Opis:
The object of this paper is an attempt to describe the complex identity of the Yiddish language itself and its users. Poland and the Polish language have played a signifi cant role in both these aspects. Part one is a sociolinguistic overview of the history of crystallisation of Yiddish in the historical territory of Poland as the autonomous language of the national culture of Central and Eastern European Jews. Its fate after the Holocaust of European Jews is also described here. Part two is dedicated to problems with the genetic classifi cation of Yiddish due to the language-forming processes accompanying its development. Yiddish is classifi ed among mixed languages, since it came into existence as a result of Hebrew– Slavic–Germanic language contacts. Therefore, this part pays special attention to the explanation of the mixed nature of this language system and the role of Polish as an important contact language infl uencing the fi nal shape of the contemporary Yiddish language.

The aim of this paper is to present Tomasz Szumski’s prescriptive views. Dokładna nauka języka i stylu polskiego (Learning the Polish language and style thoroughly) is not a highly popular work, yet one deserving attention as it combines a grammatical description of the Polish language with the rules governing its use, including a lecture on communication behaviours. It is a systematic and a clearly prescriptive lecture of good Polish, where the author distinguishes three levels of command of the language. It includes not only a description of grammatical rules but also guidance regarding proper pronunciation, text construction and delivery. The rules formulated by T. Szumski are expressly oriented towards addressees with the aim to make them feel comfortable; they are also conditions of an effective utterance/statement. The study is embedded in the European grammatical and rhetorical tradition. Historical, national, literary, and aesthetic criteria, although unnamed directly, are clear in the author’s thinking about the language.

This paper discusses the situation of trilingualism of students at Lviv schools with Polish as the language of instruction. Earlier linguistic studies paid no attention to the individuals of non-Polish descent who attended such schools. Part one of this paper presents the profile of the examined group, which comprised, apart from persons of Polish descent, individuals of non-Polish descent, for whom Polish is a foreign language. The next part discusses the results of sociolinguistic surveys concerning the motivation for learning Polish and the level of command of the languages used by the respondents. It also presents preferences as regards the use of media and non-verbal communication. The final part describes the interviewees’ attitude to the languages as well as to Poland and Ukraine. The studies were conducted using earlier research concepts regarding Polish–foreign language bilingualism by Ewa Lipińska, Władysław Miodunka, Marzena Błasiak, and Pavel Levchuk. In the description of the private-sphere language choice, William Mackey’s method was applied.

The aim of this paper is to briefl y present the situation of the Lemko language from the historical perspective covering one hundred years of its development. The creation of Lemkos’ linguistic awareness and identity before their displacements (1945–1947) has been clearly refl ected in literature. It provides the foundation for reconstructing the main emancipatory identity line developed based on “our language”, equivalent to the local speech, followed by the Lemko intelligentsia, while confronting the social and political considerations of their native area. A drastic effect of the considerations was displacements, destruction of culture, and lack of conditions for fostering language. The recovery of language rights after 1989 has initiated a range of internal revitalisation processes and strategies supported also institutionally. They are, however, not able to stop the mass destructive processes resulting in the Lemko language being currently among the endangered ones.

This paper discusses the relation between language policy and language culture – two fundamental notions in prescriptive linguistics. Both terms and their contents can be understood differently (as manifest in their definitions). It turns out that particularly the concept behind language policy has various meanings and the contents it encompasses can be classified into 6 groups. Depending on the adopted definitions, both analysed notions can even be – in extreme cases – equated or understood as separate. Most commonly, language policy, defined as a set of various planned and coordinated actions related to the language system and/or language awareness of users, is situated as a part of language culture – within its functional meaning.

The Polish-language profile of „Poradnik Językowy” („The Linguistic Guide”) determines the fact that the studies regarding the Ukrainian language constitute a relatively small portion of the publications (66 in total). However, they have been published nearly since the initial annals and their subject matters include (in the quantitative order): 1) the presence of the Polish language in Ukraine, 2) the presence of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine, 3) the issues of the Slavic languages in general, 4) comparative (including contrastive) studies, 5) Ukrainisms present in the Polish language. The publications depict the status of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine and in contacts with the Polish language, interests of (Polish and Ukrainian) linguists in these issues, and trends in the language policies of both states.

