Opis:
The essay is devoted to the life and work of Zofia Chądzyńska, with special focus on three manifestation of her intellectual activity: reading, writing, and translation, and their linguistic relations. The complicated post-war vicissitudes forced the writer to frequent changes in her way of life, and required an effort to adapt to the new reality. Chądzyńska did different jobs, and often changed her place of residence. The point of departure for the present discussion is her work at white-wash laundry in Buenos Aires. The laundry serves as a metaphor for moving from one linguistic space to another, and both spaces seem to be rigidly isolated from one another for Chądzyńska. The essay also refers to James Clifford’s On Ethnographic Self-Fashioning: Conrad and Malinowski. The anthropologist claims that each sphere of life is allotted to a different language: native, transgressive, and the language of restraint. The languages of both authors discussed by Clifford entered into various interferences, however, or replaced one another and created new connections. In Chądzyńska, it is definitely more difficult to see such relations, and her strong self-fashioning techniques reinforce the impression of radical transit from one language sphere to another. The author’s autobiography and her numerous autobiographical acts of expression also provide evidence for research in translation work, which in Chądzyńska can be analysed, for example, in the feminist context.

Opis:
The article is the analysis of the place of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna in contemporary literary discourse. The author of the article claims – using Pierre Bayard’s theory – that the poetess is known “more or less”: she is remembered as someone who got prizes and recognition but at the same time she is impossible to read nowadays. There is political ambiguity and antiquity in her texts that keep her in the past. Marzec points at four areas of literary studies, where Iłłakowiczówna is still present: 1. Poetics: Iłłakowiczówna uses an original and unusual type of the Polish tonic verse. The author of this article analyses it using tools of psychoanalysis. 2. Religious discourse: Iłłakowicz.wna is interpreted as the author of religious poetry but Marzec argues with such interpretations. 3. Post-dependence studies: Iłłakowiczówna has not been analysed in terms of post-dependence studies yet but she is mentioned in the Polish borderlines discourse. 4. Feminist literary criticism: Iłłakowiczówna used to be studied as the author of androgynous poetry, but Marzec points out other motifs such as miscarriage, infanticide or problems of the new woman, like work at government institution, contestation of vitalism and bureaucracy. The aimof this article is to show that writing of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna needs to be read in terms of the history of literature which is devoid of evaluation and judging. Such analysis means going back in terms of modern literary studies which have undergone multiple turns that changed the tools accessible to contemporary critics.

Opis:
The article, while discussing the concept of friendship, presents social and personal relations between the protagonists of Zofia Nałkowska’s fiction. Against the background of tragic social conflicts, numerous shows of disloyalty, trade in women, low motives, and thoughtlessness, the writer points out to friendship as the only worthwhile relationship, even if it brings many disappointments. Apart from her enormous sensitivity to women’s plight, and focus on their mutual solidarity, Nałkowska often focused on friendship between men, representing their emotional engagement and delight of one man in another. In Nałkowska’s fiction, friendship is linked to risk, opening up to otherness, and internalization of the gaze of another human being. Friendly relationships, although they are fleeting and full of ethical tensions, help people to free themselves from their mould, change their character, and escape from dependencies that discipline their desires. Thus, friendship means a personality crisis, weakening of character, and temporary transgression. The passage, a temporary escape from entrenched ways of living, is possible in Nałkowska’s fiction only at the cost of a friendly bond.

The article explores pictures of “a little girl” and of sexual initiation in 20th and 21st-century Polish women’s poetry, especially by Wisława Szymborska, Barbara Klicka, Jolanta Nawrot, Wioletta Grzegorzewska i Małgorzata Lebda. The girlhood showed in their poems is a certain potentiality of womanhood, often imbued with ripening eroticism very difficult to control. At the same time the girlhood is entangled in schematism of potential scenarios destined for a women subject: personal dependence and sense of being dominated, escape or emancipation. Initiatory poems show rather strong dependence on archetypical (The Little Match Girl) and mythicizing conventions of describing adolescence, still they can present idiomatic construction of female identity.

Opis:
Vitalism is a vague and ambiguous philosophical notion which researchers try to apply to describe modernist literature, especially from the period of the Young Poland. The author of the article suggests that vitalism should be approached as an interpretive category. She examines whether it is possible to distinguish feminine vitalism and conducts an analysis of selected types of literature (H. Poświatowska, A. Świrszczyńska, W. Szymborska, A. Szymańska, U. Kozioł, M. B. Kielar). The analysis shows that modernist feminine vitalism in the poetry of the second half of the 20th century encompasses various types of affirmations: of nature, corporeality and existence. In late modernity it transforms into post-vitalism, which signifies new understanding of life and the reduction of the anthropocentric perspective, both determined by new discoveries of science.

The paper applies to the work of one of the most important Polish writers of the last decade. Bargielska combines bold poetic experiments with a keen testimony of an ordinary life of a young woman, who experiences life in the beginning of the 21st century in Poland. On the one hand, the poet declares a conservative worldview (her value system is based on the “trinity”: Catholicism, heterosexuality, motherhood), on the other hand, she brutally and mercilessly uncovers the subjugation of a woman in the world of a male-dominated language. Her writing deconstructs this system, as it discovers the literature as a space for the practice of personal freedom beyond the slogans and ideological divisions; she manages to create her own independent form of existence. The poet renews feminine way of being through the deconstruction of religious myths and cultural stereotypes, confronted with the physiological and social reality.

