The article discusses bruchsünden und todstücke, a book of selected poems by Witold Wirpsza, translated into German by Maria Kurecka. The book was published in 1967 in the “rot” series published in Stuttgart and edited by Max Bense and Elisabeth Walther, with typography by Hansjörg Mayer. The article demonstrates how the peculiar design of the book, as well as the connotations of the publishing series, and Wirpsza’s interests, allow us to read the book as a translation of a Polish image of language poetry into a G erman concept of experimental poetry book, especially in concrete poetry.

The paper looks at two book-length poems by Alice Oswald’s: Dart (2002) and Memorial (2011) as translation projects, with an aim to understand both the nature of Oswald’s poetic practice and her concept of what is the meaning and goal of translation in creative work. I claim that translation, in the special sense the poet gives to this term, is at the very core of her work. In my analysis I concentrate on the physical aspect of Oswald’s poetic practice, the role of the body, movement in space, muscular effort, rhythm and memorization of poetry in her projects. I also look at the ways of crossing the divide between the human and non-human, linking language to the voice of the natural world and returning to oral poetry in her work.

The essay concerns the work of Joanna Mueller, who is one of the main representatives of polish linguistic poetry. Her project combines the tradition of linguistic poetry and body experience. This strategy requires the development of a new understanding of the language, which will no longer be conceived as a trap references, but rather as one of many elements of reality. The best way to describe the work of the poet’s imagery is stratification, both in terms of the attitudes adopted by Mueller, by the subjects, to the construction of the poem. Equally important it seems to be the prospect of motherhood, both in terms of artistic activity, as well as the practices of life.

Opis:
The sketch discusses the “relations and interdependencies of impossibilities” connecting the discursive poetry of Bieńkowski with the lyrical poetics of Leśmian. This formula, coined by the author of Sprawy wyobraźni, perfectly expresses these kind of references that exceed just a simple juxtaposition of similarities in subject matters or poetical figures. In terms of this plane, there seem to be are more differences between the two poems than conceivable similarities. However, within the plane of creative philosophy, the awareness of the language status in modern poetry, the abiding concept of reality and the attitude towards civilizational and social transformations, the similarities are particularly striking. The avant-garde poet does not shun from employing early modernist individualistic, idealistic, regressive and aesthetic (formalistic) tendencies so characteristic for Leśmian. If Przyboś, as Łapiński put it, “rehabilitated” Leśmian’s programme, Bieńkowski makes the Przyboś’ programme back again more like Leśmian-like, creating a programme not so much avant-garde in character but rather a one that relates to decadent aspirations of modernism in its narrowest sense. Not surprisingly then, he makes the lyrics of the author of Łąka his particular tertium comparationis of the phenomena in Polish postwar poetry, linguistic poetry in particular. This way, unusual power of modernity of Leśmian poetry is testified and well proven.

In the present article Andrzej Sosnowski’s poems is analysed against the theoretical principles elaborated by Ezra Pound. Pound’s postulates such as the ideogrammic method and the melo-, fano-, and logopoeia, all of which are briefly discussed, are used to characterise Sosnowski’s poetic practice. The article shows that, irreducible differences notwithstanding, both poets write in accordance with a set of similar principles. The difference between Sosnowski’s poems and Pound’s Cantos consists mainly in the fact that the former gives up on the inherently Poundian desire to reorganise reality in an epic work and seeks what may be termed a scene of voice on which one’s ownmost identity can be manifested. It is among the many discourses that comprise poems that a voice of life sounds in all its complexity and fragility.

Opis:
The article discusses the issue of textile metaphor and its function in Stanisław Barańczak’s poetry – a topic that used to be discussed mainly in relation to women’s poetry. In his poems, Barańczak uses elements of garments as a means to capture abstract and often dangerous aspects of existence and as a symbol of a system or a characteristic of citizens living in a specific time. Textile metaphor allows him to expose the falsehood of the system and the threat of totalitarianism, while also constituting part of a dissident’s everyday equipment. References to parts of garments are a way to present the poetic programme and the ambiguous role of an artist. In a ‘disguised’ and dangerous world of poetry marked by a secret difficultto ‘uncover’, one is, in a way, sentenced to dress against the requirements imposed on them by reality.