Interpretacja mitu o wieży Babel pozwala wychwycić ogólny mechanizm kształtowania się języków: zdarzenie / dzieje / historia > zmiany kulturowe > zmiany językowe, czyli zjawisko pozajęzykowe > zmiany zewnętrznojęzykowe > zmiany wewnętrznojęzykowe. Najczęstsze zajwiska pozajęzykowe to ruchy migracyjne, wydarzenia polityczne, wydarzenia nadnaturalne i uwarunkowane cywilizacyjnie. Czynniki zewnętrznojęzykowe układają się w cztery opozycyjne procesy występujące w dwóch płaszczyznach : demokratyzacja <--> elitaryzacja; etnicyzacja <--> globalizacja. W tej sferze czynników kształtują się także wzory mowy, których repertuar sprowadza się do pięciu typów opozycji: konserwatyzm – modernizm, kosmopolityzm – nacjonalizm, puryzm – liberalizm, normatywizm – wolicjonalizm, racjonalizm – emocjonalizm. Na oddziaływania czynników pozajęzykowych i zewnętrznojęzykowych nakładają się mechanizmy wewnętrznojęzykowe regulujące proporcje między składnikami systemu językowego: kompletacja, ekonomizacja, unifikacja, repartycja i nobilitacja.
Interpreting the myth of the Tower of Babel enables us to capture the general mechanism of language development: an event / experiences / history > cultural changes > linguistic changes, i.e., an extra-linguistic phenomenon > external language changes > internal language changes. Among the most common extralinguistic phenomena are migrations, political events, supernatural and civilization-driven events. External factors affecting language change form an array of four divergent processes along two separate lines: democratization ↔ eliticization; ethnicization ↔ globalization. These factors also influence the emergence of language patterns, the repertoire of which boils down to five types of oppositions: conservatism – modernism, cosmopolitanism – nationalism, purism – liberalism, normativism – volitionalism, rationalism – emotionalism. The impact of extralinguistic and language-external factors overlaps with the internal linguistic mechanisms that balance the components of a linguistic system: completion, economization, unification, repartition, and nobilitation.

This paper discusses the issue of irrelevance of the aspect of the Polish verb. In specifi c contexts, the grammatical category of aspect, being obligatory in the Polish language, is in fact redundant. The identifi cation of such contexts (and hence review of the most important current observations and convictions in this respect), the attempt at ordering and describing them enabled systematic material research based on a (Polish–German and German–Polish) translation. The fi ndings presented in the paper might be a good starting point for a refl ection on the reasonability of including the described issue in curricula of teaching Polish as a foreign language. Due to its reach and frequency, the phenomenon of alternation of aspectual partners should be more frequently discussed in the literature dedicated to aspect and Polish glottodidactics.

Najnowsze dzieje języka polskiego (1918–2018) przebiegały w czterech fazach (1918–1939, 1939–1945, 1945–1990, po 1990). W sferze zjawisk zewnętrznojęzykowych i tendencji socjolingwistycznych polszczyzna ewoluowała od statusu języka elitarnego do kodu zdemokratyzowanego oraz od dwudzielnego podziału odmian komunikacyjnych (język ogólny : dialekty) do podziału trójdzielnego (język ogólny : dialekty ludowe : kody mieszane). W sferze zjawisk wewnętrznojęzykowych dominowały tendencje do ekonomizacji i do kompletacji środków językowych w całym przebiegu dziejów przy zachowaniu równomiernej dynamiki pozostałych tendencji (unifikacja, repartycja, nobilitacja). Procesy te i szczegółowe zmiany językowe w sposób proporcjonalny objęły wszystkie warstwy strukturalne systemu polszczyzny, co świadczy o efektywności procesów optymalizacyjnych.
The latest history of the Polish language (1918–2018) consists of four phases (1918–1939, 1939–1945, 1945–1990, after 1990). In the area of extra-linguistic phenomena and sociolinguistic trends, the Polish language has evolved from the status of an elite language to a democratised code and from the double division of communication varieties (common language : dialects) to the triple division (common language : folk dialects : mixed codes). In the area of intra-linguistic phenomena, the trends of economisation and completion of linguistic devices dominated throughout the history, while preserving the uniform dynamics of other trends (unification, repartition, nobilitation). These processes and specific language changes have affected all structural layers of the Polish language system in a proportional manner, which proves the effectiveness of optimisation processes.

