- The aim of this paper is to present a theory of naive linguistics, which is a novelty in Polish linguistics. We make a critical review of the relevant literature by confronting the NL with theories of language awareness, attitudes towards language, and the theory of social representations. Our examples indicate that the expert thinking of language has not been popularised (the language policy problem) and the issues of naive thinking have not been described in detail (the methodological problem) to this date. This gap could be fi lled by this research, which aims, on the one hand, to thoroughly describe how naive linguistics comes into existence and functions and, on the one hand, to present such a picture of the actual social situation as would permit more effective political and linguistic activities. The value of the conducted research, apart from the strictly scientific, theoretical, dimension, is also utilitarian.
