Opis:
The topic is romantic travelogues with the subject of Bosnia: descriptions andinsights into the perceived “reality” of the Bosnian area and people of the19th century presented through linguistic and stylistic means and on examples of selected travelogues from that period. New historical experiences of the writer opened the way for the emotional reception of collective practices of people, and this often leads to ahistorical conceptualization and long-lasting stereotypes. Considering that both linguistic activity and historical memory are mutual psychological processes, the diverse strategic character of the travel discourse through research shows that known cultural patterns can often deceive with their simplified form.

Opis:
If we regard democracy as tied with four functions: availability, representation, freedom, and education, then we can state that the Romanticism conceived as the intellectual formation and literary current has managed to realize the deepest and thorough process of democratization of culture, of which results remain valid and actual in our contemporary reality. In the Romanticism, two traditions converge in order to construct its progressive character: the educational tradition derived from the German idealism and the liberation one. The educational tradition has been inspiring the development of knowledge, education and university values by shaping the holistic conception of education and personal progress. In this article, the educational orientation of the Romanticism is expressed by the function of availability concerning culture as well as education. The liberation current of the Romanticism is related with the French tradition, peoples as a subject that debates on the ideas of justice and injustice, and also with the folklore along with the independence narrative. The titular category namely, democratization of culture should be understood as a multifaceted phenomenon of the gradual and irreversible processes of innovations which have spread through the spheres of culture, language, system of forms of utterance in order to shape various social and cultural institutions, which – throughout the process of generating new literary canons and redefining modern national identities – eventually contributed to the constitution of the contemporary states.

This article discusses the notion of magic in the poetics of Marina Tsvetaeva (1892–1941) against the backdrop of romanticism and Russian modernism. Magic is related to the poet’s explorations  of folklore,  and  also  to  Romantic,  symbolist  and  futurist  invocations  of  it. Concepts  of  magic  are central  to  Tsvetaeva’s  poetics;  she  considers  conjuration  to  be a  property  of  language  that facilitates  contact  with  the  demonic,  elemental  and  natural aspects of the world. These elemental aspects are not to be considered merely as the poet’s mythologisations of the world, but also as her reflections on the capacity of poetic language to speak of what is otherwise hidden in the world.

The author of the article focuses on introducing and interpreting the dispute over Slavic philosophy that took place in the 1840s in Slovak magazines (between J.M. Hurban, C. Zoch and P.Kellner-Hostinský). This dispute is an important testimony of the era, it concerned the fundamental issues of the time: the identity of Slovak culture, its philosophical background, its place and role in the Slavic world, its attitude to tradition. The author of the article focused primarily on two aspects of the “slovanská veda” project: the relation to German philosophy and the key cognitive category “viďeňja.” The author also points to the role that this dispute played in shaping the model of Slovak culture. Since the Slovak Romantic literary discourse has recently been enriched by many new revisions, the author also briefly refers, sometimes polemically, to the latest research.

Opis:
Adolfo Veber Tkalčević (1825–1889) a Croatian philologist, writer, passionate traveler and a Catholic clergyman is the author of the first Croatian account of the travel to the Croatian “Lake District” Put na Plitvice (Road to Plitvice, 1860). As a travel narrative, this book has a “worldbuilding” potential, introducing the Plitvice Lakes to Croatian culture, to the national landscape. In this article, I focus on the culinary theme of the trip. One of its side goals was savouring the trouts, but throughout the entire trip the tables of wanderers did not want to fill with them, offering the text-forming abundance instead. The journey “around the empty table” is a kind of self-portrait of “explorers” ready for a “heroic” attitude for the common good. Bearing in mind the specificity of Croatian Romanticism, which this work represents, I read the text in a cultural, anthropological and identity context, referring to the classics of discourse, and devoting less attention to travel studies.

In this paper I analyze one of the first collections of poems for children in the SCBM language, Niz dragocijenoga bisera ili Duhovne i moralne pjesme za djecu by Jovan Sundečić (Zadar 1856, Cetinje 1865). Although many have stated that it is one of the first original publications intended for children and young readers of the South Slavic area, there has been no detailed analysis of it until now. In the introductory part of the paper, I will look at the circumstances which led to creation of literature for children and young people, in the central part, through the analysis of Sundečić’s book, I will show why Romanticism in children’s literature inevitably intertwined with Enlightenment, and I will try to illuminate the socio-historical circumstances that led to the reprint. In the conclusion, I make an evaluation of the book from the viewpoint of Romanticism, as the period in which it was created, as well as the contemporary moment, which tends to mark the timeless literary qualities.

