Opis:
The article presents a model of personalist biography that stands in opposition to the postmodernist one. The personalist biography model refers in terms of anthropology to Viktor E. Frankl, the founder of logotherapy (‘Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy’) and the key thinkers of the personalist movement: Karol Wojtyła, Mieczysław Krąpiec, Józef Tischner and Czesław S. Bartnik. Stressing the subjective aspect of biography, the personalist model allows for capturing the personal character of the created biographical portrait of a given person while also taking into account the postulates formed by the critics of biographical writing in its traditional and later structuralist forms, especially the postulates related to the requirement of biographer’s objectivity and neutrality. The personalist biography model also takes into consideration the insights of the French theorists on the inevitable involvement of the researcher in the reconstructed picture of a life and the considerations on the character of representation (by F. Ankersmit and M. P. Markowski).

In the article, the inventory of Antoni Malczewski’s belongings, the author of the romantic poem Maria, is published. The document was found in the archive of Jan Feliks Wilski, a nineteenth-century Varsovian notary. The only time the document was sourced was in the biography of Malczewski by Władysław Kazimierz Wójcicki in 1854 (1855). Besides presenting the document, the author collates the rediscovered list with a reading by the nineteenth-century biographer.

Leśmian’s biography
Opis:
The article discusses five biographies of the poet that have been published in the past few years. A highly complex and contradicting figure of Leśmian, a great poet and unsuccessful notary public, a provincial from the capital Warsaw, a misanthrope with busy social life, still arouses interests among the public – the more so that his first biography written by Łopuszański and entitled Leśmian was published as late as 2000. Łopuszański, who has been working on Leśmian for twenty years, has published the results of his biographical investigations in his two subsequent books: Zofia i Bolesław Leśmianowie (2005) and Bolesław Leśmian. Marzyciel nad przepaścią (2006). In turn, Leśmian. Encyklopedia (2001) by Rymkiewicz is a different book being a ”personal” encyclopaedia, a somewhat patchy biography that focuses on arbitrarily selected entries chosen by its author, whereas Leśmian, Leśmian… Wspomnienia o Bolesławie Leśmianie zebrane przez Adama Wiesława Kulika (2008) is a collection of memoirs, a record of conversations that the author had with the inhabitants of Hrubieszów and Zamość who knew Leśmian personally in the 1920s and the 1930s – his colleagues at the Bar, workers of the notary’s office, his acquaintances, neighbours and friends of his daughters.

One special case is the art-biography projectshowing the need to reinterpret the author’s current biographical facts. The reading of texts by Jan Michalski, Magdalena Ziółkowska, Wojciech Grzybała and Andy Rottenberg shows this mechanism – expanding theconstellations of Andrzej Wróblewski.

Opis:
The article consists of two short parts. The first part explores rather theoretical problems chosen by the author during his current work. Among them is the titular problem – the crucial moment in somebody’s life, with all its consequences. The second part contains the opening excerpt from Bobkowski’s biography recently written by the author. According to the researcher, it sets up the biographer’s tone and the whole approach to the subject. This initial part of the upcoming book entitled The Escape is an example of the implementation of the ‘decisive moment’ concept in practice.

The article proposes a new reading of Album biograficzne zasłużonych Polaków i Polek wieku XIX (1901–1903) [Biographic album of distinguished nineteenth-century Polish men and women (1901–1903)]. It is proven that this collection of characteristically designed biographies and an unusual collective biography is an important work of Polish humanities of the turn of the twentieth century that can be placed in relation to both Thomas Carlyle’s hero concept and Jacob Burckhardt’s postulates of the ‘anthropologisation of history’. The three selected biograms (Klaudyna Potocka’s by Aleksander Kraushar, August Hiacynt Dziarkowski’s by Józef Peszke and Adolf Pawiński’s by Jan Karol Kochanowski) are case studies allowing for the reconstruction of the dilemmas and text strategies each time specifying the biographer’s unique workshop and the techniques of uncovering it.

A kind of complementary role to them is played by the analysis of Janina Sedlaczkówna’s 1891 book Dwaj mistrze: opowiadanie o życiu Artura Grottgera i Fryderyka Chopina (Two maestros: a story about the lives of Artur Grottger and Frédéric Chopin) and Teresa Jadwiga Papi’s stories from 1898 of the same title Dwaj mistrze (Two maestros) about Chopin and Moniuszko. The collected comments and conclusions are presented in relation to twentieth- century biographical texts about Chopin.

