Opis:
Both permanent magnet brushless DC motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors have attracted wide attention and are increasingly used in industrial high-performance applications in recent years. Those motors are known for their good electrical, magnetic and performance characteristics, but there is one parameter known as cogging torque that has a negative influence on the performance characteristics of the motor. This pulsating torque is generated as a result of the interaction between the stator teeth and the permanent magnets. The minimisation of the ripple of this torque in those permanent magnet motors is of great importance and is generally achieved by a special motor design which in the design process involves a variety of many geometrical motor parameters. In this research work, a novel approach will be introduced where two different nature-inspired algorithms, such as genetic algorithm (GA) and cuckoo search (CS) algorithm are used as an optimisation tool, in which the defined equation for the maximum value of the cogging torque is applied as an objective function. Therefore, a proper mathematical presentation of the maximum value of the cogging torque for the analysed synchronous motor is developed and implemented in the research work. For a detailed analysis of the three different motor models, the initial motor and the two optimised motor models are modelled and analysed using a finite element method approach. The cogging torque is analytically and numerically calculated and the results for all the models are presented.

Opis:
Motion control is facing an increasing popularity in the present research activities. Owing to the expected wide spreading of motion control applications, it can be predicted that the advancements in the field of electric motor drives will have a high level of influence on the new results in the field of motion control. The synchronous reluctance motor drives mean an excellent and yet cost-effective solution for actuators in motion control applications. In this article, the direct torque control with space vector modulation is analysed as a possible candidate for synchronous reluctance motor motion control applications. Its torque-control performance is investigated as a function of torque-control sample time, and a comparison of the torque ripples is made with other torque-control algorithms by an FFT analysis.

Opis:
Synchronous reluctance motor drives are one of the most attractive alternatives of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives and induction motor drives in the field of conventional industrial and household applications. This tendency is expected to be continued in the case of motion control applications as well. This article investigates two torque-control algorithms that are possible candidates for motion control synchronous reluctance motor applications. The examined torque-control algorithms are direct torque control (DTC) and hysteresis current vector control (HCVC).

Opis:
Today, a clear trend in electrification process has emerged in all areas to cope with carbon emissions. For this purpose, the widespread use of electric cars and wind energy conversion systems has increased the attention and importance of electric machines. To overcome limitations in mature control techniques, model predictive control (MPC) strategies have been proposed. Of these strategies, predictive torque control (PTC) has been well accepted in the control of electric machines. However, it suffers from the selection of weighting factors in the cost function. In this paper, the weighting factor associated with the flux error term is optimised by the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) algorithm through torque and flux errors. The NSGA-II algorithm generates a set of optimal solutions called Pareto front solutions, and a possible solution must be selected from among the Pareto front solutions for use in the PTC strategy. Unlike the current literature, three decision-making methods are applied to the Pareto front solutions and the weighting factors selected by each method are tested under different operating conditions in terms of torque ripples, flux ripples, cur-rent harmonics and average switching frequencies. Finally, a decision-making method is recommended.

Opis:
Induction machines have of late become the most popular workhorses in the industry replacing DC machines because of their advantages, such as reduced cost, reliability and the absence of commutators, which make them adapt to unfavourable conditions with lower maintenance requirement. However, higher-order models of AC machines, nonlinearities in model equations, uncertainties in parameters and load disturbances make induction motors difficult to control than that of DC motors. In this paper, a robust control strategy considering the recent advances in technology is proposed employing input-output feedback linearization for the exact decoupling of electromagnetic torque and rotor flux using fractional-order sliding mode controller (SMC) for the outer speed loop. The sliding mode observer is also designed to extract the rotor flux from the DC input voltage of the inverter and stator current measurements. Finally, a comparison between the commonly used proportional integral and derivative (PID) controller and the proposed fractional-order SMCs is made and the conclusion is reached.

Opis:
This paper aims to introduce a novel extended Kalman filter (EKF) based estimator including observability analysis to the literature associated with the high performance speed-sensorless control of induction motors (IMs). The proposed estimator simultaneously performs the estimations of stator stationary axis components of stator currents and rotor fluxes, rotor mechanical speed, load torque including the viscous friction term, and reciprocal of total inertia by using measured stator phase currents and voltages. The inertia estimation is done since it varies with the load coupled to the shaft and affects the performance of speed estimation especially when the rotor speed changes. In this context, the estimations of all mechanical state and parameters besides flux estimation required for high performance control methods are performed together. The performance of the proposed estimator is tested by simulation and real-time experiments under challenging variations in load torque and velocity references; and in both transient and steady states, the quite satisfactory estimation performance is achieved.

Opis:
Classical voltage space vector modulation techniques cannot be efficiently applied in four-switch three-phase voltage inverter-fed electrical drives due to a voltage offset in DC-link capacitors. The capacitor voltages imbalance is a result of a bidirectional current which flows in a phase of an electric motor that is connected to a DC-link capacitor midpoint. To overcome this problem which leads to an incorrect inverter voltage modulation or even can affect the DC-link capacitors, predictive control algorithms considering the voltage offset in DC-link capacitors have been developed. Despite the predictive methods are highly effective, they require to adjust the cost function weighting factors which is normally an inexplicit task. In this paper, an on-line tuning method of the weighting factor related to the capacitor voltages imbalance incorporated in the cost function of the predictive algorithm has been proposed. According to the proposed approach, the weighting factor is self-adjusted so that the DC-link capacitor voltages are stabilized as well as a high quality of the drive control is remained simultaneously, regardless of its operating point. The proposed strategy has been validated by using simulation model of the induction motor drive system.
