Opis:
This article presents the analysis of a damping fluid deficiency in a torsional vibration viscous damper. The problem is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Experimental results are presented, showing what happens to the damper in a situation where the design of the housing is inadequate and the inertia forces prevent the formation of an oil film. In addition, the article deals with the problem of the proper design of the oil channel and the dimensions required to enable the damper to operate reliably. The results of the article may be useful to the constructors of torsional vibration viscous dampers for marine engines.

Opis:
The paper presents identification of main excitation forces ofvibrations of ship hull and its superstructure, as well as investigation of influence of the analyzed excitation on ship vibration level. The following excitation forces were analyzed: dynamic pressure on the transom deck, propeller-generated hydrodynamic forces, as well as internal and external engine-generated forces. Rigidity and attenuation characteristics of lubricating oil film were taken into account in the analysis of the excitations transmitted by the propulsion system bearings (stern tube bearing, intermediate bearing, engine s main and thrust bearings). The dynamic characteristics of ship's power transmission system were also taken into account. Results of the analyzes were verified by comparing results of the computations and measurements.

Opis:
Two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines are widely used in large ships due to their good performance and fuel economy. However, there have been few studies of the effects of lubricating oils on the vibration of two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines. In this work, the effects of three different lubricating oils on the vibration characteristics of a low-speed engine are investigated, using the frequency domain, time-frequency domain, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) methods. The results show that non-invasive condition monitoring of the wear to a cylinder liner in a low-speed marine engine can be successfully achieved based on vibration signals. Both the FFT and STFT methods are capable of capturing information about combustion in the cylinder online in real time, and the STFT method also provides the ability to visualise the results with more comprehensive information. From the online condition monitoring of vibration signals, cylinder lubricants with medium viscosity and medium alkali content are found to have the best wear protection properties. This result is consistent with those of an elemental analysis of cylinder lubrication properties and an analysis of the data measured from a piston lifted from the cylinder after 300 h of engine operation.

Opis:
Periodically changeable gas and inertia forces which occur during operation of engine generate transverse, axial and torsional vibrations of crankshafts of multi-cylinder combustion engines. Torsional vibrations are those which endanger crankshafts of multicylinder combustion engines the most. In order to minimize their impact a torsional vibration damper is installed at crankshaft’s free end. Its technical state directly influences lifetime and reliability of engine. In this paper methods of diagnosing, maintenance and regeneration of torsional vibration dampers used in shipbuilding, are discussed. Also, are presented results of multi-year statistical investigations carried out in cooperation with a firm maintaining and regenerating ship engine torsional vibration dampers, which illustrate types of failures occurring in viscous and spring torsional vibration dampers.
