Opis:
The paper begins by asserting that the historical novels of Ksaver Šandor Gjalski have received special treatment in Croatian literary historiography, which tends to ascribe to them a more a documentary and historiographic rather than literary value. This paper will analyse the Romantic, realist and modernist features of Gjalski’s historical novels Osvit. Slike iz tridesetih godina (Dawn. Pictures from the [18]30s) (1892) and Za materinsku riječ. Slike iz četrdeset osme godine (For the Maternal Word. Pictures from [18]48) (1906). In the light of theories of histories as stories (narratives), this paper will indicate that their so-called documentary value isattributable to literary strategies that are used to interpret the past they represent in a specific way, and not to record what is assumed to be the authentic past.

Opis:
This article deals with the constructions of „Matoš” in Croatian histories of literature. Central for the study is Alum Munslow’s thesis that history cannot be „non-narrative”. In that respect the relationship between hi/story and narrative genre is studied on examples of how the „character” of Antun Gustav Matoš, one of the most famous Croatian writers from the beginning of twentieth century, is both perceived and constructed in historical narrative and in philological context that is discursively circled by the narrative.

Opis:
This paper is the analysis of Götz and Meyer (Gec i Majer, 1998) by David Albahari (b. 1948), the writer of Serbian and Jewish origin. His novel belongs to the Holocaust-literature and its metanarrative structure calls into question the problem of transferring radical historic moment into fiction. The article focuses on the interrelations between fiction and fact, imagination and history, as well as the traumatic experience recognized as the opportunity to identify with the experience of Holocaust victims. Albahariʼs novel proves that remembering of dramatic events from the past can be activated both by imagination and traumatic experience.

ntrinsic and extrinsic approaches to literary history
Opis:
The paper presents poetically and politically conditioned changes in the interpretationof the literature of the Croatian National Revival period as “Romantic”.It indicates that these phenomena should necessarily be viewed in mutual (inter)action. It states that the Croatian National Revival, as a period that is most frequently demarcated by the years 1835 and 1848–49 in the so-called general historiography, is a necessary framework for the periodisation and understanding of the history of Croatian literature too. This framework does not exclude the necessity of including the concept of Romanticism in the study of Croatian literature of this period, which was strongly influenced by Romantic trends. And consequently it is a stage in a longer period of manifestation of Romantic features in Croatian culture and literature of the 19th century.

Opis:
The article analyses two methods from the scholarly oeuvre of a great Polish Croatian and Slavic studies scholar Joanna Rapacka (1939–2000). These two methods are very interesting and in a particular manner topical, especially in Croatian philology: due to a reconstruction of historical poetics and research of sources, and because of a deconstruction of national myths and national essentialism in literary historiography. These two approaches are closely linked in an attempt to understand an older, pre-modern literary culture in its original, epochal context.
