Opis:
This paper presents the concept and implementation of an electronic system for a switched-capacitor DC-DC converter with high voltage gain. The converter consists of seven switches, five of which being controlled like high-side type. This paper presents a non-typical bootstrap-based gate-driver system so that the converter can run using a single voltage source. The converter requires a special switching pattern to drive seven switches in a steady state and also during the start-up of the converter and the regulation of the output voltage. Therefore, an FPGA-based digital control system is used with various switching algorithms and protection functions implemented. The presented converter is an autonomic device that taps the energy from the main input. Therefore, the electronic system of the converter is equipped with a self-supply system with a wide range of the input voltage. The parameters of the converter such as voltage gain, voltages and power ranges can be scalable for prospective applications with the proposed control system.

Opis:
This paper proposes a transformerless dual half-bridge converter (TLDAHB). By eliminating the transformer and harnessing the possibility of using a low inductor value, it is possible to minimise the size of the converter. A phase-shift pulse width modulation will result in a wide controlled voltage gain of the converter and operation as buck and boost. The theoretical topology analysis, simulation, and experimental results are presented. Theoretical analysis consists of analysis of power transfer and design. In case of experimental research, particular attention was paid to power transfer and efficiency analysis. Near zero switching transient of voltage in the half-bridge topology results with high efficiency.

Opis:
In the last decades, electric power produced through photovoltaic conversion has been increasing because of the need to reduce fossil fuel burning. Recently, photovoltaic systems have become more competitive and their role in the renewable energies market share is steadily gaining in importance. Improvements in the power electronics employed in the DC/AC conversion are topics of interest in the quest for more efficient and eventually reduced-cost inverters. The goal of this paper is to perform an investigation of control strategies and propose a topology for a single-phase DC/AC converter for photovoltaic arrays using the simulation software Power System Computer Aided Design/Electromagnetic Transient Design and Control (PSCAD/EMTDC). The circuit proposed in this paper employs an isolating transformer to a grid-connected photovoltaic inverter. The control strategy proposed uses the instantaneous reactive power theory (p–q theory) and phase-locked loop (PLL). The p-q theory uses two virtual axes in the Park Transformation, which provide to the control system a good dynamic response, accuracy, and decoupling between the control and power system. Computer simulations using the electromagnetic transient software PSCAD show the efficiency of the proposed strategy for a single-phase inverter. The control strategy and topology are quite simple and easy to implement in the future using a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The results provide insights into new power electronics solutions, which can improve the efficiency and efficacy of the current available in DC/AC converters for photovoltaic systems.

This paper presents the results of experimental research of a resonant switched capacitor voltage multiplier in a cost-effective topology (CESCVM) with a limited number of active switches. In the charging mode of the switched capacitors, the converter utilizes only one active switch and a required number of diodes. Therefore, the cost of the converter is decreased as compared with that of a classical SCVM converter, owing to a lower number of switches and gate driver circuits, as well as a smaller PCB area. Moreover, the CESCVM has simpler control circuits and higher reliability. This paper presents the original experimental results of the operation of the CESCVM converter. A concept of the bootstrap supply of gate drivers of the flying switches is also examined.

The paper considers a discrete state-space model for transients in a three-level flying capacitor DC–DC converter. A transition matrix is obtained for a pulse width modulation (PWM) period. The matrix elements are expanded into a power series using a selected small parameter. The matrix eigenvalues that determine the natural balancing dynamics transients are presented in the form of power series as well. Four separate transients are constructed based on four possible PWM period initial states (topologies). Inductor current and capacitor voltage transients are found for the voltage source power-up as the arithmetic average of the four separate transients. The discrete solutions are replaced by continuous ones. The resulting transients that are elementary functions of the circuit parameters, PWM period, and voltage reference demonstrate good agreement with the simulation results.

Opis:
The flying-capacitor (FC) topology is one of the more well-established ideas of multilevel conversion, typically applied as an inverter. One of the biggest advantages of the FC converter is the ability to naturally balance capacitor voltage. When natural balancing occurs neither measurements, nor additional control is needed to maintain required capacitors voltage sharing. However, in order to achieve natural voltage balancing suitable conditions must be achieved such as the topology, number of levels, modulation strategy as well as impedance of the output circuitry. Nevertheless this method is effectively applied in various classes of the converter such as inverters, multicell DC-DC, switch-mode DC-DC, AC-AC, as well as rectifiers. The next important issue related to the natural balancing proces is its dynamics. Furthermore, in order to reinforce the balancing mechanism an auxiliary resonant balancing circuit is utilized in the converter which can also be critical in the AC-AC converters or switch mode DC-DC converters. This paper also presents an issue of choosing modulation strategy for the FC converter due to the fact that the natural balancing process is well-established for phase shifted PWM whilst other types of modulation can be more favorable for the power quality.

This paper presents an extended form of Feedback Linearisation Control (FBLC), which is tested in a non-ideal buck converter in Continuous-conduction Mode (CCM). The FBLC is often used in power electronics to control a non-linear system, due to its advantageous properties. The application of the error integrator shows better steady-state and transient properties, such as a decrease of inrush current. The linearised system has been controlled by the pole placement and the technique is illustrated through an example and simulated via Matlab. The results have been compared by using a classical PID controller, allowing the benefits of FBLC to be highlighted.

Opis:
The article presents an auto-tuning method of state feedback voltage controller for DC-DC power converter. The penalty matrices employed for calculation of controller’s coefficients were obtained by using nature-inspired artificial bee colony (ABC) optimization algorithm. This overcomes the main drawback of state feedback control related to time-consuming trial-and-error tuning procedure. The optimization algorithm takes into account constraints of selected state and control variables of DC-DC power converter. In order to meet all control objectives (i.e., fast voltage response and chattering-free control signal) an appropriate performance index is proposed. Proper selection of state feedback controller (SFC) coefficients is proven by simulation and experimental tests of DC-DC power converter.

Opis:
Power electronics is one of the most important elements of today’s industry. Many of converters applications are being considered as critical for plant production process. Offering enhanced functionality in modern AC drives is a way to gain a competitive advantage in power converters market. One of the values to the customers comes from low cost condition monitoring of critical equipment and from optimized maintenance costs. DC bus is one of the elements of power converters. Although the designers pay a lot of attention when designing DC-link circuit, breakdowns and failures of the DC circuit components can still happen. Unfortunately this means that the whole converter must be shut down in emergency mode to be repaired. Nowadays, monitoring of the bus capacitor is becoming one of the desired features from customer side, as well as from the converter manufacturer. Proposed approach presents a method which assures the online evaluation of the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of a DC-link capacitor. The ESR increase trend is an important indicator of accelerated aging process or incoming failure of the capacitor. The important feature of the proposed condition monitoring method is that it does not require any additional sensors. For estimation purposes already installed sensors and other internal converter’s signals are used. Particularly the method employs the DC-link voltage measurement with the DC-link current reconstruction.

The communication system of a microgrid can transfer the information of electricity price, power consumption and so on between users and the control centre. This capability is of great significance to improve the efficiency and sustainability of power facilities. In this paper, a bidirectional DC–AC converter topology is proposed to achieve the composite transmission of power and signals in microgrids. Since the transmitted signals are modulated by power switches of converters and integrated into the currents, the cost of signal couplers can be saved and the circuit structure can be simplified. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, a simulation model of the proposed converter is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. With the power supply frequency of 50 Hz, when the converter operates in the inverter mode and rectifier mode, the data transmission rate can reach 120 bit/s and 48 bit/s, respectively.