The article concerns the relationships between terms, frequent in Polish literary criticism, such as “women’s literature”, “women’s press”, “women’s writing”, “literature written by women” and ”Feminist literature”. The author discusses three research books that have been published recently in which slightly different categories have been applied and which, at the same time, focus on the female element of cultural texts. In addition, the author points at multiple tendencies, frequently dissimilar and distinct, in the approach to the relationship between gender and the text. At the same time the author emphasizes a certain disposition manifested by researchers to employ the gender category to judge literary works. Hence, it seems to be quite justified to reopen the Jy women to show them in a new light. The same applies to the surrounding discussions on relevant titles — just as it is the case with publications by Joanna Krajewska, Jerzy Strzelczyk and Kamilla Łozowska-Marcinkowska.

At first Gelbard intentionally chooses poetry, but after the experience of World War II, she leaves it completely and repleces by prose. The root cause of this state of affairs is the war trauma. Very important is also the critical attitude of the writer to her poems. These works have not been appreciated by literary critics who treat them as a document and testimony rather than a valuable poetry. It seems that the Gelbard poems, like all her works, are waiting for a new, contextual reading.

The problem of presenting the traumatic experience of deportation and detention in a concentration camp is still painfully topical, the more so that hitherto existing methods and linguistic strategies provide no useful tools for its investigation, being either frustratingly ineffective, or altogether useless. Over time, a certain regularity in handling the problem has become noticeable, i.e. a distinctive separation of the available accounts of the experience into those provided by women and those evidenced by men. The answer to the question of how to narrate has to be then preceded by an appropriate question on social, cultural and gender identity of the narrator. On the basis of the exemplary accounts by four former inmates of the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau it is possible to understand the specificity and uniqueness of feminine perception of the camp’s reality. The accounts provided by Charlotte Delbo, Liana Millu, Seweryna Szmaglewska and Krystyna Żywulska — all easily identifiable by the different adopted form of message conveyance — share the specificity of women’s subjects raised, aspects closely related to the structure of a woman and her existence in responding to extreme conditions, often omitted in accounts provided by male witnesses. Camp pregnancies, dramatic deliveries, pseudo-scientific experiments, rapes and prostitution — all these constitute additional themes related to by women, victims to the above.

Julia Fiedorczuk’s academic, journalistic and critical activity invites readings of her poetry in the context of ecopoetics, which she actively promotes. Her ecocritically oriented poems explore the links between poetry and natural environment, proposing an interdisciplinary practice of cocreation of the human and non-human world, as well as a re-evaluation of our understanding of the relations between them. It is, at the same time, a type of poetry that exposes its gender affiliation; it evokes and deconstructs the culturally instilled associations between femininity and nature, and formulates questions pertaining to identity and metaphysics. With her “woman and world: user’s manuals” project, poetically original yet deeply rooted in (post)modern contexts, Fiedorczuk represents one of the most interesting currents of contemporary – and not just women’s – poetry.

The author of 19th-century letters, Bronisława Waligórska – a socialist activist – was arrested and imprisoned in the Warsaw Citadel in July 1886.She sent letters from prison to her sister Jadwiga, who visited her in an attempt to satisfy the prisoner’s most pressing needs. The surviving correspondenceis a testimony of the living conditions of the Citadel’s prisoners and the internal life of Bronisława, who was gradually losing her spirit and the will to fight. On December 31, 1886, she swallowed sulphur from matches and died a few days later. Waligórska’s letters are a testimony of the time spent in prison, but not only. In the letters to her sister, she discussed such topics as the conditions of everyday existence, life in prison and organisation, but also included her reflections on culture, literature and art. She tried to fill her time in prison with translation work. The surviving letters have been published in an innovative graphic form and their edition is a breakthrough in editorial work on archival documents. The print meticulously keeps all the corrections and crosses of the original. Monika Rudaś-Grodzka treated Bronisława Waligórska’s letters with great respect; she approached them with a passion and sensitivity of an archivist who not only analyses the content of the remaining documents, but is always aware that they are a testimony of the life of a particular person. Thanks to thepeculiar attitude of the researcher, Waligórska, while being the protagonist of the book, never stopped being its author. The edition of letters from prison are accompanied by an editor’s note, a description of the terms of publications, a timeline, the main protagonist’s prison biography and a selection of documents concerning the investigation.

The author attempts to demonstrate that Narcyza’s features elements of novelistic, feminine polyphony and irony (thanks to the use of the work of literary mothers); such elements were rare in the novelists earlier texts. The second part of the article is devoted to the analysis of the main heroine; the author demonstrates that Nałkowska wants to make the character a problematic and ideological heroine in the Bakhtinian sense. The author analyses the novelist’s techniques of “advancing” Narcyza, and the attempts to extricate the heroine, who is a marriageable maid, from the romance-like situation and to turn her into a serious character in the sense that used to be exclusively possible for male characters.
