Opis:
The pre-Reformation and Reformation social and religious movements contributed to the development of biblical and religious as well as journalistic and polemical writings, which had a significantly positive impact on the increase in functional efficiency and standardisation of European languages. Translations of The Bible played a special role in the development of European languages as texts with the highest linguistic prestige. Not only did Luther’s Bible (1522–1534) contribute to the unification of German literary language, but its 16th-century translations had an outstanding influence on the development of Dutch and the Scandinavian languages, i.e. Danish, Swedish and Icelandic. The language of Protestant translations of The Bible was regarded in the 16th–17th centuries in France and England as a model of stylistic excellence. Prior to the 16th century, there were fairly rich Celtic writings (Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Cornish), but they were undoubtedly greatly enriched between the second half of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 19th century by Protestant translations of The Bible and other religious texts. The translation work by the Czech brothers (ideological supporters of the Reformation) – Blahoslav’s New Testament (1564) and the Kralice Bible (1579–1593) – is a symbol of the linguistic prowess of the 16th-century Czech language as well as the basis for its rebirth in the 19th century. The linguistic consciousness of the Slovaks was long influenced by the Kralice Bible. Hungarian and Polish Reformation translations of The Bible enriched the history of these languages considerably. A number of European languages owe their actual literary beginnings to the Reformation: Finnish and Estonian (Finnish languages), Latvian and Lithuanian (Baltic languages), Upper Lusatian, Lower Lusatian and Slovene (Slavonic languages). In Croatia, prints financed by Reformation supporters appeared in the 16th century. The Serbian Orthodox New Testament (1847) by Karadžić and The Old Testament (1868) by Daničić were published by the Protestant publishing house of the British Bible Society in London, which also published a translation of the Bulgarian Catholic Slaveykov Bible (1871).

The article presents ways of using motives related to family matters in Old Polish documents written by catholic and Protestant polemicists in both metaphorical and reality oriented content. As the analysed materials shows it was a common practice to use family related motives in religious polemics and to describe real or fictitious pathological phenomena. However, there is no a positive vision of marriage and family in the discussed polemic works. Recalling phenomena unacceptable for the society of that period was aimed at creating a proper image of a religious opponent. However, it led to significant simplification of theological argumentation.

Opis:
The article aims to discuss the names of Reformation-related religious dissenters included in Samuel Bogumił Linde’s Słownik języka polskiego (Polish language dictionary) which are not listed in Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (16th-century Polish language dictionary). The analysis of the material shows that Linde’s dictionary is a valuable, multi-layer complement to the sixteenth-century vocabulary listed inSłownik polszczyzny XVI wieku in the area of names of Reformation-related religious dissenters. First, Linde records sixteenth-century vocabulary related to the religious fractions of the time that is missing from Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku even though it was in use at the time. Importantly, whenever he provides the source of a given lexeme, it is rarely from the sixteenth century. The lexicon also includes feminine forms of believers missing from Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku that originated from the masculine forms listed in both dictionaries. Finally, Linde’s work presents the evolution of each religion and the emergence of new fractions, especially in the Orthodox Churchand post-Reformation churches, hence it includes the names of believers of religions that emerged after the sixteenth century.

The article is devoted to stylistic properties of three pedagogical works that were published in Protestant circles in the 16th century Poland. The first one is the translation from Latin of the treatise written by German Protestant theologian Reinhard Lorichius titled Księgi o wychowaniu i o ćwiczeniu każdego przełożonego (1558), the second one is the Polish publication of Erazm Gliczner’s Książki o wychowaniu dzieci bardzo dobre, pożyteczne i potrzebne (1558) and the third one is the treatise written by the Italian humanist from the 14th and 15th century titled Książeczki rozkoszne a wielmi użyteczne o poćciwym wychowaniu […] dziatek (1564), translated by Marcin Kwiatkowski. The authors of the analysis recognised didacticism, vividness and erudition as the predominant stylistic features of discussed works. They proved that the 16th century books on upbringing of children had been addressed to readers of every denomination and lacked elements of religious polemics on the linguistic and stylistic level. The ideas of the Reformation can be connected mainly with popularization of the Bible, which was used as the source of exempla and sententiae in the works by Lorichius and Gliczner.

Pope Francis’ visit to Sweden and his participation in the inauguration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation triggered numerous reactions, both among German and Polish Catholics. The paper is an attempt to compare these reactions based on texts posted on selected Catholic websites: www.katholisch.de, www.domradio.de, www. kath.de, www.opoka.org.pl, www.deon.pl and www.fronda.pl. The analysis focuses on the following aspects: why the Pope went to Sweden; what and how he celebrated there. In general, German websites demonstrate largely similar stances and opinions formulated on the grounds of openness, kindness and mutual respect whereas opinions on Polish websites are clearly diverse: from liberal ones to the unambiguously conservative ones.

Opis:
The history of the lexeme konfessyjonista shows that the word is a neologism that functioned in the literature of the sixteenth century in connection with religious documents/books, such as the Protestant confessions. Formally and semantically, it refers to Confessio Augustana, also to her Polish translations, and to the Konfesja sandomierska, as well as konfessyja as a kind of genre. In the Reformation and Counter-Reformation period, the word konfessyja was needed by the Protestants; the word konfessyjonista was derived from him by the Catholics for their needs. The lexeme had an offensive tone and referred to a confessional supporter as a supporter of the Reformation. Perhaps the oldest of his certifications comes from an anonymous text from 1561, the year in which two Polish translations of Augustana were announced. The demand for a konfessyjonista noun probably did not go beyond the 16th century, its notations come only from the 60s, 70s and 80s of this century.

