Opis:
The aim of the paper is to represent step by step progressive collapse analysis for maximum load carrying capacity estimation of a hull girder by using variant of Smith Method, named HULT by authors, with different element separation including single plates, stiffeners, hard corners and stiffened panels. The structural elements that form the ships and offshore structures are exposed to large vertical bending moments and especially compression or tension forces in the longitudinal axis in case of hogging and sagging under bad sea conditions. In recent years, it becomes very important and valuable to practically, fast and nearly correct estimation of the maximum vertical bending moment just before breaks in two (collapse) under the worst conditions. The optimum (accuracy, time, practicality) estimation of these values depend on how accurate the stress-strain relation of the structural elements are established. In this first part of study, the ultimate strength behaviour of the stiffened panels in decks, bottoms and sides is estimated by developed semi-analytical method with updated orthotropic panel calculation approach under uniaxial (only longitudinal axis) compression loads. The second part of calculation is focused on the progressive collapse analysis of hull girders under longitudinal uniaxial compression with Smith Method but with different element discretization in contrast to the conventional beam-column elements. Also some benchmark studies of such methods on ultimate limit state assessment of stiffened panels and nine benchmark hull girders of ships are conducted, using some candidate methods such as IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR), FEA with Ansys v13 and HULT prepared by authors. The results from the tests, FEM analysis and different computational approaches are compared to determine performance of the method.

Opis:
In this study numerical and analytical approaches were investigated in terms of accuracy of their results, practicality of solution and ability to reproduce the main features of the parametric roll phenomenon such as loss of stability and bifurcations in parametric roll motion analysis of ships. In general, single-degree-of-freedom analytical approach is based on reducing number of degrees of freedom from 3 to 1 by using the quasi-static Froude-Krylov assumption, incorporating heave and pitch effects by means of a time varying restoring moment. On the other hand, numerical approaches to motion of six and four degrees of freedom are based on three dimensional diffraction/radiation and potential flow theories. In summary, this paper reveals that analytical approaches are sufficiently adequate to obtain accurate practical results for this relatively complex phenomenon.

Over the last decades a really tough competitive environment has been observed in shipbuilding sector. Under these circumstances shipyards desire to reduce product cycle time in order to manufacture the product as soon as possible. For this reason it is required to make some alterations in shipyard production system in order to reduce cycle time. In this study a panel fabrication line used in a shipyard, has been considered. The workstations of the panel line have been modeled by using ARENA simulation software and the effects of matrix module assembly on panel line throughput, have been determined.

Opis:
Stiffened plates are the main structural building block in ship and offshore hulls and their structural response subject to loads is a topic of significant practical interest in ship and offshore structural design. To investigate the structural capacity for design and evaluation purposes, it is becoming an efficient and reliable practice to carry out non-linear finite element (FE) analysis. The present study is to assess the buckling strength of a stiffened deck panel on an FPSO vessel using the nonlinear finite element code ADVANCE ABAQUS, where imperfection sensitivity work is also accounted for. The cases studied correspond to in-plane bi-axial compression in the two orthogonal directions. The findings are compared with the DNVGL PULS (Panel Ultimate Limit State) buckling code for the stiffened panels. It is found that the strength values from the ADVANCE ABAQUS and DNVGL PULS code are very close. The results and insights developed from the present work are discussed in detail.

Opis:
In this work, buckling strength assessment of a deck of a double hull oil tanker is carried out using the non-linear finite element code ADVANCE ABAQUS. The comparisons are performed with the Det Norske Veritas (DNV-GL) PULS (Panel Ultimate Limit State) buckling code for the stiffened panels, DNV-GL Classification Notes (CN) No.30.1 and the DNV-GL Ship Rules. The case studied corresponds to axial compression. Two levels of imperfection tolerances are analyzed, in accordance with the specifications in the DNV-GL Instruction to Surveyors (IS) and the DNV-GL Classification Notes No. 30.1. Both “as built” and DNV–GL Rule “net” dimensions are analyzed. The strength values from ADVANCE ABAQUS and PULS are very close. DNV-GL CN 30.1 is in conservative side, but the strength differences between the “as built” and “net” dimension cases are consistent with the finite element analysis results. This paper gives a brief description of the background for the stiffened panel models used in PULS, and comparison against non-linear FE analysis, and DNV-GL Classification Society Rules. The finite element code ADVANCE ABAQUS is employed in a non-linear buckling analysis of a stiffened deck panel on a double skin tanker that is subjected to a Condition Assessment Program (CAP) hull survey. The aim of the analyses has been to validate and compare the buckling capacity estimates obtained from PULS, DNV-GL Classification Notes No.30.1 (CN 30.1) and the DNV-GL Ship Rules.

Opis:
This paper presents assessment of technological usefulness of panel production line in prefabrication process of large ship hull sections, in which special attention is paid to producibility of welding operations. Basing on the assessment these authors worked out hierarchy of analyzed sequences of welding technological processes as well as production line stands used for the processes. The assessment was performed on the basis of analysis of a concept of panel production line based on real production lines functioning in shipbuilding industry, as well as technical documentation of typical hull sections of a multi-purpose ferry. The presented analysis took into account impact of technological - constructional parameters onto producibility of welding process of prefabricated sections. Among these parameters the following were numbered: mass of the sections and number of their elements, total length of welds, labour consumption, material consumption as well as linear heat input in welding operations. On the basis of the achieved results, places which worsen effectiveness of production line operation were identified, as a result it was possible to formulate proposals for modernization of flow prefabrication line for hull sections.

Opis:
Thin and thick plates, plates with holes, stiffened panels and stiffened panels with holes are primary structural members in almost all fields of engineering: civil, mechanical, aerospace, naval, ocean etc. In this paper, a simple and efficient procedure for the free vibration analysis of such elements is presented. It is based on the assumed mode method and can handle different plate thickness, various shapes and sizes of holes, different framing sizes and types as well as different combinations of boundary conditions. Natural frequencies and modes are determined by solving an eigenvalue problem of a multi-degree-of-freedom system matrix equation derived by using Lagrange’s equations. Mindlin theory is applied for a plate and Timoshenko beam theory for stiffeners. The applicability of the method in the design procedure is illustrated with several numerical examples obtained by the in-house developed code VAPS. Very good agreement with standard commercial finite element software is achieved.

Opis:
Like other means of transport, merchant ships face the problem of increasing requirements concerning the environment protection, which, among other issues, implies the reduction of fuel consumption by the ship. Here, the conventional approach which consists in making use of higher strength steels to decrease the mass of the ship hull can be complemented by the use of new steel structures of sandwich panel type. However, the lack of knowledge and experience concerning, among other issues, fatigue strength assessment of thin-walled sandwich structures makes their use limited. Untypical welds imply the need for individual approach to the fatigue analysis. The article presents the effect of numerical FEM modelling with the aid of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) elements on the results of strain and stress distributions in the areas of toe and root notches of the analysed laser weld. The presented results of computer simulation reveal that modelling of strain and stress states in 2D (instead of full 3D) affects only the results in close vicinity of the notch, and the observed differences rapidly disappear at a distance of 0.05 mm from the bottom of the notch. The obtained results confirm the possibility of use of numerically effective 2D strain and stress state models for analysing the fatigue strength of laser weld according to local approach.