This paper presents the situation of the Polish language in Kazakhstan. The sketch discusses the history and present situation of and prospects for teaching Polish in this country. The author pays particular attention to the description of the situation of the Polish community in Kazakhstan, where the teaching of the Polish language is concentrated. Moreover, she presents partial results of her study of the motivations for learning Polish among inhabitants of Kazakhstan. The paper is an attempt at presenting all Kazakh centres where the Polish language is taught and outlining the prospect for the development of Polish in this country.

The aim of this paper is to describe the functioning of neologisms based on the decomposed root kato-, which takes its origins from the word katolicyzm (Catholicism), katolik (a Catholic) or katolicki (Catholic), in the contemporary Polish language. For this purpose, the author presents his classifi cation and includes the fi ndings of earlier scholars in this fi eld. Subsequently, the collected vocabulary is described from the perspective of language pragmatics in order to, for instance, present the infl uence of social events and Internet users’ activity on creating new lexis. The conducted analysis demonstrates, among others, a considerable number of terms marked pejoratively, ideologically, and politically. That fact is interpreted from the philosophical point of view proposed in essays written by Józef Tischner. The paper also outlines the possibility to look at the collected lexical resource from the angle of the notion of linguistic worldview. Moreover, it points to a convergence between the results of the conducted analysis and general fi ndings about the development tendencies of the contemporary Polish language.

The first Polish grammatical terms came into existence as early as in the Middle Ages. Due to the role played by Latin in the Polish culture and science, the relations between the Polish terminology under forma tion and the already formed Latin terminology are signifi cant. This is noticeable not only in bilingual (Latin–Polish) grammar book by E. Donat but also in the first Polish-language grammar books by W. Szylarski and O. Kopczyński. The latter rendered considerable services to the codifi cation of grammatical terminology. In the 19th century, it was impossible to popularise J. Przybylski’s and A. Morzycki’s innovative terminological propositions. The development of the Polish scientific linguistics gives rise to a revision of the earlier grammatical systematics, which results also in a change in the nomenclature. The distinctness of grammatical lexis is evidenced by the glossaries attached to the grammar books. Some of the terms have entered the vocabulary common to various varieties of Polish over time.

This paper is a part of the research on the language of life coaching. The text describes the influence of the language of business on the way of speaking of a man. In the examined text corpus containing, among others, business cards on websites and blogs of Polish life coaches, press articles, and training offers, a man is presented as capital to invest in to achieve an undefi ned success. A part of the study is the examination of the lexemes inwestycja (investment) and inwestować (to invest) and their collocations. The whole discussion is consistent with a broader reflection on the expansion of the language of business, the language of economics, and the language of neoliberalism over the domains of life which had not been associated with the world of entrepreneurship before.

The entire period 1944-2018 was divided chronologically into two parts: the period 1944-1989, which was the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), when Poland was part of the Socialist Bloc, led by the USSR, and the period 1989-2018, when the Polish authorities and society built a free and independent Republic of Poland in unison. In the former period, special attention is given to the period 1978-1990, when Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s election as Pope John Paul II first and the establishment and activity of the Solidarity movement next made Poland a country well-known and admired all over the world, which largely influenced the transformation of the awareness of the Polish community in many countries. All this constitutes a background for the presentation of the history of education of the Polish community abroad, foundation of schools of the Polish language and culture at numerous Polish institutions of higher education, with the University of Warsaw in the lead and fi nally, the process of developing Polish Studies abroad as well as the process of integrating Polish and foreign specialists in Polish studies in the period 1997-2018.

On the occasion of Poland’s regaining its independence in 1918, several papers have been written to depict the development and transformations of the Polish language over the period 1918–2018. However, none of the studies covered popularising Polish by emigrant communities in various countries around the world, preserving it and passing it down to new generations in a bilingual environment, and its teaching not only in ethnic schools but also in higher education institutions. This paper addresses the abovementioned issues by presenting relations between the Polish state and emigration communities in the period 1918–1939 first. A characteristic typical of this period was the fact that governmental authorities treated emigrants and their descendants as Poles around the world who may pursue the objectives of the Polish foreign policy. With this in mind, the World Union of Poles (Światpol) was established in 1934, which was opposed by representatives of the Polish American community. A further part of the paper presents the organisation of summer school of the Polish language and culture at the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków beginning from 1931, teaching of the Polish language in Polish schools abroad and aid provided to them by Poland, and finally, courses of Polish and programmes in Polish Studies offered at foreign universities.
