Opis:
The flying-capacitor (FC) topology is one of the more well-established ideas of multilevel conversion, typically applied as an inverter. One of the biggest advantages of the FC converter is the ability to naturally balance capacitor voltage. When natural balancing occurs neither measurements, nor additional control is needed to maintain required capacitors voltage sharing. However, in order to achieve natural voltage balancing suitable conditions must be achieved such as the topology, number of levels, modulation strategy as well as impedance of the output circuitry. Nevertheless this method is effectively applied in various classes of the converter such as inverters, multicell DC-DC, switch-mode DC-DC, AC-AC, as well as rectifiers. The next important issue related to the natural balancing proces is its dynamics. Furthermore, in order to reinforce the balancing mechanism an auxiliary resonant balancing circuit is utilized in the converter which can also be critical in the AC-AC converters or switch mode DC-DC converters. This paper also presents an issue of choosing modulation strategy for the FC converter due to the fact that the natural balancing process is well-established for phase shifted PWM whilst other types of modulation can be more favorable for the power quality.

Opis:
Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is considered as a good technology for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. It can generate a good quality staircase output voltage waveform due to the cascaded connection of large number of identical sub-modules (SMs). Energy variations in SM capacitor lead to capacitor voltage fluctuations which affect the size and stability of MMC. Traditionally MMC arm voltages are controlled using direct modulation method. The closed loop and open loop compensated modulation methods are implemented to overcome the drawbacks created in direct modulation method. However, these methods rely on the accurate measurements or estimation of SM capacitor voltages. In this paper, capacitor energy variations in MMC based on direct modulation method under three different categories using proportional-resonant (PR) controllers are discussed as (a) pure sinusoidal arm current (b) sinusoidal arm current with addition of large 2nd harmonic (c) sinusoidal arm current with addition of 2nd +4th harmonics. Analytical and simulation results show reduction in capacitor energy variations in MMC while injecting harmonics in the arm currents using direct modulation method.

Opis:
This paper presents the research results of a multilevel switched capacitor DC-DC converter (MLSCC). The converter, for power electronic applications, can operate in ZCS mode by utilizing resonant circuits for recharging the switched capacitors. The main focus of this article is an in-depth original analysis of the waveforms and the converter voltage ratio. The concept of the converter is verified by simulation results of the circuit in MATLAB/Simulink Sim Power Systems. The formulas given in the mathematical analysis are evaluated for example parameters of the components with the use of numerical approach in MATLAB software. Plot sets are presented in order to judge the influence of the parameters on converter performance. All non-expected relations are explained based on mathematical analysis. The possibilities of the design optimization are identified and presented based on the anticipated results. The present analysis is important for the converter design process and can be used for numerical multi-object optimization to further improve the converter design.

Opis:
A new high instantaneous power impulse converter (HIPIC) with a switched capacitor unit has been presented. HIPIC generates very short impulses (hundreds of microseconds) of instantaneous power in megawatt range while the average power is much lower (tens of kilowatts). The presented topology is composed of step-down converters, an H-bridge converter and a switched capacitor, adjusted with a new current control. It allows one to achieve the output current impulses with very short rising and falling times and strict peak current control with low ripples.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of experimental research of a resonant switched capacitor voltage multiplier in a cost-effective topology (CESCVM) with a limited number of active switches. In the charging mode of the switched capacitors, the converter utilizes only one active switch and a required number of diodes. Therefore, the cost of the converter is decreased as compared with that of a classical SCVM converter, owing to a lower number of switches and gate driver circuits, as well as a smaller PCB area. Moreover, the CESCVM has simpler control circuits and higher reliability. This paper presents the original experimental results of the operation of the CESCVM converter. A concept of the bootstrap supply of gate drivers of the flying switches is also examined.

Opis:
The paper considers a discrete state-space model for transients in a three-level flying capacitor DC–DC converter. A transition matrix is obtained for a pulse width modulation (PWM) period. The matrix elements are expanded into a power series using a selected small parameter. The matrix eigenvalues that determine the natural balancing dynamics transients are presented in the form of power series as well. Four separate transients are constructed based on four possible PWM period initial states (topologies). Inductor current and capacitor voltage transients are found for the voltage source power-up as the arithmetic average of the four separate transients. The discrete solutions are replaced by continuous ones. The resulting transients that are elementary functions of the circuit parameters, PWM period, and voltage reference demonstrate good agreement with the simulation results.

A 4-level flying capacitor converter (FCC) operation is considered on a base of discrete state-space model. A transition matrix is obtained for a pulse width modulation (PWM) period for small normalised voltage command values [0, 1/3]. The transition matrix elements are expanded into power series by small parameters. The matrix eigenvalues are presented in the form of power series as well. Six separate transients are constructed for six possible initial FCC states on a PWM period. Inductor current and capacitors’ voltage transients are found for the voltage source power-up as the arithmetic average of the six separate transients. Finally, the discrete solutions are replaced by equivalent continuous ones. Simple and accurate formulas for inductor current and capacitors’ voltage transients demonstrate good agreement with simulation results.

This paper proposed a new voltage-boosting 13-level switched-capacitor (SC) cost-effective inverter. The proposed topology comprises fourteen transistors, three capacitors and a single DC source to produce a 13-level staircase waveform. The capacitor voltage balancing problem is inherently solved by the series/parallel technique. Structural description, working principle, calculation of optimum values of capacitance and modulation scheme are briefly described. The comparative analyses with the existing SC multilevel inverter (MLI) in terms of voltage gain, blocking voltage, total standing voltage (TSV), component per level factor and cost function illustrate the merits of the proposed topology. Further, simulation and experimental results at different loading conditions verify the feasibility of the proposed topology.

This article proposes a novel three-phase inverter based on the concept of switched capacitors (SCs), which uses a single DC source. A three-phase, seven-level line-to-line output voltage waveform is synthesised by the proposed topology, which includes eight switches, two capacitors, and one diode per phase leg. The proposed topology offers advantages in terms of inherent voltage gain, lower voltage stresses on power switches, and a reduced number of switching components. Additionally, the switched capacitors are self-balanced, thereby eliminating the need for a separate balancing circuit. The proposed structure and its operating principle, the self-balancing mechanism of the capacitors, and the control strategy are all thoroughly explained in the article. The proposed topology has also been compared with some recent SC topologies. Lastly, the proposed topology has been shown to be feasible through simulation and experimentation.

This paper presents a novel concept of a circuit for voltage balance of three series-connected capacitors or batteries, as well as the research results. The problem is related to the control of voltage sharing on series capacitors, supercapacitors or battery banks in energy storage systems or direct current (DC)-link of four-level neutral-point-clamped inverters. The proposed circuit is a switched-capacitor (SC) resonant converter composed of a single capacitor and seven transistor switches. Control of the converter makes it possible to transfer energy between any capacitors, by switching selected transistors. This paper presents the basic concept of the converter, an analysis of control strategies and the simulation results for various cases of voltage balancing.