One of the distinctive traits of Romantic literature was its frenetic feverishness and frightening otherness, the embodiment of which was, among many other beings, the vampire. This character in neo-Romantic contexts was sometimes invoked by the representatives of Croatian poetry of the late twentieth century. However, in its different currents it performed a different task. War and martyrdom poetry collected in the anthology “U ovom strašnom času” used the specter for the creation of a portrait of the enemy, while using the familiar clichés of Renaissance variant of Croatian romanticism. Branko Maleš’ vampiric themes merge into an indivisible whole with references to contemporary consumerism and co-create an ironic self-portrait of a postmodern neo-Romanticist. Maleš reaches for the themes of romantic strangeness and deconstructs them in a ludic manner.

The article aims to explore the status of the Slovene language and literature, as well as Slovene culture during the Romantic period in the context of historical events which informed them as a result of the creation of the alphabet by Adam Bohorič in the 16th century. During the 19th century, in Slovenia an “orthographic war” was being waged. Its goal was to establish the one and correct version of the alphabet and the definitive spelling rules for the Slovene language. The debate about language erupted between the group under the leadership of Matia Čop (of which France Prešeren was a member) and the followers of Jernej Kopitar. The dispute involved a number of issues connected to Slovene literature and culture, and the status of Slovenia in Europe. Arguments in the debate were exchanged via publications, (e.g. Slovenska abecedna vojska), poetry (Satirical Sonnets and epigrams) and engaged a wide spectrum of topics such as the dialects of the Slovene language or literary criticism.

In Romantic aesthetics there is an interpretive category of the poetry of the cultures of the North – including the Scandinavians, who were familiar with the “poetry of the night and the graves” – which expressed ferocity, gloom, harshness, melancholy, internal tensions. Maria Janion repeatedly referred to the parallel between Polish and Scandinavian literatures, writing: “It is good that there are despairing Scandinavians in the world.” This article will focus precisely on the aesthetics of Romantic “existential despair” and “gender despair” in the context of the poetry created by a Swedish woman, Karin Boye, and a Polish woman, Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, with particular emphasis on their last poems, written in the late 1920s and early 1930s. And although they do not create in the Romantic era – they implement Romantic aesthetics in their poetic program.

This paper deals with the discursive phenomenon of reflexivity in the epic poetryof South Slavic romantic poets around the middle of the 19th century. Reflection is here understood as a kind of poetic self-formation procedure of romantic literary subject and his efforts to renovate epic mode in its original form. Starting with concept of “epic Romanticism”, in a way specific to South Slavic literatures, the author proceeds by distinguishing basic modes: explicit, implicit, and intertextual reflexivity. While the first two are related to typical romantic affectivity (D. Demeter, F. Prešeren) and/or rhetoric identification with oral folk rhapsodists’ tradition (P. P. Njegoš), the third one is marked with so-called “integration story” (I. Mažuranić), or mise en abyme, i.e. “the mirror in the text” effect as a medium of artistic auto-perspectivization and possible creative invention which leads to indications of the early pro-modern poetic procedures.

Put na Plitvice (The Road to Plitvice, 1860) is the first of the travelogue in Croatian language describing an expedition to the Croatian Lake District. The work of art is of significant “world-creating” and “culture-creating” value, introducing the Plitvice Lakes into the Croatian national text and into the national landscape, hence the biblical allusion in the title. It will therefore be a world-creating narrative, of bringing into existence and therefore giving a symbolic dimension of the work of art.I focus on the landscape-painting aspects of the text, understanding landscape as the manner of constructing and formulating the world, as a way of perceiving and incorporating it into cultural traditions. It is therefore rough, monumental, wild like a traversed space, which should be included in the category of picturesque and sublimity. Veber’s representation of nature illustrates how it was seen at the time within the framework of the national-revival programmes

Opis:
Croatian Romanticism uses a multitude of Judeo-Christian motifs. Kranjčević’s Moses enters into a direct dialogue with God, who is not only a distant transcendental authority, but also a concrete being who responds to the people’s cries. When Moses indicates dissatisfaction with his people’s slavery, God reciprocates with both words and actions. The objective of this article is to look at thedialogues between man and God in the poem Moses in order to contribute to the research of the theme of communication between man and God in Croatian romantic poetry. The main subject of the poem is Moses, who is culturally more relevant for Judaism than for Christianity; his contribution in the Bible is connected to the struggle and active liberation from slavery. Unlike Christianity, Judaism affirms a revolutionary Messiah. In this poem, Moses is the prototype of a universal man in search of God, whereas communication is a prerequisite for solving individual and collective problems.

The paper presents poetically and politically conditioned changes in the interpretationof the literature of the Croatian National Revival period as “Romantic”.It indicates that these phenomena should necessarily be viewed in mutual (inter)action. It states that the Croatian National Revival, as a period that is most frequently demarcated by the years 1835 and 1848–49 in the so-called general historiography, is a necessary framework for the periodisation and understanding of the history of Croatian literature too. This framework does not exclude the necessity of including the concept of Romanticism in the study of Croatian literature of this period, which was strongly influenced by Romantic trends. And consequently it is a stage in a longer period of manifestation of Romantic features in Croatian culture and literature of the 19th century.
