Opis:
One of the key representations of Serbia between the two world wars in British and American travel accounts is the one about a child. Set in the context of Orientalism and postcolonial tradition this representation is usually interpreted as infantilization that reflects the marginalization and symbolic position of Serbia and the Balkans outside the mainstream of world politics and economy. As the academic discourse is mostly occupied with orientalism and postcolonialism, this paper focuses on symbolic and mythological potential of the discourse analysis about Serbia—“the child of Europe.” The paper analyses three forms of infantilization of Serbia in the interwar travel accounts, while each chapter is dedicated to specific form of infantilization: 1. Serbia as an orphan of Europe; 2. Serbs as medieval people (unspoiled by civilization and vital); 3. Their “temperament” reveals cultural, and thus, political immaturity. The analysis is based on Darren Kelsey’s discursive-mythological approach and it draws a conclusion about the interconnection between the child’s image, culture, historical circumstances, internal/external representation and affective archetypes.

Opis:
In Serbia, in the aftermath of 5 October 2000, the process of desecularization, including the revitalization of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), overlapped with the democratization of its political institutions, as well as with the political and social pluralism. The desecularization of the Serbian society had already started in the socialist Yugoslavia, but the process itself intensified in the early period of political pluralism and establishment of the democratic political institutions. Is Orthodoxy compatible with democracy, viewed not only as the will of the majority or an election procedure, but also as a political culture of pluralism and rule of law? Is Orthodoxy possible as a “civic” church, in line with the European political tradition of democracy and pluralism? The author contends that the contemporary Orthodoxy, including the SOC, accepts globalization in its technical, technological and economic sense, with a parallel tendency towards cultural fragmentation. Thus one needs a consensus between the SOC, state and society in Serbia concerning the basic values, such as: democracy, civil society, pluralistic discourse, secular tolerance and individual human rights.

After the death of her husband, Milica founded the Ljubostinja monastery and became the nun Jevgenija. She was a close friend to the famous Serbian poet Jefimija, who accompanied princess Milica in the diplomatic mission to the Sultan’s court in 1398/1399. She died in 1405. She was canonized by the Serbian Orthodox Church. She appears also – as „tsaritsa Milica” – in Serbian folklore (epic poetry).

Opis:
The dispute about the autocephaly of the Macedonian Orthodox Church (MOC), one of the questions within the discourse on the Macedonian national identity since 1967, gained new significance after 1991, as a consequence of the political emancipation of the Republic of Macedonia (RM). This issue is strongly associated with other concerns, such as the country’s internal integration and the struggle to strengthen its sovereignty. In order to support the MOC the authorities attempt to rally the ethnic Macedonians around the idea of national independence and diminish the influences of other Orthodox Churches on the followers of this denomination in RM. Year 2002 saw the failure of the religious consultation and an imminent schism within MOC. It prompted the authorities to act as a guarantor of the undivided jurisdiction of the MOC over the country’s entire territory. This course of action resulted in worsening of the relations with the neighboring Orthodox Christian countries, since the governments cooperate with their respective Churches to contest the independence of MOC. Moreover, since 2002 the issue of MOC’s status is frequently presented within the context of accusations against the RM’s authorities of breaching the civil and religious rights.

Opis:
The painting of Katarina Radojlovic1 , gone too soon as it happens too often in life, carries inherently and by its nature the autobiographical features that do not allow factual interpretations and anecdotal storytelling. Furthermore, the painter’s need to touch the “impersonal” without losing her own identity, however paradoxical it may sound, makes difficult any attempt to classify or rank her artistic opus within the existing courses of the contemporary Serbian art scene. After all, what’s the point of classification since during the process of creating the author was crystal clear about her painting being first and foremost cosa mentale. It is actually a form of searching for her, dealing with loneliness and meaningless in an effort to rediscover the meaning of reality via work of art that will by its own standards seek to establish a relationship between form and function of visual expression. This effort, we would say, is quite clearly to be identified in the last cycles of her artistic opus: Theatre of Shadows, Moonlight Stories and Imprint of a Shadow.

Opis:
The article addresses the presence of the avant-garde in the discourse and the practice of social resistance in Serbia at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The focal point of the text is the thesis that nowadays the avant-garde resonates not so much as an artistic formation, but as an ideological complex. The author investigates the manners of contemporary transposition of ideas and avant- garde imagination through the analysis of the activities of the Centre for Cultural Decontamination in Belgrade. Using the examples of two programmes: Modernism, Serbian National Identity in 20th Century and En Garde – Avant-Garde 20/21, the author shows how the local experience of the interwar avant-garde and the neo-avant-garde formed within the movement of ʼ68 protests, creates a specific ideological current, a model of self-organization and a pattern of activities bordering between art and socio-political reality. In the 1990s, in Serbia, it becomes the reference system for artivism (an approach consisting in influencing social and political reality through art), and today still remains an inspiration for independent intellectual and artistic environments and for critical institutions that create an alternative and polemic cultural space to the official policies of the Serbian authorities.

Opis:
During the times of Dositej Obradović (1739–1811), i.e. the period of Enlightenment in Serbia, advanced ideas were best spread through literature and the translation of contemporary authors was very common in Serbian literature. Obradović was the first to point out the importance of translation to the Serbs. He advocated the development of literature and culture modelled after more advanced cultures and based on the translation of useful works; he also believed that translation must adapt to the nature of target language. His views particularly influenced same writers from the region of Croatia, namely Pavle Solarić and Jovan Došenović, who were friends also. Solarić translated philosophical, geographical, historical and other documents, while Došenović, under the influence of others, compiled an arithmetic book, as well as the first collection of lyric poetry in recent Serbian literature, with the use of the imitatio procedure too. Translation influenced the genre, subject, style, and especially the linguistic development of Serbian literature.
