Opis:
This article presents a two-denominational village community in central Poland (Roman Catholics and followers of the Old Catholic Mariavite Church). The author strives to combine an anthropological interpretation of her field studies with a broader historical and social perspective. Mariavitism emerged fromRoman Catholicism a hundred years ago. Today it no longer provokes the spontaneous social sanctions of the followers of the mother Church. The structural dichotomy, indistinguishable in everyday life, has been channelled in the local political division. Celebrations of holidays in the village public space are a site of fractional rivalry between political actors and they also serve as a symbolic means of expression for different social forces. Because of the dense local relations and symbols and their interpretations, the local community is easily manipulated politically and this is weakening their civic activity.

Based upon survey research and drawing upon literature by historians and social scientists, this article discusses what Auschwitz means to Poles and how perceptions of it have changed since the 1990s. The article shows that Auschwitz means to nearly all Poles genocide, the Polish martyrdom, and the Jewish Holocaust at the same time. It also identifies and analyzes the processes thereby the number of Poles perceiving Auschwitz as primarily Jewish has increased from minimal to a relative majority and the number of those perceiving Auschwitz as primarily Polish, once being a relative majority, has decreased, albeit still remains fairly high. The article argues that the perception of Auschwitz in Poland has considerably become “Judaized,” “de-Polonized,” “de-nationalized,” and “de-Catholized.” It also draws conclusions from the case study of the changing perceptions of Auschwitz for social memory studies.

Empirical research on support for democracy and democratic values in Eastern Europe has proliferated in the last decade and a half. Based on survey data from a recent, nationally representative survey of Polish public opinion, I contribute to this growing literature by exploring the dynamics of Poles’ support for the rights of political dissenters. Using multivariate regression analysis, I model the relationships between a variety of socio-political assessments and support for political dissenters’ rights. I find that Poles’ support for the rights of political dissenters is far from uniform and varies as a function of authoritarianism, approval of the government in power, anomie, education, and (marginally) gender. I conclude with a discussion of my findings’ implications for democratic consolidation in Poland.

Often in themigration literature transnational relations ofmigrants and their institutions with the sending country are described as important factor strengthening or improving the situation of the migrants in the receiving country. The aim of the paper is to empirically prove that in some of the cases the set of multiple conditions affecting immigrant organizations may have the opposite effect. The example of Polish organizations in Germany shows that transnationalization may have as a consequence the limiting, and the degradation of immigrant organizations standing. The four analyzed factors determining the situation of Polish immigrant associational in Germany: the characteristics of immigrant group, the policy of the receiving country towards immigration and IOs, the diaspora policy of the sending country, as well as the bilateral relations between the sending and receiving country together constitute a combination that has a strong negative effect on the functioning of Polish organizations. This all produces an impression of falling into the “trap of transnationalism.”

Much like Western societies with developed economies, Polish society has become increasingly consumer-oriented, as is manifested by Poles’ desire for instant pleasure and the search for the meaning and sense of life through the purchase and consumption of goods and services available on the market. Such an approach could be positively or negatively connected with a healthy lifestyle. The aim of our study was to explore the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and the pro-consumer orientation in Poland. The study involved a survey conducted in 2016 on a nationwide sample of 1,000 people. The findings suggest that a pro-consumer orientation is positively correlated with those elements of a healthy lifestyle that are trendy and symbolize membership in certain social groups. On the other hand, this orientation is inversely correlated with behaviors that require constant self-control and do not bring immediate benefits.

Opis:
On the basis of a nationwide survey conducted in 2020, this article strives to answer questions concerning the legal consciousness of contemporary Poles. Above all, it aims to establish whether the law is of value in Polish society—used as a tool for the resolution of conflicts, protection of rights, and the management of social relationships. The analysis is anchored in the Polish tradition of research on legal consciousness, but goes beyond that tradition to emphasize a sense of agency and competency as key components of legal consciousness. Moreover, the analysis links legal consciousness to other areas of life controlled by legal regulations. Supported by such theoretical considerations, this article presents an empirical model of legal consciousness in order to ponder a question about the empirical roots of the rule of law and legal alienation in the consciousness of Poles today.

The aim of the text is to capture and identify the differences between volunteers and non-volunteers in the scope of the widely understood image of volunteering and the beliefs surrounding it. The data was gathered in three Polish cities and shows that there is a great disparity between young volunteers and non-volunteers. This disparity can be of substantial importance to the future of volunteering in Poland and it conclusively proves that young people are very pragmatic. Volunteers see the sense in sports volunteering via the instrumental benefits that transcend the experience, although they do not question the autotelicy of sports volunteering, especially when it comes to its value as an emotional experience.

