Opis:
The present paper is a literature survey focused on a specific kind of corrosion, i.e. pitting corrosion and its influence on fatigue of ship and offshore steels. Mechanisms of a shortand long-term pitting corrosion in marine environment have been described including pit nucleation and growth phases. Some models of pit growth versus time of exposure have been presented. Some factors which influence the pit growth rate have been discussed briefly.

Opis:
In the paper has been discussed influence of stresses on general corrosion rate and corrosion pit nucleation rate and growth , whose presence has been questioned by some authors but accepted by most of them. Influence of roughness of pit walls on fatigue life of a plate suffering pit corrosion and presence of the so called „ non-damaging” pits which never lead to initiation of fatigue crack, has been presented. Possibility of prediction of pit-to-crack transition moment by two different ways, i.e. considering a pit a stress concentrator or an equivalent crack, has been analyzed. Also, influence of statistical distribution of depth of corrosion pits as well as anticorrosion protection on fatigue and corrosion fatigue has been described.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the influence of pitting corrosion on mechanical properties of mild and low alloy steels and strength of steel structures under static and quasi-static loads. Pitting corrosion is a very important phenomenon that influence local strength of ship hull members. The present paper is based mainly on Japanese publications. Analyzing the standard tensile diagrams one can see that that pitting corrosion reduces the load corresponding to yield stress (YS) and, even more markedly, tensile strength UTS, reduces almost to zero plastic flow strains at YS load level and dramatically reduces the total elongation to fracture. Nominal UTS load for uniformly corroded specimens is higher than that for pitted specimens at the same average thickness loss. The strength related to the true fracture surface area (i.e. reduced by pits, taking into account real path of the crack through the pits) is almost independent of the thickness loss and is almost the same as for uniform thickness loss. For wide specimens the tensile strength depends mainly on the local deformation ability, and the maximum loading ability for large members, predicted on the base of the total true fracture surface area, can be overestimated. Concept of equivalent thickness loss for plates under bending and compression and for more complex structural models as well as relation between the average and the equivalent thickness losses has been presented. Approach based on degree of pitting (ratio of pitted area to total plate surface area) has been shown as a real and more convenient than the approach based on the thickness loss.

Opis:
This work deals with the reliability assessment of a tanker ship hull structure subjected to a vertical bending moment and corrosion degradation. The progressive collapse and ultimate load carrying capacity are estimated based on experimentally tested scaled box-shaped-specimens. The translation of the strength estimate of the scaled specimen to the real tanker ship hull structure is performed based on the dimensional theory developing a step-wise linear stressstrain relationship. The load-carrying capacity is considered as a stochastic variable, and the uncertainties resulted from the scaled-specimen to the real-structure strength translation, and the subjected load of the real ship are also accounted for. A sensitivity analysis concerning the stochastic variables, included in the ultimate limit state function is performed. The partial safety factors, in the case of a scaled specimen and real structure, are also identified, and conclusions are derived.

Opis:
Fatigue is one of the main failure modes in marine structures, and it is caused by the strong cyclic characteristics of the loads they support. This failure mode is amplified in areas of high stress concentration, such as at the intersection of primary and secondary elements. In this paper, a two-phase study is proposed that compares numerical and experimental results using a digital image correlation technique. The described procedure establishes selection, design, and scantling criteria and provides recommendations for the design of the transverse structure using specimens with different geometries. These geometries correspond to different designs for the transverse primary structure that use a longitudinal secondary stiffener with variable thickness and longitudinal spacing to transverse in a dynamic and quasi-static regime. The stress state for this regime is calculated based on the biaxiality indication concept, which uses the fatigue phenomenon (safety factor and sensitivity curves) and fracture mechanics (parameters of the Paris crack propagation law, correlation value, and law of variation of the stress intensity factor).

In this paper a short historical outline of laser technique development and its application to welding sandwich panels, is presented. Laser-welded sandwich panels of different geometry, today introduced in industrial scale, were described. Prefabrication process of folded ship constructions, in particular, of panel-to-panel connections and hybrid (sandwich panel – conventional construction) structures, was discussed. Attention was paid to various aspects of prefabrication, assembly and use of panel constructions.

dynamic stresses in ship hull structures
Opis:
The paper presents a discussion on the strength criteria and load cases required in the rules of classification societies for direct FEM strength analysis of ship hull structures, which show some differences to each other. The conclusion of it is that detail studies on stress values in ship structures are necessary to improve the requirements. With this end in view an effective method for long-term prediction of stresses in ship hull structure princiŹpal members is proposed. The method is based on the concept of influence coefficients and spectral analysis of wave loads. A FEM model of the principal member system in the form of 3D frame is applied to calculate values of the influence coefficients. Next, the concept is used of correlaŹtion factors for combining characteristic long-term stress values caused by global and local loads, with combined stresses due to general bending of the ship, zone bending of the principal members and local bending of longitudinals. As an example, results of stress prediction and correlation factors calculated in some points of hull structure of a panamax bulk carrier are presented and discussed.

Opis:
This paper presents a concept of hull structure of novel environment-friendly inland navigation and coastal ships for Polish east-west waterways. In compliance with its assumptions the inland navigation passenger ship is designed in the form of two mutually connected segments : a propulsion segment which contains gastronomy and entertainment infrastructure and crew accommodations and an articulated hotel segment. In this paper attention is focused on solutions of the hotel segment of an innovative structure mainly consisted of steel polyurethane-filled sandwich panels. Similar structural solution is intended for the propulsion segment.

A design of the hotel barge of 52 m overall length and 9 m breadth , intended for inland waterway shipping on the route from Berlin to Kaliningrad, is presented. Hull of the barge is characterized by a unique structure consisted of densely stiffened aluminium panels of 4.5 mm plate thickness and 70 mm depth of stiffeners, supported by transverse walls or girders. The stiffeners of the panels are longitudinally directed. Also, are described problems associated with assurance of adequate strength and stiffness of such structure, resulting from a limited maximum depth of the barge.