This paper discusses the first 3 mentions of the entry LUTER, as a common word, in the Polish language. They were recorded by Bartlomiej of Bydgoszcz in his dictionaries dated 1532 and 1544. According to the analysis made in the article, these are the examples of extremely quick registration of a new word in the Polish language, and most probably the only confirmations of this lexeme in dictionaries in 16th century and two subsequent centuries. The detailed write-up of the location of the entry LUTER in both dictionaries by Bartlomiej allowed the recollection of the lexicographic method applied by the monk and – in comparison with other religious Polish vocabulary – emphasizing the uniqueness of recording the entry LUTER as a common word, only a dozen years after the Reformation.

This article is a language-stylistic analysis of an anonymous translation of the Latin polemical text entitled The Kind, or the Descendants of Martin Luther, the Fifth Evangelist and the Father, who Gave Life to Evangelists and their Christian Congregations, who Fight against the Church of God and against Each Other. The analysis has determined that the main organizing principle of the text is the use of parallelisms and oppositions of the kind “sons of Christianity” v. “sons of Satan”, true (faith) v. sectarian (denomination), unity v. diversity. The evaluative narrative and the way in which the particular fractions within the Lutheran church are depicted illustrate a case of a well-balanced polemical, whose main objective is to prove the inferiority of the Reformed denominations.

The paper discusses the strategy of translation of Marcin Czechowic’s New Testament translation (1577). The authoress applies the theoretical categories of so called global translation strategy such as scopos, the potential reader, religious attitude as Czechowic’s New Testament was devoted to the unitarian communities. It was arranged as a multifunctional book for religious formation which contained institutionalized transmission of God’s Word. Denominational assumptions are manifested in the selection of translation strategy, style, and method of organizing the text in the book. Both the choice of the specific method of translation and the linguistic form of translations such as Iōannēs Baptistēs – Jan Ponurzyciel were marked by denominational optics of interpretation. The development of humanism broadened the general cognitive horizon. Czechowic’s translation was based on humanistic Greek editions of the time. It is not without reason that we find translators’ assurances as to the method of translation on title pages and in introductions, which were expressed by the concept of “diligence” (Lat. diligentia, Pol. pilność), as well as assurances with regard to the translator’s relationship with the source text – faithfulness to the Greek and Hebrew (veritas graeca, hebraica), or following of an “approved” text (Lat. textus probatus, Old Pol. doświadszony) or “contribution” by confronting different records. Marcin Czechowic, like most Protestant translators, declared faithfulness to the Greek source, however his translation of the Holy Scripture ware also in line with the postulate of veritas confessionis, which was interpreted in various ways depending on doctrinal foundations.

Opis:
The author summarises the research conducted so far on the confessional differentiation of Polish religious lexis in the 16th century, which was initiated in the 1960s by Konrad Górski, a literary historian. In his publication Zagadnienia słownictwa reformacji polskiej (The Issue of the Polish Reformation Vocabulary), the scholar argued that Protestants used different words than Catholics to designate important religious concepts, and that lexis was an important factor to identify the denomination. This thesis had a significant impact on the assumptions and research objectives formulated by subsequent scholars who addressed the relationship between denomination and vocabulary. In the section of the article containing research postulates, attention is drawn to thenecessity of verifying Górski’s position, which was already initiated to a limited extent, mainly in the works by Tomasz Lisowski, who pointed out other than confessional determinants of lexical choices in the 16th-century translations of the Bible. It is considerednecessary in the postulated research to broaden the resource base, to take into account the pragmatic diversity of the source texts (sender-receiver relations, intentions), to introduce numerical data objectifying the conclusions, as well as a comparative reference to the status in other languages.

The authors show that on the level of textual criticism and philological solutions, Polish New Testament translators really derived from the achievements of European biblical studies, but remained faithful to the confessional tradition and not to the Greek testimonies. The reception of Reformation at the hermeneutic and theological level looks much worse. Interpreters usually do not take up polemics or defensive positions.

The article presents the genesis and the features of the Renaissance religious writings of the Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the context of the translations of the Bible into national languages. An analysis was performed on a Tatar tefsir, which – according to the most recent research – is a translation of the Qur’an into a European language – the third translation of this kind in the world. Due to the fact that in the 16th century a Polish and even a European Qur’anic translational tradition did not exist, this translation makes reference to the Biblical-psalter literature of the Middle Ages and to the translations of the Scripture of the Reformation, inter alia as far as the selection of the methods and the ways of translation or the adoption of specific translational solutions is concerned. Thus the translation belongs to the translational tradition of sacred books and to the most important trends of Polish and European culture. In this context, a medieval tradition (a continuation of the achievements of translation studies of the 15th c.) and the innovation of the Renaissance overlap. There is an analogy with the 16th-century Biblical printed texts, which also represent a transitional stage – they make reference to a medieval tradition and they also take advantage of the benefits of humanist Biblical studies.
