Last year was marked by a dominance of well-known authors (such as Janusz Anderman, Sylwia Chutnik, Michał Witkowski, Łukasz Orbitowski, Andrzej Sosnowski, Krzysztof Varga, Zenon Fajfer, Marta Podgórnik, Tadeusz Pióro, Marcin Świetlicki) and proved that books that consider identity problems can gain positive readers’ response.

    Opis:
    The author of the article suggests reading Dorota Masłowska’s debut novel Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną from the perspective of the feminist literary critics. She uses Nancy K. Miller’s concept of arachnology. The author concentrates on parts of the novel that have been overlooked so far in reviews and interpretations. She examines a character in the book, a young girl, who is the author’s alter ego. The auctorial subject is revealed on different levels in the text: as a character in the novel, the author of the text that is being read and in a monologue of the narrator, Silny, whose narration is influenced by elements beyond his own consciousness and language. The experience of growing mature and writing is developed in the plot, through the consciousness of the main character and only revealed gradually. It is at the end of the novel that the author finally gives up the mask of the character and speaks for herself.

    Opis:
    Adaptation of different literary texts is one of the important practices in Polish contempo-rary theatre after 1989. Adaptations are being undertaken by the creators of the authorial theatres, directors of the repertory theatres and young artists who began their professional career in the theatre in the late nineties and after a year 2000. The article discusses three different types of adaptory practices. Krystian Lupa's adaptations are a kind of creative dialogue with literature that becomes a base for individual and evolving esthetics of his own theatre. Krzysztof Warlikowski struggles with the tradition and exceeds it. Directors repre-senting critical theatre use classical dramatical and epic texts to build a dialectical discourse with Polish “ready¬ made world”.

    The article presents the most important and the most interesting prose and poetry works published in 2011. Most of them were written by well known authors. Those that particular-ly deserve mentioning are Saturn. Czarne obrazy z życia mężczyzn Goya by Jacek Dehnel, Bornholm, Bornholm by Hubert Klimko-Dobrzaniecki, Książka by Mikołaj Łoziński, Ziarno prawdy by Zygmunt Miłoszewski, Włoskie szpilki by Magdalena Tulli and Drwal by Michał Witkowski. In poetry, the works by Konrad Góra (Pokój widzeń), Szczepan Kopyt (Buch), Marta Podgórnik (Rezydencja surykatek) and Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki (Imię i znamię) were enthusiastically received by readers. Apparently, year 2011 confirmed quite stabile preferences of the readers, which resulted in appreciation above all such publications that grounded in ‘middle literature’ tended to hy-brid form, transgression of literary genres, artistic expressiveness. Works that received the warmest readers’ response were those dedicated to the identity problems or facing the de-mons of the past.

    The article deals with Polish cinema after the year 1989. Starting with the characteristics of Polish cinema before the period of transformations, the author continues with an analysis of the new cinema to distinguish four currents: “works of mourning” encompassing films which were meant as settling accounts or reconciliation with World War II and communism; “cinema of testimony” with special interest in films by Marcel Łoziński, but also mentioning others such as Kazimierz Karabasz and Jacek Blawut; “filmmakers young and old” based on three strategies of authorship, namely those of a fabulator (e.g. Krzysztof Kieślowski), a myth¬ biographer (e.g. Andrzej Kondratiuk, Marek Koterski and Marcin Koszałka), and an artist (e.g. Andrzej Barański, Dorota Kędzierzawska and Lech J. Majewski); and “popular cinema” with its four basic genres: action cinema, comedy, literary adaptation and romantic comedy.
