceive the 18th or 20th centuries as the beginning of the literature written in Molise Slavic (MSl). Consequently, this led to ambiguity that this article is trying to clarify. Until recently, this vernacular was prevalently used for poetry and short prose, but with recent publications of Nicola Gliosca’s novels, Molise Slavic is now on its way to develop as a full-fledged literary language. According to typology presented by Antoni Furdal, MSl can now – with presence of translations – be classified as a „literary language with limited sphere of use”.

Opis:
The article presents a genealogical and sociolinguistic classification of Slavic idioms, drawing on the example of Resian. Resian is an autochthonous idiom, spoken in the Resia Valley (Ital. Val Resia), which belongs to the Municipality of Resia (Rozajanski kumün, Ital. Comune di Resia) within the Province of Udine (Ital. Provincia di Udine) in Friuli–Venezia Giulia, an autonomous Italian region. The genealogical linguistics studies the genealogical relationship between idioms and on the basis of the nature of their mutual relationship establishes their genealogical classification. In this respect, Resian must be viewed as a dialect of Slovene. Sociolinguistics, on the other hand, tends to view languages as systems of communication and on the basis of different spheres of usage assigns their sociolinguistic classification. From the latter viewpoint, Resian can be defined as a literary/standard microlanguage within Slovene, which due to the absence of the Slovene standard language is put into the role of the local literary language with a rather limited scope of functional varieties.

This article examines diverse travel narratives about steamship voyages to Asia in the first two decades after the opening of the Suez Canal, with special focus on journeys through the Suez Canal, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. Sources include Polish, Serbian and Russian authors: Julian Fałat, Vlado Ivelić, Lucjan Jurkiewicz, Milan Jovanović, Vsevolod Krestovskiy, Karol Lanckoroński, Bronisław Piłsudski, Paweł Sapieha, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Ivan Yuvachev, Hugo Zapałowicz, and Ivan Zarubin. Given this variety of sources, consisting of 12 accounts in 3 languages, written by different types of travellers with dissimilar social backgrounds, it is possible to demonstrate a variety of phenomena that may be associated with steamship voyages. The two main issues examined here are: 1) the coexistence of multiple mobilities in the era of steam power, 2) different experiences of time while voyaging.

Opis:
The author analyzes the origins and characteristics of werewolves (human-wolves) and lycanthropus (human-dogs) as dual-natured beings within Slavic folk beliefs. He also analyzes the way their mythological properties transform through literature. The werewolf’s mythos is approached through texts of 19th century authors, Russians Orest Somov (Oboroten: narodnaja skazka, 1829) and Alexander Kuprin (Serebrjanyj volk, 1901) and the Pole from Belarus Jan Barszczewski(Wilkołak, 1844), while the lycanthrope’s is viewed through the lens of the literary fairy tale by Serbian Joksim Nović Otočanin (Vrzino kolo i Zlatni i Alem-grad, 1864). The author puts focus on symbolism, specifically that of the human-beast dichotomy. The literary representation of this man-beast duality in 19th century Slavic written prose indicates a fantasy view of the coexistence between beast and man – the beastly in men, or the human in beasts.

Opis:
The article raises the question of functioning of Cyrilo-Methodian tradition in the Bulgarian culture in the conditions of modernity. The subject of analysis is the traditional and originally religious notion of the “Slavic / Bulgarian enlighteners”. It is argued that Cyril and Methodius are presented as patrons of enlightenment, first understood as education, and then as an historical epoch, and that is why they become absolute role models of a citizen, a Bulgarian, an Orthodox, a communist. The conclusion is that the starting point for understanding the modern narrative about the creators of Slavic alphabet should be the idea of enlightenment, which in the course of time has been secularized and concretized.

Archives are important places for researching and reconstructing the past, they lead to discoveries, and they can refute dominant stereotypes. Despite that fact, Serbian feminist scholars have neglected archival research of women writers. In this paper the author points out to resistance of the main Serbian institutions to digitalize archival sources of women writers and indicates some consequences of contemporary feminists’ stance to historical sources. The author directs attention to some important but ignored examples of archival materials in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since they offer informative, significant, and complex account on the past, they can help reconstruct of the South Slavic culture and establish the importance of women writers. Keywords

The first and most extensive part is a kind of lexicon with 177 entries: personal name and by-names of actual historical figures; biblical and mythological characters; names of ethnonyms, tribes and languages; geographic names (including names of sacred objects), difficult and archaic words. Part II contains the text of the Vita. The book is a handbook intended for a wide groupof lay audiences, including Bulgarian Studies scholars abroad. This handbook is a coherent and well-thought-out entity. The study combines the condition of scientific credibility with the feature of accessibility. There is a need for similar teaching aids in the didactic process of students of Slavic studies.

The paper is an introduction to teaching the Polish language and culture to native users of closely related languages. The presented synthesis is intended for teachers interested in improving their competence in teaching Polish to East Slavs and those who have just started their adventure in Slavic glottodidactics. The paper grew out of a desire to make teaching Polish to East Slavs (mainly Ukrainans) as effective as possible due to the rapidly increasing need because of a large number of war refugees from Ukraine. Based on their experience in teaching Polish to native users of East Slavic languages, the authors pay particular attention to the Slavic intercomprehension phenomenon and its influence on the glottodidactic process. They also address the problem of the key grammatical mismatches and introduce several good practices.

Opis:
This paper deals with the discursive phenomenon of reflexivity in the epic poetryof South Slavic romantic poets around the middle of the 19th century. Reflection is here understood as a kind of poetic self-formation procedure of romantic literary subject and his efforts to renovate epic mode in its original form. Starting with concept of “epic Romanticism”, in a way specific to South Slavic literatures, the author proceeds by distinguishing basic modes: explicit, implicit, and intertextual reflexivity. While the first two are related to typical romantic affectivity (D. Demeter, F. Prešeren) and/or rhetoric identification with oral folk rhapsodists’ tradition (P. P. Njegoš), the third one is marked with so-called “integration story” (I. Mažuranić), or mise en abyme, i.e. “the mirror in the text” effect as a medium of artistic auto-perspectivization and possible creative invention which leads to indications of the early pro-modern poetic procedures.

The article discusses the specific of sanctity of Parascheva of Tirnovo in the Russian Orthodox Church, an anchoress the most venerated by the Eastern Church. The pattern of holiness formed in the late nineteenth century is far richer and deeper than in other Slavic Orthodox churches. It is based on the Trinitarian, Christological, Marian themes, as well as on the strict hesychastic asceticism proper for hermits. The functions of the saint are also wider – she serves as a teacher, protector, defender, guardian of the state, the highest authorities (tsar) and the faithful – which is not typical for the sanctity of women, but rather for the holy hierarchs, bishops as pastors of the Church and the nation.