The first generation of Poles whose political horizons have been limited by their country’s membership in the EU by a popular assumption should also be the most pro-European section of the society. However, empirical evidence demonstrates that despite the broad support for Poland’s membership that we see on the surface, young people’s perceptions of the EU are characterised by undercurrent euroscepticism. This undercurrent euroscepticism is less about a pragmatic assessment of benefits and losses, and more about concerns about emotive-symbolic issues, such as authority, self-determination, sovereignty, national identity and values. While the benefits of the EU membership are often taken for granted, the concerns about sovereignty understood in an old-fashioned way are brought to the fore in young people’s perceptions of the EU. The article focuses on the role of the domestic political context and how the real and perceived generation gap plays into it. The paper calls for comprehensive education about European integration and critical thinking and media consumption literacy in order to diminish the susceptibility of young people to anti-European cues by political entrepreneurs.

This paper reviews the genesis of ethnically motivated control in the nineteenth-century Russian Empire. We determined that people of Polish descent were the main target of the earliest examples of the practice of such types of control. “Watching the Poles” differed from classic police surveillance and was closer to more modern intelligence practices: an entire category of population, rather than specific individuals, were being controlled. The practice was not passive either; it involved the Imperial government’s active intrusion into the private lives of people of Polish descent. This allows us to view the Empire’s attitude toward Poles as an early example of population policy and control over the Poles as one of the tools of executing this policy in practice.

Opis:
The article examines the negative approach of Poles towards political parties and partisanship in the recent years, presenting this phenomenon as a part of wider anti-party syndrome, characterizing Polish democracy after 1989. Adapting the approach of Torcal, Gunther and Montero (2002), the author constructs a scale of the anti-partyism, based on the statements typical for anti-party discourse, assessed by respondents in three surveys conducted in 1995, 2001 and 2011. Subsequently, some explanations of anti-party attitudes are tested. The analyses demonstrate that anti-partyism in Poland is relatively durable and embraces both cultural and reactive components. Anti-party attitudes are more visible among citizens socialized during the communist period. However, the consolidation of democracy generated its “own” anti-partyism: the youngest citizens were gradually more disinclined to political parties in the period analyzed (1995–2011).

The aim of the article is to identify the factors that contribute to the differentiation of attitudes towards the coronavirus pandemic in three areas: 1) course of the pandemic; 2) evaluation of the actions of various actors in the fight against the pandemic; and 3) assessment of the restrictions introduced during the pandemic. The analysis is based on a survey conducted among the Polish population. A hierarchical cluster analysis procedure was conducted on the 15 variables using Ward’s method. We distinguished five groups: 1) dissenters, 2) government’s critics, 3) conformists, 4) critical conformists and 5) bystanders. Based on the cluster analysis we argue that: various models of social compliance with restrictions and of crisis management can be identified during pandemic, pandemic followed different trajectories for different groups and was differently experienced, the credibility of the statistics is an important element in shaping attitudes towards the pandemic.

In this article, the social representation of health shared by Poles is presented in the context of its function in society. The theory of social representations and its use in health research is introduced. The results of research are used to consider how perceptions of health shape a social order in which medicine is still a large institution of social control. The above-mentioned research included 30 in-depth interviews and a nationwide survey of a representative sample. As a result, three dimensions of the social representation of health were identified: the ‘ability to function independently’, which involves mental well-being and the ability to fill social roles; ‘absence of disease’-lack of ailments, a feeling of zest and a lack of diagnosed illness; and the ‘biological reserves of the organism’-the resources for resisting disease. Analysis of the data has led to the conclusion that the first dimension serves to preserve identity and integration of the social group, the second contributes to maintaining medical social control, while the third motivates individuals to take steps to protect or improve their health. In addition, the last two dimensions serve the interests of groups profiting from medicalization.

Nieszawa, which is situated in northern Poland, is unique in the history of Polish-German relations. In 1945 local Polish militiamen murdered a group of German civilians there. In 2000, after decades of public silence about this crime, the leaders of the local community decided to commemorate the victims. In this article, the mutual influence of three kinds of (non-)memory of the crime-national official, local official, and vernacular- are analyzed. In conclusion, some of the factors are identified that make members of a group that mistreated “Others” accept the truth about the event and acknowledge the need to discuss it publicly.