The bilingual poetry of Irena Klepfisz, a Polish-born Jewish-American poet, seems to constitute a unique case of Holocaust poetry. The poet, an intellectual and activist engaged in lesbian, queer, feminist and gender movements, advocates the reading of Holocaust poetry within the ramifications of gender oriented cultural theories. Her bilingual poetry undermines the hypothesis of the postvernacularity of contemporary Yiddish. The paper substantiates the thesis that the choice of the target language in the translaton of bilingual Holocaust poetry has clear axiological underpinnings.

This paper deals with the problems of time and temporality in the poetry of Bogusława Latawiec ranging from one of her first volumes of poetry (Przestrzenie  [Spaces ], 1975) to the recently released Zmowy  [Collusions] (2015). The passage of time, various ways of perceiving and sensing it are the overarching themes of her oeuvre (both prose and poetry). Her poetry, characterized by a remarkable linguistic discipline, a skillful use of formal devices and a close connection between the images and the sonic layer of her poems, highlights the importance of linking the experience of time and its passage with the issues of subjectivity and identity. Personal time converges here with historical, physical and mechanical time. It gains a material dimension: it becomes measurable and even tangible. This is noticeable in the poet’s latest minor volumes: Gdyby czas był ziemią  [If time was the Earth ] (2011) and in Zmowy  [Collusions ] (2015).

The present interpretation is an attempt to apply the close reading method to Bohdan Zadura’s poem „Zbuntowane komórki” [Rebellious cells]. The analysis reveals mysterious relations between the motifs of „snowless winter”, memory and a mole in the face of a close person that has been removed by plastic surgery. A juxtaposition of a landscape with a fragment of a portrait evokes particular contexts: that of beauty and aesthetics, healthiness and the unnerving medical examination that may suggest malignant tumor and, first of all, violated identity. The oncological theme intertwines with the ontological problem. In addition, the relations between the presented world in the poem and the texts turn out to be parallel: the „salubrious” classical form of the sonnet, available in the process of interpretation, is conducive to the subjugation of the cancer worry.

Julia Fiedorczuk’s academic, journalistic and critical activity invites readings of her poetry in the context of ecopoetics, which she actively promotes. Her ecocritically oriented poems explore the links between poetry and natural environment, proposing an interdisciplinary practice of cocreation of the human and non-human world, as well as a re-evaluation of our understanding of the relations between them. It is, at the same time, a type of poetry that exposes its gender affiliation; it evokes and deconstructs the culturally instilled associations between femininity and nature, and formulates questions pertaining to identity and metaphysics. With her “woman and world: user’s manuals” project, poetically original yet deeply rooted in (post)modern contexts, Fiedorczuk represents one of the most interesting currents of contemporary – and not just women’s – poetry.

The very relation between possibility of writing and sensitivity is a main concern of this interpretation of Miron Białoszewski’s poetry. At the start, I notice traumatic state of writing subjectivity, which I see as a negative affect. Białoszewski’s trauma manifests itself as an acedia in the Leżenia poetry cycle, in which the poet searches for another, positive affective simulation as well. He finds it in the very work of language, of sounds, and of material reality surrounding him. As he tries to revive himself and his writing mainly through the senses of touching and hearing/listening, I use the model of subjectivity described by Jean-Luc Nancy in the essay On listening,  to understand how creative, writing subjectivity works on sensual and language levels.

The paper investigates manners of linguistic description of psychosomatic, autobiographically interpreted experience in contemporary women’s poetry, which is analyzed in the context of the poetics of the moment, with reference to Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s concept of “poetry as a mode of attention.” The authoress is particularly interested in the figure of paronomasia, evoking homonymic, parallel spheres: the material and the transcendental one. The article contains close reading interpretations of poems by, among others, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Teresa Ferenc, Bogusława Latawiec and Ludmiła Marjańska, in which paronomasia introduces the reader into a dual dimension of existence, both anchoring the subject in the physical, bodily reality and provoking metaphysical questions.

The poem is interpreted as an ironic self-thematic commentary. The poet’s attitude is critical towards different interpretations: conventional, i.e. based on ambiguity, colloquial or stereotypical and academic, inspired by increasingly new theories. The substantial element in the poem is the relation between the subject (persona) and the protagonist that corresponds to and translates into a communicative situation between the author and the reader. The result is complex, intertwined styles and techniques combined with one another. Wiedemann engages in a play with different ways of writing, ironically challenges or undermines poetical strategies to underline the conventionality of literature and communication in general. By doing this, he disturbs the reader by challenging the reader’s reading habits and thus making an impression that the reader is sent away from the poem to a single and unique experience in reality.
