Opis:
The article discusses the book by Diana Ivanova История на новобългарския книжовен език – a new textbook on the history of literary Bulgarian language. Starting from a discussion of terminology related to concepts the Old Bulgarian and New Bulgarian language, first presents the history of the scientific discipline as the history of the New Bulgarian literary language (NBKE), and then the textbooks used so far in the university didactics. It is necessary to indicate a new content of the discussed monograph, in which a significant novum is the different perception of the beginnings of NBKE and chapters on the activities of the literary society from Brasov and biblical translations into a language understandable to the reader in the 19th century.

The author is an Ottoman specialist known worldwide and one of the greatest novelists in Bulgaria. In her novels, she portrays philosophical and geopolitical ones that characterize the historical epoch embodied in her works.

The article is devoted to a reflection on the category of time in Georgi Gospodinov’s novel Vremeubežiŝte (2020), where the author undertakes a reflection on the processes of culpable and non-culpable self-destruction of societies that have rejected the rules of Enlightenment rationalism. Using the tools of dystopia, he creates a world gripped by collective madness, the sources of which he derives from extra-literary reality and links to contemporary political and cultural processes. Leszek Kolakowski’s concept of time as the vault of the human home, which is based on four pillars: reason, God, love, death, remains the philosophical point of reference for my deliberations. In turn, the concept of retroutopia of the sociologist of culture Zygmunt Bauman provided me with tools to reflect on a new type of rationalism after the conservative turn. René Girard’s concept of mimetic competition was helpful in considering the structure of the world presented in the novel.

The aim of this article is to explore the most recent literary representations of the so-called “Revival process” in Bulgarian history or the renaming of the Bulgarian Muslim and Turkish minorities in the 1980s in Zlatko Enev’s Requiem for Nobody (Реквием за никого, 2011), Martin Marinov’s The Veil (Булото, 2014), Miroslav Penkov’s The Stork Mountain (Щъркелите и планината, 2016), and Liudmila Mindova’s Novel for the Name (Роман за името, 2017). The analysis focuses on the outlining of the thematic and structural similarities between the novels and the different approaches toward the depiction of trauma. I argue that this new trend is an attempt to rethink the legacy of the communist past and conceptualize collective trauma.

Stemming from the general postcolonial theoretical tradition, the concept of self-colonisation proposed by the Bulgarian scholar Alexander Kiosev has proved inspiring to Polish scholars. This article attempts to examine more closely Kiosev’s meandering self-reflective musings on what he called his “metaphor” of self-colonization, an idea he ultimately rejected in view of the undesirable ressentiment it tends to produce. By illustrating the historical and cultural background underpinning the concept of self-colonisation I seek to identify the roots of potential intercultural misunderstanding. Above all, I focus on the consequences of the teleological approach inherent in Kiosev’s concept. Those are expressed in identifying manufactured (sic!) origins with an account which can be couched in the language of a politically and therapeutically conditioned method of research. This leads to a symmorphic deformation of those origins, aligned to the requirements of the modern world.

Opis:
This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book Динамика и иновации в лексикалната система на българския език, published in 2019 in Plovdiv. The book consists of nine parts, each dealing with a different type of linguistic processes (archaisation, terminologisation and determinologisation, lexicalisation, univerbation, neologisation, internationalisation) occurring in the lexical system of contemporary Bulgarian. Linguistic changes in the lexical sphere are presented in the context of dynamic changes in the methods of communication, determined by non-linguistic reality. The monograph deals with new vocabulary, from the end of the 20th century to the present day. It contains a synthetic review of certain positions within the scope of the discussed linguistic processes. An effort was also made to organise the terminology used in Bulgarian linguistic studies. The advantage of the monograph resides in the original propositions for the interpretation of individual phenomena and the author’s own propositions for definitions. What makes the publication particularly interesting is the presentation of an experimental study in the field of examining language competence and language memory of those Bulgarian language users who represent the generation of today’s students.

Opis:
The article raises the question of functioning of Cyrilo-Methodian tradition in the Bulgarian culture in the conditions of modernity. The subject of analysis is the traditional and originally religious notion of the “Slavic / Bulgarian enlighteners”. It is argued that Cyril and Methodius are presented as patrons of enlightenment, first understood as education, and then as an historical epoch, and that is why they become absolute role models of a citizen, a Bulgarian, an Orthodox, a communist. The conclusion is that the starting point for understanding the modern narrative about the creators of Slavic alphabet should be the idea of enlightenment, which in the course of time has been secularized and concretized.

In 2006 for the first time after more than 30 years a new translation of Aesop’s fairy tales into Bulgarian by Vladimir Atanasov was published. Aesop’s tales were also translated into Macedonian for the first time (by Valerij Sofronievski) and published in 2008. The article contains discussion and comparison of both translations. A collection of both volumes and classic editions of Aesop’s tales were described and translations were made from them. The authoress precedes her arguments with a short outline of the history of Aesop’s translations into Bulgarian. Particular attention is paid to the translation of bishop Sofroni from the early 19th century, because both discussed contemporary translations clearly refer to this work.

The article focuses on the selected cognitive aspects of the interpretation of meaning of Polish and Bulgarian compounds with the eco-component in the journalistic discourse. According to the assumptions suggested by J. Bartmiński and S. Niebrzegowska-Bartmińska, I define discourse as „a processual and contextual conceptualization of a «communication event» whose objective «created» conceptualization is text”. I provide the composites present in Polish and Bulgarian journalistic discourse with a critical eco-linguistic comment. The analysis made on texts being the  objective conceptualization  of  the  journalistic  discourse  proves  semantic  under-specification of the eco-component. In many structures, this component loses the meaning content in the sense of denotation, while it carries a certain axiological judgment, becoming a kind of emotive operator that makes it easier to manipulate the meaning.

Krwawa egzekucja wszystkich członków 52 zbuntowanych rodów stała się immanentnym symbolem powstania chrześcijańskiego państwa bułgarskiego i zajęła ważne miejsce w powieściach historycznych przedstawiających dzieje średniowiecznego państwa.
The foundations of the medieval Bulgarian state are inseparably paired with the adoption of Christianity. At that time an event occurred which based on modern terminology ought to be described as coup d’état. As a consequence a cruel punishment was administered by the ruler, prince Boris. A bloody execution of all the 52 rebelled houses became an immanent symbol of the rise of the Christian Bulgarian state and plays an important role in the novels related to the history of the medieval period of the state. The literary vision of the Bulgarian authors of the socialist era presents that tragic occurrence almost as a founding murder and in accordance with Foucault interpretation as a bloody spectacle of suffering that was a demonstration of the power of the sovereign over his subjects, and following Girard can be described as specific collective sacrifice.

Bulgarian works of a non-religious nature began to be written in the 19th century. They popularized a specific vision of a new literary language and contained suggestions of terms from various fields. Sophronius, bishop of Vratsa belonged to the group of writers who significantly influenced the shape of New Bulgarian literary language. By translating Aesop’s fables into a language understandable to Bulgarians, he laid the foundations of Bulgarian animalistic terminology. The author analyses 66 names of animals contained in the fables translated by Sophronius, indicates their origin and the reasons for using a specific term. She further examines which of these terms are still used, and which have become archaisms or have survived only in folk dialects.