Opis:
This critical sketch is dedicated to a new biography of Edward Stachura by Marian Buchowski. A writer like Stachura, whose work is very closely intertwined with his life (at least in his declarations) is a challenging protagonist for a biography. In this article, attempts are made at following the way in which Buchowski tries to bring out another human being in the text. His ideas are juxtaposed and confronted with Stachura’s own life-and-art ideas, as to him looking for various methods of recording existence was among the crucial goals of writing. As a result, the thesis is put forward that some sort of a writer’s “totality” is a feature linking Stachura and Buchowski. In this context, the biography written by Buchowski is not only of importance to research into Stachura’s writing but also a significant countersignature of his work.

The essay discusses an issue that has not yet been studied separately: Hannah Arendt and her autobiographical crumbs scattered across other people’s biographies that she wrote and in her own biographies, both literary and cinematic. I called it an attempt at thinking, i.e. a synonym of a (biographical) essay. When Arendt writes about, e. g. Walter Benjamin or Rahel Varnhagen, she also – sometimes – writes about herself. When she smokes a cigarette in a specific way (rather than any other) or speaks German, she creates specific non-verbal doppelganger-like constructions.

Opis:
The article discusses the figure and the work of the poet from the Saxon times in Poland. The first part of the article presents some essential biographical data and his most important literary achievements – from his debut poem Trąba wiekopomnej sławy..., through the translations of the Latin works of Ovid and Lucan, to poems written in the Polish language, such as Biblical poems and other cycles of poems. The other part of the article includes a discussion on the history of the reception of Chrościński’s works and the opinions on his literary output given by literary critics and contemporary historians of literature. Diverse and not equivocal opinions emerge – from decidedly favourable to those more restrained and even critical. However, the popularity of the poems written by Chrościński in the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries is remarkable. This popularity wanes in the course of time and slowly but steadily he becomes an unknown author, rarely recalled and selectively cited. The varied and divergent attitudes of historians of literature make us fully accept the following opinion given by Brückner: “Chrościński highly deserves a closer study of his literary output”. Accordingly, the latter postulate is an invitation to a thorough and deepened investigation of the works of the poet.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at capturing the relationship between the lives and creative attitudes of Rahel Varnhagen, Hannah Arendt and Judith Butler. Starting with Varnhagen’s biography written by Arendt, the essay’s author wonders about the philosopher’s writing strategy. Instead of a classic reconstruction of life, the biographer offers a collage of excerpts from Rahel’s letters with extensive commentary. This form encourages one to read Rahel Varnhagen as a narration about the author and her own struggle with Jewish and female identity. The second relationship analysed in the essay is the impact of Hannah Arendt’s texts on Judith Butler’s writings. Despite the criticism of the philosopher’s writings, Arendt remains an unquestionable inspiration to Butler. The article also emphasises the differencebetween the theoreticians: Arendt uses the strategy of mimicry (writing about identity in the form of a German Jew’s biography), while Butler writes a politically-engaged text, exposing herself and her identity.

Starting from the contemporary trends in biography and referring to findings in the field of anthropology of writing and new materialism, the author analyzes poetic forms created in painting studios. She considers the works of O. Boznańska, W. Weiss and T. Tchórzewski as poetic manifestations of the literary practice of everyday life, a type of poeticised documents. The presence of poetry in artists’ lives is multi-faceted: loose pages preserved in a scrapbook, entries in a journal and autonomous works printed in the press, hence their role in creative biography is different. The common ground is a syncretic perception of creativity; the preserved texts co-create a kind of artistic site where the boundaries between the publication, the exhibition and the project performance blur, requiring special editing operations.

In Journal Written at Night Gustaw Herling analyzes the Peter Schlemihl’s Miraculous Story by Adelbert von Chamisso. The Polish writer (as an émigré) is extremely sensitive to the fate of artists forced to live away from their birthplace and, unlike Thomas Mann, proposes an interpretation according to which the loss of a shadow means the lack of homeland. Herling understands breaking away from his homeland as a kind of physical handicap: an existence without native land. However, if the roots can be found in another soil, it is impossible to regain the shadow. Herling introduces the distinction between hard existence and indeterminacy of feelings of a man eradicated, combining the alienation experienced in Naples with an intangible, but also irreversible loss of a shadow.
